Dungeon Master (Karma System)

The merchant arrived through the Crag Mountain stables carrying a stone tablet in a padded grain box.

She gave her name as Lessa Vorn, paid the stable fee, and followed the painted signs toward the public portal. The gnome at the registration desk barely looked at the two wagons of cloth samples behind her. His attention settled on the box held between Lessa and one of her guards.

”Something fragile?” He asked, seeing how they moved the item with great care.

”Extremely.”

”Magical?”

”It used to be.”

The gnome produced a red tag and attached it to the box. ”Do not open it inside a stable, tavern, hospital, race vessel, or within ten feet of an unattended child.”

Lessa looked at the warning. ”Why a race vessel?”

”Someone always believes the rules do not apply to their specific object.”

The portal carried her party from the stables to the Sanctuary. Lessa had expected a market built around an underground road. She stopped in the public square and stared at the false sky, distant lake, and miniature airships circling the outer hills. This was much more than what she imagined when she first heard about this place.

Her guard shifted the box in his arms. ”Where now?”

Lessa looked down at the trade notice in her hand. Gibble-Hammer Workshop. Undercity commercial district. Inquiries involving unusual machinery, runic equipment, or wholesale production accepted.

”We are heading to the Undercity.” She said.

Hammer Cartwright opened the box before asking how much the tablet was worth.

Gibble objected to the order of those actions. Lessa objected to opening it at all until they agreed to an inspection fee. Hammer had already removed the first layer of padding.

The tablet was not made from a single slab. Twelve narrow plates of black stone sat within a bronze frame, each covered in fine runes. Small copper keys lined the lower edge. A crystal the size of a fingernail had been set into the upper corner. One side of the frame had cracked. Three plates were chipped, and the final row of runes ended in a melted groove.

Hammer forgot the argument. There were more important things to concern himself with.

”It’s a pattern archive.” He said with understanding once he got a good look at the item that had been brought to him.

Lessa watched his hands. ”That is what the seller claimed.”

”Where did you find it?” Gibble asked.

”A collapsed estate outside Narin. The family sold everything that could be moved before their creditors arrived. I bought six crates without sorting them.”

Hammer pressed one of the copper keys.

The crystal brightened. A line of blue symbols appeared above the tablet, hovered for half a second, and folded into a snarled knot of light.

Gibble slapped the key away. The projection vanished.

”Do that again after I build a shield around it.” Gibble said with exasperation.

”It was a simple light pattern.” Hammer argued.

”It became a simple fire pattern immediately before I stopped it.”

Lessa cleared her throat. ”Can it be repaired?”

The brothers looked at each other.

”Maybe.” Hammer said.

”Expensively.” Gibble added.

They contacted Max before Lessa could decide whether those answers were encouraging.

Max arrived with Quin and Anna. The workshop’s automatic arms continued producing nails in the next room, striking metal with a rhythm that made quiet conversation impossible near the door. Gibble led everyone to the design table and closed the partition.

Hammer had placed a metal screen around the tablet.

”This stores runic sequences.” He explained. ”Not the power. Not the finished enchantment. The pattern itself.”

Quin leaned over the damaged plates without touching them. ”A runesmith could preserve work without copying every line by hand.”

”More than that. If the projection lattice is intact, it can reproduce the sequence at different sizes while maintaining proportion.” Hammer pointed at the copper keys. ”Weapon inscription, structural wards, small mechanisms. Anything that uses the same pattern repeatedly.”

Max looked through the partition toward the factory lines.

The automatic hands were excellent at repeating exact movements. They were much less useful when every item required a runesmith to redraw a complicated sequence. A working pattern archive could bridge part of that gap.

”Why did it nearly catch fire?” Anna asked.

Gibble tapped the melted groove at the bottom. ”Every stored sequence ends with the same control line. That line tells the projection where the pattern stops. The damage changes the final instruction.”

”So the tablet continues the pattern.” Quin said.

”It invents the rest.” Hammer corrected. ”Badly. And because of the fault, it can’t stop itself.”

Lessa rested both hands on the table. ”I brought it here because the workshop buys unusual equipment. I did not agree to donate it.”

”And we have not asked you to.” Anna said.

That shifted the conversation away from what the tablet might do and toward what each person would risk.

Lessa possessed the device and four other damaged pattern plates recovered from the estate. Hammer understood its runes well enough to attempt a repair but could not promise the effort would succeed. Gibble had the equipment and materials needed to rebuild the frame.

Quin pointed out the most important limitation.

”We do not know whether the tablet can store a new pattern.” He said. ”You all are thinking it is programable but it may only reproduce whatever survived on those plates.”

Hammer’s excitement dimmed slightly.

”We also do not know whether its projections remain accurate after resizing.” Quin continued. ”Or whether the corruption affected lines other than the ending command. At present, you have found a valuable experiment.”

”Not a fortune.” Max said.

Lessa smiled faintly. ”Merchants prefer experiments when someone else pays for them.”

”Dungeon Masters do too.”

Anna took out a blank contract sheet.

They agreed to a limited trial. Lessa retained ownership of the tablet and supplied the surviving pattern plates. Gibble-Hammer would repair and test the mechanism in exchange for the right to use it during the trial. Max provided access to an advanced runesmith trainer, a shielded testing room, and a small material allowance. If the device produced marketable goods, the Dungeon Core would sell them through the existing wholesale channel and divide the return according to their contributions.

If it failed, nobody would owe Lessa the fortune she hoped it might have been worth.

Lessa studied Max across the table. ”You could simply offer to buy it.”

”I could.” Max said. ”Then I would own an object that currently turns light runes into fire.

Anna placed three conditions beneath the trial agreement. The tablet had to reproduce the same pattern ten times without variation. A qualified runesmith had to inspect every result. Nothing produced during testing could be sold until the workshop proved the projected guide did not weaken with repeated use.

Quin added a fourth condition. They would test the object on copper, iron, wood, and stone before anyone attempted a valuable material.

”One success will tell us the repair works once.” He said. ”Repeatability is the entire reason this device matters.”

Lessa considered that before signing. She had arrived hoping to sell an unknown treasure quickly. The trial offered less immediate gold but left her with ownership if the treasure proved real.

”Thirty days.” She agreed. ”And I receive a copy of every test record.”

”Every legible test record.” Gibble said, looking at his brother.

Hammer appeared offended. ”My records are perfectly legible to me.”

”Thirty days.” Anna said. ”Then all parties decide whether to extend the arrangement.”

Lessa read every line twice. Hammer attempted to point out the repair bench while she was reading and received an elbow from his brother.

”Agreed.” The merchant said at last.

The first three days produced smoke, one cracked lens, and a copper plate covered in runes that translated loosely as heat, turn, blue, and fish.

No one had instructed the plate to do anything involving fish.

Gibble hung it on the wall, like a parent would do with their child’s ugly art project.

On the fourth day, the advanced trainer identified the tablet’s final control line as a loop closure used by an older school of runecraft. The damaged groove had removed only seven symbols, but those symbols told the tablet to return to the beginning, compare the projected pattern to the stored one, and stop if they matched.

The trainer also found that two of the twelve plates were not patterns at all. They were indexing plates. Without them in the correct positions, the tablet selected lines from neighboring sequences and combined them. Hammer had spent three days repairing the ending command while the device attempted to finish the wrong beginning.

He rearranged the plates according to the index. The snarled projections became recognizable. One described the warming rune. Another held a preservation mark used on food containers. A third appeared to control the speed of a small rotating mechanism. The remaining patterns were too damaged to identify safely.

Lessa watched the list grow without pretending all of it was valuable. ”Travel cups, storage boxes, and a wheel that may spin.”

”A precisely controlled wheel.” Hammer said.

”That may spin.”

Hammer could not restore the original stone. He built a removable bronze bridge across the damaged section instead. Tiny adjustable pins allowed him to change the closing instruction without altering the surviving plates.

They tested the repair on the least ambitious pattern available: a minor warming rune used for travel cups.

Max, Anna, Quin, Lessa, and both Cartwright brothers stood behind the shield in the testing room. A blank copper square rested beneath the tablet’s crystal.

Hammer pressed the first key.

Blue lines appeared above the plate. They remained straight this time. The pattern descended until it touched the copper, leaving a faint guide that the automatic arm traced with a steel point.

The final line closed and nothing caught fire.

Gibble carried the plate to the enchanting bench and supplied a thread of mana. The copper warmed beneath his palm.

He turned it over, checked every line, and passed it to Quin.

”Simple.” Gibble said with pride as if restoring the device had been the easiest thing in the world.

Hammer grinned. ”Successful.”

”Simple and successful.”

Lessa held out her hand. Quin gave her the plate. Its heat was no stronger than a cup of tea, but she treated it more carefully than the original tablet.

”How many can it make?” she asked.

”That is the next test.” Max said.

They did not celebrate a new factory, promise thousands of enchanted weapons, or calculate profits from patterns they had not repaired. One working warming rune proved only that the tablet could reproduce one simple sequence.

It also proved the experiment was worth continuing.

The next morning, a small sign appeared in the Gibble-Hammer shop.

RUNESMITHS WANTED FOR PAID PATTERN VERIFICATION.
