Rebirth: Splendid Marriage in the 80s

Chapter 2962: Chapter 2898: Conditions for Marriage

Meng Sheng paused for a moment, then let out a bitter laugh, saying, ”She probably thinks I’m not capable enough. Her family introduced her to a department chief.”

Upon hearing this, Jiang Xiao understood.

”You two dated for so many years without getting married?”

”I wanted to get married before, but her family said they wanted the five major items, plus an eight thousand eight hundred and eighty monetary gift. I’ve been saving, haven’t I?”

”You haven’t saved enough after all these years?”

”To put it bluntly, maybe we just aren’t destined,” Meng Sheng sighed and said, ”I just managed to save up, and on the day I wanted to tell her, she beat me to it by saying she wanted to break up. In the end, I didn’t get the chance to say it.”

His friends and relatives actually thought he was already married for the past two years.

He would always go to her family’s house to help out, and when people asked him, he would say he was going to his in-laws’ place.

Who knew they actually weren’t married?

”Then,” Jiang Xiao asked, ”are you still unable to let her go now?”

”Not really, it’s just that my feelings are a bit complex.”

He felt embarrassed to be so explicit with Jiang Xiao.

In fact, over the years, his interactions with his partner were rather plain because she mostly asked him to go to her house to help with chores, and the time they spent alone together was limited. During their time together, she was always rather indifferent, constantly asking him how much of the monetary gift he had saved.

Sometimes, when he wanted to be a bit affectionate, her question made him lose interest.

Still, after so many years, it was impossible to say he didn’t feel a bit reluctant.

Now, he’s thinking he might as well not dwell on these matters, focus on his work first, and if there’s any improvement, he can have more confidence in his future relationship.

To prevent people from looking down on him again.

After understanding everything, Jiang Xiao just nodded and didn’t say anything further.

The happiest today was Old Meng. He had already borrowed a large round table and twelve chairs in the morning.

No household had that many chairs, so half were borrowed from the big courtyard’s canteen, and the other half were borrowed from several families.

One table was set up in the shade of the courtyard, and another in the dining room.

Although the two tables weren’t set up together, there was a row of glass windows between the dining room and the outside, so once the windows were pushed open, it was almost like setting them up together.

”It’s the first time we’ve had such a lively day in our family.”

Old Meng watched as dishes were brought to the table, itching to help.

Meng Xinian shouted, ”Old man! Stay where you are!”

The kitchen floor was probably a bit slippery. Why would he, leaning on a cane, still want to go in and out?

With so many people helping, it was enough.

At this moment, Chen Yin and Wang Yi had arrived, and as soon as they came, they rolled up their sleeves to help. Jiang Xiao and Meng Xinian weren’t shy with them.

”Alright, alright, I’ll just wait for the guests here, is that okay?”

Old Meng said with a smile and a teasing remark, ”You brat, with so many guests at this time, at least call me grandpa, don’t just keep calling me old man, have some manners.”

”Fine, just stay there.” Meng Xinian snorted.

”Old Meng, Alliance Officer Meng, sorry for intruding today.”

At this point, Director Jin and his family of three and Principal Liu Guoying also arrived.

Old Meng and Meng Chaozhang promptly went forward to greet them.

”Come now, come now, I’m so happy you could come! Happy!” Old Meng laughed heartily, ”Please take a seat, let’s sit inside; let’s leave the outside table to the young people.”
