The BL System Won't Let Me Rest!

The fortress halls were quieter now that the war council had dispersed, but the tension clung thick like an unshakable shadow. Rin walked beside Kaelith, still processing what had just happened. Publicly displaying—even a minimal—form of affection to the demon council had been nerve-wracking in ways he hadn’t anticipated.

”Did you see their faces?” Rin muttered, shaking his head. ”I’m pretty sure one of them was ready to breathe fire through their nostrils.”

Kaelith chuckled, a low, rare sound that seemed almost out of place in the gloom. ”They will adjust. They must.”

Rin wasn’t convinced. ”Yeah, after we survive the first five assassinations probably.”

Kaelith’s gaze sharpened. ”You joke, but that is your reality here.”

The system chimed softly in Rin’s mind again—a reminder that survival was key. He swallowed and steeled himself. This world was ruthless, and the stakes were very real.

They stopped before a heavy door guarded by two intimidating demons clad in armor blackened by war. Kaelith nodded once, and the guards parted silently.

Inside was the war chamber’s antechamber, a space lined with ancient banners and scattered maps of battlefields painted in ominous reds and blacks. A flickering fire burned low in a grand hearth, casting long shadows across the room.

Kaelith gestured for Rin to sit at a stone bench nearby while he moved to a large table covered in strategic diagrams.

”We must prepare,” Kaelith said, voice grim. ”The next council session will focus on the upcoming siege.”

Rin glanced at the maps, trying to make sense of the symbols and notations. ”So, all this ’fake couple’ stuff... it’s a distraction, yeah? A way to survive long enough to fight.”

Kaelith nodded, his expression unreadable. ”And to strengthen our position. The council’s trust is fragile. We must solidify it quickly.”

Rin’s fingers drummed nervously on the stone surface. ”That means more performances. More ’public displays.’”

”Unavoidable,” Kaelith agreed. ”But strategic.”

Rin exhaled, feeling the weight of the charade settle heavier. ”How do we avoid it turning into a real mess? I’m not exactly... romantic material.”

Kaelith’s lip twitched, almost a smile. ”Neither am I.”

”That’s comforting,” Rin said dryly.

A sudden knock at the door interrupted them. Kaelith’s eyes flicked toward the sound.

The door creaked open, revealing a lean figure cloaked in dark robes. The visitor’s gaze was sharp, assessing Rin with thinly veiled suspicion.

”General Kaelith,” the visitor said, bowing. ”I am Selara, your envoy to the Eastern factions.”

Kaelith nodded. ”Selara. What news?”

Selara stepped forward, voice low and urgent. ”The Eastern factions are uneasy about this... human influence. They question your judgment.”

Rin felt a cold prick down his spine. ”Because I’m ’human,’” he said bitterly.

Kaelith’s jaw clenched. ”I expected no less.”

Selara fixed her gaze on Rin. ”Your presence complicates alliances. Trust is fragile, and the factions demand assurances.”

Rin fought the urge to glare but instead met her eyes steadily. ”I get it. I’m standing on thin ice here.”

”You must prove your worth,” Kaelith said firmly. ”Not just to me, but to all who doubt.”

Selara’s eyes softened marginally as she looked at Rin. ”There is a test. A challenge designed to demonstrate your loyalty and usefulness.”

Rin’s pulse quickened. ”A test? Like what? Running through fire? Eating something gross?”

”No,” Selara said sharply. ”A trial by combat. You will spar with one of our champions. Win, and you earn respect.”

Rin blinked. ”Wait. I’m here to fake a romance, not fight a demon gladiator.”

Kaelith’s gaze was steady. ”Survival requires strength. Your skills will be tested. We must appear united and formidable.”

Rin felt trapped—pulled between the impossible demands of this brutal world and the baffling rules of the system that bound him to Kaelith.

”Fine,” he said finally, setting his jaw. ”Bring it on. I’ll show them I’m worth more than just a gimmick.”

Selara nodded approvingly. ”Good. The sparring will be tomorrow at dawn.”

After she left, Kaelith turned back to Rin. ”Rest tonight. You will need your strength.”

Rin nodded, exhaustion washing over him. ”Yeah. Rest. Because tomorrow’s plan includes getting punched in the face.”

Kaelith allowed himself a grim smile. ”Exactly.”

As Rin lay on the sparse cot in the dark quarters, his thoughts swirled. He was a fake lover, a pawn in a demon war, about to step into a deadly trial.

But beneath the fear, something else flickered—a stubborn fire. He wasn’t just going to survive. He was going to turn this nightmare into his battlefield.

And maybe, just maybe, rewrite the rules of this twisted romance war.
