Rebirth: Splendid Marriage in the 80s

Chapter 2467: Chapter 2403: The Fire Before the Grave

”Moreover, you don’t know what kind of woman Mother Xinian was; she was truly a good woman, and also a good mother. After marrying into the Meng Family, she always treated me with respect and care, and was gentle and considerate towards Chao Jun. They truly had a very happy period together. Later on, Nian Che appeared, and from the start, he went home with a sullen face, causing a scene, implying that Chenger shouldn’t have married Chao Jun while he was away from home, and he talked a lot about their childhood.”

At that time, did they not notice anything amiss when things escalated to this point?

Old Meng said, ”We really didn’t think much of it then. We thought they were truly just siblings who got along well. It was natural for the brother to be upset that his sister got married while he was away and couldn’t attend.”

Chiang Xiao was speechless.

If they were normal siblings with a close relationship, how could it be possible not to inform the brother of such a significant event like a wedding?

It was abnormal from the start.

Old Meng didn’t intend to delve much into their past emotions, and said briefly, ”Ever since that incident, Chenger would occasionally go out, and later on, she seemed a bit absent-minded and wasn’t as attentive to family matters as before, which made Chao Jun somewhat suspicious.”

”Suspicious? Suspicious of Nian Che?”

”This...actually, Nian Che was supposedly not in Capital City at that time.”

Not in Capital City?

Then who was Meng Chaojun suspicious of?

”I didn’t know much about their situations back then,” Old Meng said, ”Only later, when Chenger passed away, Chao Jun became ill for a full half month from the day she died. Chenger’s funeral arrangements were actually handled by me along with Meng Sheng’s parents, and later...”

He paused here.

Chiang Xiao had a hunch that he was about to mention Nian Che.

”Nian Che went to the cemetery and yet an accident occurred. It was said that he wanted to pour a bottle of wine in front of Chenger’s grave as tribute, but ended up using a high-proof wine, and when he splashed it onto the white candle flame, the fire surged up and burned his face.”

Chiang Xiao listened, heart racing.

”No way! How is that possible?”

How could something like that happen?

When wine is poured over candle flames, shouldn’t the fire be extinguished? What kind of high-proof wine would suddenly ignite like that?

This is simply horrifying.

Old Meng shook his head and said, ”I only heard from the doctor, who said that this was roughly what happened. At that time, he was wearing a scarf; the scarf was made of wool, covering his face, so it burned fiercely once ignited. Also, that bottle of wine was later believed to be the kind used for lighting lamps, and he was already drunk himself that day, so he wasn’t very clear-headed.”

Chiang Xiao never expected that the truth behind Nian Che’s disfigurement would be like this.

In front of Nian Chengcheng’s tomb? Burned his own face?

Who could be blamed for that?

If superstitious, one might even say he must have done something to wrong Nian Chengcheng, causing such a bizarre incident.

”Couldn’t it be that Nian Che, because he was injured in front of Mother Xinian’s grave, vented his anger on her and the Meng family?”

Old Meng was lost in memories.

He recalled the situation when he saw Nian Che that day.

”You say I’m a bit afraid of Nian Che, perhaps because I always remember when he came to the courtyard, I saw him from afar. At that time, Xinian was playing alone in the courtyard. I was originally going to find him to go home, and then I saw Nian Che. Nian Che was standing behind a tree, staring at Xinian for a long time. Then I saw him start walking towards Xinian, pulling out a handkerchief from his pocket.”
