50 Chapter 50: The Memory That Wasn’t His 2026-10-25

Rin didn’t sleep.

He tried.

For nearly three hours, he lay beneath the unfamiliar blankets, staring at the ceiling while the events of the previous day continued circling through his mind.

He had been a God. Not in this world. Not human. Not even born here.

A God of Love.

His soul had belonged to another world before somehow being pulled into this one.

His mother had known. Eryon had known. The God had known. And apparently, the System had known more than it had ever told him.

Rin turned onto his side.

”This is ridiculous.”

From the other side of the room came a voice.

”Agreed.”

Rin opened one eye. Sol was sitting beside the window. Again.

”You’ve been there all night.”

”Not all night.”

”How long?”

”Since you started pretending to sleep.”

Rin stared at him.

”How do you know I was pretending?”

”I’m your System.”

”You’re also my little brother.”

”That too.”

Rin sighed. Sol looked different tonight. Usually, he would have made some sarcastic comment.

Usually, he would have appeared with a ridiculous notification. Usually, he would have complained about Rin’s sleeping habits. Instead, he was quiet.

Rin sat up.

”Something’s wrong.”

”Nothing is wrong.”

”Sol.”

”I’m fine.”

”You always say that when something is wrong.”

Sol looked at him.

For a few seconds, neither spoke. Then Rin smiled.

”You know you don’t have to hide things from me.”

Sol’s expression softened.

”I know.”

”Then?”

Sol looked down at his hands.

”The System core is unstable.”

Rin’s smile disappeared.

”How unstable?”

”Three percent.”

”Is that bad?”

”It depends.”

”On what?”

”On how much of me the World is willing to let remain.”

Rin frowned.

”What does that mean?”

Sol didn’t answer immediately. Instead, he looked toward the door.

”Mother knows.”

Rin’s stomach tightened.

”About your core?”

”About everything.”

Rin stood.

”Then let’s ask her.”

Sol sighed.

”I knew you’d say that.”

”Because I’m predictable?”

”No.”

Sol smiled faintly.

”Because you’re incapable of leaving a mystery alone.”

”That’s your fault.”

”My fault?”

”You’re the one who gave me a System.”

”Technically, the World did.”

”You’re still responsible.”

”Fair.”

They left the room together. Seraphine was already awake. She sat beside the fireplace, holding a cup of tea.

She didn’t look surprised when Rin and Sol entered.

”I wondered when you’d come.”

Rin stopped.

”You knew we’d come?”

”I’m your mother.”

”That doesn’t answer the question.”

”It does.”

Sol pulled out a chair.

”Mother.”

Seraphine looked at him.

”You’ve been avoiding my questions.”

”I’ve been trying to protect you.”

”You always say that.”

”Because it’s true.”

Sol’s expression tightened. Rin sat beside him.

”Let’s start with something simple.”

Seraphine raised an eyebrow.

”Simple?”

”Yes.”

Rin pointed at Sol.

”Why is his System core unstable?”

Seraphine looked at Sol. Then she looked away.

”Because the form he was given was never meant to last forever.”

Sol went still. Rin frowned.

”What form?”

”The System.”

Sol stared at her.

”You knew?”

”Yes.”

”You knew that becoming the System was temporary?”

”I knew it wasn’t his true form.”

Sol’s fingers tightened around the edge of the table.

”Then what is?”

Seraphine didn’t answer. Rin looked between them.

”Mom.”

She sighed.

”Your brother was never supposed to become a System.”

Sol gave a bitter laugh.

”That’s becoming my favorite sentence.”

Seraphine looked at him sadly.

”I never wanted it to happen.”

”But it did.”

”Yes.”

”Why?”

”Because of Rin.”

Rin froze. Sol looked at him. Seraphine continued.

”When the God took Rin’s soul, the World understood that something had gone terribly wrong.”

Rin listened carefully.

”It couldn’t directly interfere with the God.”

”Why?”

”Because the God was part of this world’s divine structure.”

”So the World couldn’t fight him.”

”Not directly.”

”Then what did it do?”

Seraphine looked at Sol.

”It used you.”

Sol’s expression changed.

”Used me?”

”Not in the way you’re thinking.”

”Then explain.”

”The World knew that Rin’s soul would continue moving through timelines.”

Rin’s heart tightened.

”And Sol?”

”You were the only one capable of following him.”

Sol slowly understood.

”Because we’re brothers.”

”Yes.”

Rin looked at him.

”So you were connected to my soul.”

”From the beginning.”

Sol’s voice was quiet.

”That’s why I could always find you.”

Rin remembered all the strange moments. The System appearing when he was about to die.

The missions. The warnings. The moments when the System seemed almost emotional. The times Sol had broken rules just to help him.

He looked at his brother.

”You weren’t just assigned to me.”

Sol shook his head.

”No.”

”You were looking for me.”

”Every time.”

Rin’s throat tightened.

”Even when you didn’t know who I was?”

Sol smiled sadly.

”Some part of me always knew.”

Silence filled the room. Rin reached across the table and squeezed his hand. Sol looked at him.

”Don’t.”

”Don’t what?”

”Make this emotional.”

Rin smiled.

”You cried yesterday.”

”I did not.”

”You absolutely did.”

”I was emotionally leaking.”

”That’s called crying.”

”System malfunction.”

Rin laughed. Seraphine watched them quietly. There was sadness in her eyes.

But also relief. She had spent so long keeping secrets that perhaps seeing her sons sitting together again was enough.

Then Rin noticed something. A small silver pendant around her neck. He had never seen it before.

”Mom.”

She touched the pendant.

”What?”

”Where did you get that?”

Her hand immediately closed around it.

”An old friend.”

”Who?”

She hesitated.

”Someone you don’t remember.”

Rin frowned.

”Someone from this world?”

”No.”

That answer caught his attention.

”No?”

Seraphine shook her head.

”He came from somewhere else.”

Sol looked at her.

”Who?”

She remained silent. Rin leaned back.

”Is it connected to Dad?”

Seraphine’s expression changed. The room became completely still. Sol slowly turned toward her. Rin watched carefully.

He hadn’t expected the question to affect her so strongly. Finally, she whispered:

”Yes.”

Sol’s eyes widened.

”You said you weren’t going to talk about him.”

”I didn’t say I wouldn’t talk about him.”

”You said he was gone.”

”He is.”

”Dead?”

Seraphine looked toward the fire.

”I don’t know.”

That answer was worse. Sol stared at her.

”You don’t know?”

”No.”

”Then why did you tell us he’s gone?”

”Because it was safer.”

”For who?”

Seraphine looked at him.

”For all of us.”

Rin remained silent. Something about the way she spoke made him think of the God.

”Did the God know about him?”

”No.”

”Did the God know about us?”

”He knew about you.”

She looked at Rin.

”But not everything.”

Rin touched the pendant.

”Who was he?”

Seraphine’s fingers tightened around the chain.

”I can’t tell you yet.”

Sol stood.

”Why not?”

”Because his name is dangerous.”

Rin frowned.

”A name?”

”Some names aren’t just names.”

She looked at him.

”Especially in the divine realms.”

Rin remembered the fragment.

Ael.

His incomplete divine name. He suddenly understood what she meant.

”Like mine.”

Seraphine nodded.

”Yes.”

Sol sat back down.

”So our father had a dangerous name too.”

Seraphine didn’t respond. That was answer enough.

Later that morning, Rin went outside. The forest was beautiful.

Silver trees stretched toward the sky, their branches covered in glowing leaves.

Kaelith was standing near the edge of the clearing. He had been awake for some time.

Rin approached.

”You heard.”

Kaelith looked at him.

”Some.”

Rin leaned against a tree.

”My mother has a lot of secrets.”

”She has reasons.”

”Everyone has reasons.”

Kaelith glanced at him.

”Are you angry?”

Rin thought about it.

”No.”

Then he smiled.

”Mostly confused.”

Kaelith nodded.

”That’s understandable.”

Rin looked toward the forest.

”Do you think I’m still human?”

Kaelith was silent for a moment. Then:

”Does it matter?”

Rin looked at him.

”I don’t know.”

Kaelith’s expression remained calm.

”You are Rin.”

That was all. No complicated explanation. No divine philosophy. Just his name.

Rin smiled.

”Thanks.”

Kaelith nodded.

From behind them came a voice.

”That’s what I told him.”

Noctis emerged from the trees.

His long silver hair moved gently with the breeze. Rin looked at him.

”You’ve been listening?”

”Unfortunately.”

Kaelith looked at Noctis.

”You could have announced yourself.”

”I wasn’t trying to interrupt.”

”You did.”

Noctis smiled.

”I’ve noticed.”

Rin sighed.

”Please don’t start.”

Neither answered. Rin shook his head.

”Both of you are impossible.”

Noctis looked toward the house.

”Your mother knows more than she’s saying.”

”I know.”

”Do you trust her?”

Rin considered the question.

”Yes.”

”Even knowing she’s hiding things?”

”Yes.”

Noctis looked at him.

”Why?”

Rin smiled faintly.

”Because she was trying to protect me.”

Noctis’s expression softened.

”Fair.”

Rin looked toward the house.

”But I still want answers.”

”Of course.”

”Especially about my father.”

Noctis’s expression changed slightly.

”You want to find him?”

”Eventually.”

”Why?”

”Because he’s part of my history.”

Rin paused.

”And because Sol deserves to know him.”

Noctis nodded. That answer seemed to satisfy him. Inside the house, Sol stood alone.

He stared at the System window floating before him.

[CORE STABILITY: 97%]

He frowned.

”That’s not good.”

A second window appeared.

[WORLD CONNECTION: STABLE]

A third.

[DIVINE AUTHORITY: SEALED]

Sol stared at it. His fingers slowly curled.

”What are you hiding from me?”

The System didn’t answer.

”You’re not the World.”

Silence.

”You’re part of it.”

Still nothing. Sol closed his eyes. He felt something.

A memory. Not Rin’s. His own.

He was standing in darkness. A man was holding him. A man’s voice whispered:

”Protect your brother.”

Sol’s eyes snapped open. He couldn’t see the face. Only a silhouette.

Tall. A hand resting gently on his head. And a silver ring.

The memory vanished. Sol breathed heavily.

”What...”

Another flash.

The same man. Standing beside Seraphine.

She was younger. She was crying. The man touched her face.

”If they find me, don’t tell the boys.”

”They deserve to know you.”

”Not yet.”

”When?”

”When Rin remembers who he was.”

The memory shattered. Sol stumbled backward.

His System windows flickered violently.

[MEMORY ACCESS INTERRUPTED.]

”Who are you?”

The answer didn’t come. Instead, one final image appeared.

A symbol.

Three interlocking circles. Sol stared. He had seen it before.

On the pendant around his mother’s neck. He immediately left the house.

Rin was still outside when Sol appeared.

”Rin.”

Rin turned.

”What happened?”

Sol grabbed his arm.

”We need to talk to Mom.”

”About what?”

”I saw him.”

Rin froze.

”Saw who?”

Sol swallowed.

”Our father.”

Kaelith and Noctis both turned toward him. Rin stared.

”You remembered him?”

”Not completely.”

”What did you see?”

”A memory.”

Sol looked toward the house.

”He was with Mother.”

Rin’s heart began beating faster.

”Do you know his face?”

”No.”

”His name?”

”No.”

”Then how do you know it was him?”

Sol looked down at his hand.

”The symbol.”

”What symbol?”

Sol described it. Seraphine heard them from the doorway. Her face went pale.

She immediately crossed the distance between them.

”Where did you see that?”

Sol looked at her.

”In my memory.”

Seraphine closed her eyes. For the first time since Rin had found her... she looked truly afraid.

”Then the seal is breaking.”

Rin frowned.

”What seal?”

She didn’t answer. Sol stepped forward.

”Mother.”

She looked at him.

”I remember his voice.”

Her lips trembled.

”Sol...”

”He told you not to tell us.”

She said nothing.

”He told you to wait until Rin remembered.”

Still nothing. Rin looked between them.

”Why?”

Seraphine finally whispered:

”Because your father knew that if you remembered too soon...”

She looked directly at Rin.

”...the God would find him.”

Rin’s blood ran cold.

”He’s alive.”

Seraphine didn’t confirm it. She didn’t deny it either. Instead, she touched the pendant around her neck.

”Your father is not someone the God can simply kill.”

Sol stared at her.

”Then where is he?”

Seraphine looked toward the forest.

”Somewhere beyond this world’s reach.”

Rin’s eyes widened.

”Another world?”

She nodded.

”Maybe.”

”Maybe?”

”He moves between worlds.”

Rin thought of Eryon. Of the worlds beyond worlds. Of the strange rules governing gods. And suddenly, something clicked.

”That’s why Eryon knows him.”

Seraphine looked at him.

”Yes.”

Rin’s voice became quiet.

”And that’s why you knew Eryon before.”

”Yes.”

”Because Dad knew him.”

”Yes.”

Rin stared at the pendant.

”Then why does everyone keep calling me his child?”

Seraphine smiled sadly.

”Because you are.”

Rin shook his head.

”No. I mean Eryon.”

Seraphine’s eyes softened.

”Eryon loved you like a younger brother.”

She looked toward the distant mountains.

”But he also made a promise to your father.”

”What promise?”

She hesitated.

”That if anything happened to him...”

A pause.

”...Eryon would protect both of his sons.”

Sol’s breath caught. Rin looked at him.

”Both.”

Seraphine nodded.

”Yes.”

Rin finally understood. His mother hadn’t hidden their father because she was ashamed of him.

She had hidden him because someone was hunting him. And perhaps... that someone was still hunting him.

A cold wind moved through the forest.

The System appeared beside Sol.

[NEW INFORMATION DETECTED.]

[FATHER — STATUS: UNKNOWN.]

[LOCATION: UNKNOWN.]

[IDENTITY: SEALED.]

Sol stared. Rin sighed.

”Of course.”

Sol looked at him.

”You okay?”

Rin smiled.

”No.”

”Good.”

Rin laughed.

”You’re terrible.”

”I’m your brother.”

”Unfortunately.”

Sol smiled.

”Fortunately.”

Rin looked at him.

And for a moment, the mysteries didn’t matter. Not the God. Not the World. Not the forgotten divine name.

Not the father hidden between worlds. Not even the million lives waiting behind memories.

For now, Rin had his brother beside him.

And somewhere beyond the boundaries of this world... a man whose face neither of them could remember was still alive.

Waiting.

Watching.

And carrying a secret that could change everything they believed about Rin’s first life.
