Quick Transmigration: The Cannon Fodder's Comeback in the Era Tales

Chapter 200: Chapter 200: Hapless Eldest Sister 14

In the evening, at the dinner table, there was finally a bowl of porridge for Yuan Chun.

However, Yuan Chun’s eyes were brimming with tears, accusing Mrs. Zhong, ”Mom, last time Yuan Fen just caught a mild cold, and you felt sorry for her, giving her special treatment with steamed egg custard. I’ve had so many illnesses and severe malnutrition, the doctor said I need to eat more good food to nourish my body. Mom, why don’t you give me special treatment? Am I really not your biological daughter? How can you treat your eldest and youngest daughters so differently?”

Mrs. Zhong’s face turned gloomy, unable to maintain her kind mother persona any longer.

She said coldly, ”We only have a few eggs left at home, those are for your dad. He works hard, and without eating well, how can he earn money to provide for your food, drink, and schooling? Today’s hospital visit cost half a month of your dad’s salary. Next month, besides for your dad, no one will have eggs.”

Mr. Zhong returned from work, and before he got home, he was approached by several elder ladies in the housing complex who told him about the hospital incident, criticizing him for mistreating his eldest daughter.

So, Mr. Zhong said, ”Xiao Lan, cook one egg each day for Yuan Chun. I can go without eating for a few days.”

”How can that be, your work is heavy...”

”It’s okay, when I get off, I’ll go to the village to buy some eggs, and then we can all eat together.” Mr. Zhong interrupted his wife and gave her a meaningful look.

Mrs. Zhong immediately fell silent.

Eggs at the supply and demand store cost five cents each and require an egg ticket, which Mrs. Zhong would secretly sell each month. The eggs the Zhong Family ate were bought from the village by Yuan Chun, costing five cents each and not requiring a ticket, yet Yuan Chun never tasted the eggs herself.

Yuan Chun looked at Mr. Zhong with a face full of gratitude, ”Dad, thank you. I’ve grown up without ever tasting an egg, not even knowing what eggs taste like. Watching my younger siblings eat an egg every day, I also want to eat them, but mom said, as the eldest sister, I should let the younger siblings have the tasty food. So, even when I craved them, even when these eggs were bought with my own earnings, I held back from saying I wanted to eat eggs. Actually, I do want to eat them. Dad, thank you, now I can have eggs too.”

These words made Mr. Zhong feel somewhat ashamed and embarrassed.

He said awkwardly, ”In the future, Dad will buy more eggs to make sure you all can eat one every day.”

”Dear...”

Mrs. Zhong got anxious, trying to argue back, but was silenced by a stern look from Mr. Zhong.

This family was always dominated by Mrs. Zhong. The children were also watched over and educated by Mrs. Zhong. Mr. Zhong was taciturn, disliked speaking, only focusing on work to earn money and never bothering with household or children’s affairs.

However, Yuan Chun did not believe it. In the previous life, when the original was mistreated by the family, Mr. Zhong couldn’t have been completely unaware.

He was neither blind nor deaf, just didn’t want to break the family harmony. If sacrificing the eldest daughter could bring a happy and harmonious family, he would pretend to be blind and deaf, ignoring the grievances endured by the eldest daughter.

Moreover, the original’s experiences were likely approved by him.

Otherwise, would Mrs. Zhong dare to exploit the original alone completely?

Even eventually marrying off the original to an old widower without a penny of dowry; if Mr. Zhong were unwilling, wouldn’t he have stepped in to stop it?

Just now, a single look was enough to silence Mrs. Zhong, showing clearly that Mrs. Zhong feared Mr. Zhong.

So actually, it was always Mr. Zhong who had the ultimate say in this family.

And the reason why the original was exploited in the past life was actually approved by Mr. Zhong.

Heh, these two scumbags...

Yuan Chun lowered her head to drink the porridge, hiding the coldness in her eyes.
