Rebirth: Splendid Marriage in the 80s

Chapter 429: Chapter 429: Hard to Explain

Chiang Xiao knew about taxis, she just hadn’t expected there to be rental cars available already.

Indeed, as soon as they exited the train station, they saw several uniformly red cars parked along the roadside.

Hu Xibing had taken one last time he was here, but still felt somewhat uneasy. However, with two sick people in tow, they couldn’t delay and quickly got into a taxi.

”Driver, to the hospital.”

”Oh my, the aunt and the kid both have a fever, don’t they? Their faces are all red.” The driver noticed right away and swiftly drove off.

Hu Xibing, with his heart in his throat, sat in the passenger seat and turned to Chiang Xiao, ”Don’t be scared, okay?”

He thought it must be Chiang Xiao’s first time in such a small car.

He had ridden in them while in the army, after all, and had been taken for a ride a couple of times during his last visit. He had heard that some people weren’t used to riding in such vehicles and could get car sick immediately.

Hu Xibing was therefore worried that Chiang Xiao might get car sick too.

However, his concern was unnecessary.

Chiang Xiao was doing just fine, even though the taxi was far from comfortable.

The driver had good skills, and since there were not many cars on the road now, they quickly arrived at the hospital.

After a flurry of activity, Aunt Shi and Little Tiger were admitted to the hospital, hooked up to IVs, and Hu Xibing along with Chiang Xiao felt as if they had been through a battle.

Though physically draining, it was mentally exhausting too.

Before they could even catch their breath, a stern glance from the doctor left them somewhat dumbfounded.

”How do you take care of people? This has been going on for two or three days, hasn’t it? The fever keeps coming back, and you didn’t bring them to the hospital sooner. And what about this elderly lady? You don’t feed her at home every day?” A doctor in a white coat rounded on Hu Xibing with harsh words. ”The old lady has severe anemia and malnutrition, it’s very serious!”

When the nurses saw her hand, as thin as dry wood, while trying to insert a needle, they were startled.

Chiang Xiao touched her nose and quietly stepped back a bit.

After all, she was still young, so the misunderstanding wouldn’t fall on her, right? Better to let Brother Hu take the fall alone.

However, she rejoiced too soon.

No sooner had she stepped back than the doctor’s gaze swept over like radar, looking at her angrily, ”And you, I have never seen anything like this before. The granddaughter is plump and fair, with cheeks you could squeeze water from, while the grandmother and brother are so thin, they look like refugees who haven’t eaten in three years! I’ve only heard of favoring males over females, yet this is the first time I’ve seen favoring a female over a male! What an eye-opener! Young lady, with such a delicate and pretty face, how can you be so unfilial?”

Hu Xibing didn’t want to laugh, but he couldn’t help feeling uncomfortable.

He had seen the unhonorable way Chiang Xiao had moved aside, but he never expected that someone wouldn’t be fooled by Chiang Xiao’s appearance and scold her as an unfilial granddaughter.

Chiang Xiao was also at a loss, forced to offer an explanation, ”Doctor, she’s not my grandmother...”

”What’s this? Denying your grandmother now? Alright, you say she’s not your grandmother, but surely this little boy is your brother, isn’t he? You yourself look as smooth as a white egg, but look at your brother, his face is all gaunt, can you not see that? And look at what you’re wearing, surely a nice shirt, all dolled up like a flower, then look at your brother, wearing clothes with patches on them!”

”Doctor, he’s not my brother either...”

Before Chiang Xiao could finish, Little Tiger woke up, heard her voice, and weakly called out, ”Sister...”
