Rebirth: Splendid Marriage in the 80s

Chapter 2974: Chapter 2910: Likes Climbing Walls

It takes an hour to drive to the First Science Research Institute.

The roads here are rather winding, and with the darkness, it was already ten o’clock at night when they arrived.

The surrounding area was completely dark, with only two or three windows lit up at the academy.

Occasional barking of dogs could be heard from afar.

The moonlight was sparse, with a few thin cloud shadows.

It was very quiet, so quiet that their arrival seemed to break the tranquility of the area.

”It’s so late, Director Fan surely wouldn’t be asleep, would he?”

Jiang Xiao thought coming to find someone this late was indeed a bit too much. In this era, there wasn’t much entertainment, and everyone slept early. Ten o’clock was already considered late night.

”He doesn’t sleep that early. He’s always working tirelessly.”

Meng Xinian replied, leading her toward the main gate.

But the gatehouse was locked, and there was no one around.

”How do we get in?”

”We’ll have to climb the wall.” Meng Xinian suggested.

Jiang Xiao was momentarily taken aback, but she saw him kick the ground, his figure rising without a running start, already on the wall.

He extended his hand to pull Jiang Xiao up.

The two of them climbed over and landed silently.

Jiang Xiao, half crying and half laughing, asked, ”Do you often climb over the wall to get in?”

”This First Science Research Institute isn’t given much importance,” Meng Xinian said in a lowered voice, ”So a lot of things aren’t done properly. I’ve always climbed over the wall, even when the gatekeeper is there.”

”Do you enjoy climbing walls that much?”

”It’s convenient and saves time.” Meng Xinian said, leading her past a building in front, to the back, running a bit more until they reached an iron gate. He extended his hand toward her.

”Another hairpin?” Although Jiang Xiao was filled with black lines on her face, she handed him a hairpin, watching as he fiddled with it briefly and reached inside to unlock it.

He pulled the door open with a screech.

”Who’s there?”

A low shout suddenly came from the stairs beyond the door, followed by a flashlight beam shining onto their faces.

Jiang Xiao immediately moved behind Meng Xinian.

It truly felt like being caught red-handed doing something wrong. She thought it was better to let him take the blame.

As she was thinking this, she heard the person call out Meng Xinian’s name in surprise.

”Little Xi?”

Pfft, Little Xi?

Why does that sound like a little puppy? Such a nickname doesn’t match Tyrant Meng’s demeanor at all.

But she sighed in relief. It seemed this person was indeed Director Fan.

”Uncle Fan, I told you, don’t call me Little Xi,” Meng Xinian said helplessly, pulling Jiang Xiao from behind him and leading her upstairs.

”What’s wrong with calling it? Isn’t it your name? How come you’re here at this time?”

”I knew you definitely weren’t asleep yet, so I came over since I needed something.”

”Come on up, I just happened to be headed to the bathroom, otherwise I wouldn’t have seen you.”

By this time, Jiang Xiao had already taken a good look at Director Fan.

He was very thin, with salt-and-pepper hair, wearing a white shirt that seemed long washed and a pair of army green trousers. He wore thick black-framed glasses, had deep wrinkles, and his lips were cracked in several places, looking like someone who was so engrossed in research that he didn’t even have time to drink water.

Such a person seemed like they wouldn’t have any thoughts outside of research.

They followed him down a long corridor, with only the sound of their footsteps echoing, making the place sound even more vast and empty.
