Rebirth: Splendid Marriage in the 80s

Chapter 1250: Chapter 1251: Unwilling to Perform

”Why didn’t Meng Xinian show surprise at her catching so many prey?”

”Why?!”

”She actually caught two rabbits, two pheasants, and a clutch of bird eggs!”

She thought about Meng Xinian’s hearty appetite, not wanting him to go hungry in the mountains, and besides, the game on Bai Gu Mountain tasted exceptionally good. He had only ever had the dishes she cooked and then sent to him, never having savored the freshly caught and roasted meat there, steaming hot and fragrant. She just wanted him to eat a little more, which is why she caught so much.

But to her surprise, he didn’t seem astonished at all when he saw the catch!

He didn’t even ask her about it, let alone praise her for her prowess!

Why was that?

Could it be that he had grown numb to her good fortune after hearing about it too much from her grandfather?

As Chiang Xiao was pondering this question, Meng Xinian realized it as well.

He didn’t show any surprise, nor did he compliment Chiang Xiaoxiao.

Truly, he was so shocked that he didn’t even notice his own slip-ups.

But right now, Meng Xinian honestly didn’t know what he was feeling; he only knew that what he had might be more than just the treasure he had once thought – Chiang Xiaoxiao might also be a treasure in another sense.

This realization threw Meng Xinian into a rare state of confusion.

Though his mind was in disarray, his hands continued to work steadily.

They had dealt with game many times before when they were outside, so he was quite skilled at it.

”I’ve gathered plenty of firewood, is this enough?” Chiang Xiao placed the firewood on the ground, looking towards Meng Xinian.

He looked really handsome with his sleeves rolled up and busy at work.

”That’s enough, go wash your hands and rest for a bit, leave the rest to me,” Meng Xinian said.

”Okay.”

Chiang Xiao went to wash her hands, and after a few steps, she couldn’t help but turn back to look at Meng Xinian.

He still wasn’t showing much of anything.

Meng Xinian felt that since he hadn’t shown shock or surprise at the beginning, to act surprised now would seem insincere.

He was not willing to act in front of Chiang Xiaoxiao.

He didn’t even want to deceive her like that.

So, better to leave things as they were. If she noticed something, perhaps they could take the opportunity to clear things up. If she didn’t notice or didn’t want to say anything, then he would just remain silent.

He wouldn’t pressure her.

He also needed to think carefully – if Chiang Xiao’s secret was indeed as unfathomable as he couldn’t even imagine, what should he do?

Although they each had their own thoughts, their hearts were filled with love. Being together, they still found the time very beautiful.

As the sun set, the rabbits and pheasants were cooked to perfection.

The aroma wafted through the air, tempting their taste buds.

Meng Xinian tore off a rabbit leg and handed it to Chiang Xiao.

But Chiang Xiao pushed it back, ”You eat the first bite. I just wanted you to taste the delicacies of Bai Gu Mountain. Right here on the mountain, enjoying the mountain views, the breeze, sitting on the grass, eating the game from the mountain.”

Meng Xinian felt a warmth in his heart and took her advice, biting into it generously.

The rabbit leg was roasted just perfectly; the skin was slightly crispy, but the meat was tender and juicy. When he bit into it, the flavors burst in his mouth.

Some game meats tend to have a gamey taste and be tough or chewy, but strangely, the game from Bai Gu Mountain was exceptionally delicious, and the meat was especially tender.

After taking a bite, Meng Xinian handed the rabbit leg back to Chiang Xiao.

”Can’t I just tear off another piece?”
