Reborn and Counterattack: The CEO's Powerful Sweetheart

Chapter 1209: Chapter 1208: I Heard...

The night robbed the world of its light.

The moon, stained a blood-red, hung high in the sky, scattered stars shining over the whole firmament.

Under the willow tree, the villager watching over the graves sneezed, tightened his coarse cotton jacket, and said, ”Damn, this weather really is cold.”

The other villager on watch stood opposite him, carrying a hand lantern. He said, ”My wife said there’ll be rain tonight, don’t know if she’s right.”

”Even a rainstorm we can’t dodge, talk about lousy luck.” The man under the willow hugged his shoulders and said, ”Endless shifts guarding the cemetery is one thing, but we still gotta stand out here and get pelted by raindrops, while the village chief’s all comfy, hugging his wife and burrowing under the quilt.”

The villager with the lantern cursed and said, ”You got a death wish or what, dare to say anything.”

The head of a village was no different from a local tyrant; whatever he said was an order, and the villagers all had to listen.

What’s more, Yanggou Village had an ancestral hall and a family register. If you pissed off the village chief, he’d find some excuse, and with just one word your whole family would be struck off.

The villager under the willow grinned, clearly not bothered, and said, ”What’s there to be scared of, it’s just us brothers out here, nobody to spread gossip.”

According to the village rules, those who came out to watch the graves did so by household—two brothers from one family—so they didn’t have to mind their words and spoke more freely.

The villager with the lantern thought about it and felt the same, letting his own words run loose: ”Our village cemetery’s gotta have good feng shui, spiritual energy and all that, otherwise how come it’s attracted so many outsiders? Didn’t you see the last few batches that came, all rich folks? I heard there were even people coming here as Trainees...”

The villager under the willow lit a cigarette, very much in agreement, and said, ”Folks from other villages have asked me too, said our Yanggou Village must have some Treasure. Outsiders are digging three feet into the ground trying to find something, and we still gotta watch every day so they don’t steal it away. Really is hard work.

If you ask me, our village chief definitely knows what’s going on, he’s just hiding it from us. Tell me... if there really is some Treasure and they dig it up, then give the village a share, wouldn’t we all get rich?”

The villager with the lantern frowned and said, ”That’s something we can’t talk nonsense about. They say the cemetery’s been protecting our village folk for generations, people’s feng shui being good, bringing in fortune and all that—no idea if it’s true or not. Besides, messing with other people’s graves at will is asking for bad luck.”

...

The two villagers were on night watch at the cemetery, bored out of their minds, chatting idly under the tree about things everyone in the village already knew.

Their voices weren’t loud, yet they echoed around the outer edge of the graves. The area was open; if anyone came in, they would see them with their own eyes. If not for that, they wouldn’t be talking so freely.

On the left side under the tree, about ten steps from the willow, two figures lay prone in the bushes. They were dressed in black, melting into the night. They had been lying there for over an hour, and still no one had noticed.

From this spot, the terrain was excellent. Not only could they clearly hear the conversation, they could also observe the villagers’ positions and see whether they would leave.

’Drip—’

Raindrops started to fall.

The villager under the willow looked up at the sky and said, ”Damn, can’t be this unlucky, it really started raining. My sister-in-law’s pretty accurate...”

The lantern-carrying villager hunched his shoulders and moved closer to the tree for cover, saying, ”There’s probably a big storm coming tonight, the rain won’t be light. In a bit let’s head into the room, no need for us brothers to suffer out here.”

Outside, near the cemetery, there was a small house specifically for the Night Watchman to rest in.

In the past, when they were on watch, they’d always hole up in there; it was a bit warmer too.

It was just that lately inspections had been stricter, and they were afraid something might happen, so they stayed outside to keep watch.
