Dungeon Master (Karma System)

The reply from Evan’s family arrived wrapped around a drawing.

The Sanctuary courier placed it in his hand after his morning shift at the stables. Evan recognized his mother’s writing immediately. He sat on an overturned bucket beside an empty stall and unfolded the letter carefully enough not to tear the smaller sheet inside.

His little sister had drawn the wooden horse he sent her.

At least, Evan assumed it was the horse. It had six legs, a purple mane, and what appeared to be wings. The crooked wheel had been drawn much larger than the other three.

Elly had named it Lord Limpington. Evan laughed loudly enough to make the mare in the next stall raise her head.

His mother’s letter thanked him for the coins and assured him they had used most of them to settle the miller’s account. His father had repaired the leak above the kitchen. His older brother still believed Evan had found steady work in a distant town and complained that Evan’s letters did not describe the town well enough.

Then his mother asked whether he was eating properly. Evan folded the letter along its existing creases and tucked it into his pocket.

He had not lied about having work. The stables paid him. He had friends. He slept in a safe room, ate every day, and sent more money home than he ever earned in the village.

He had only neglected to mention that his new home was inside a dungeon and that he regularly entered a moonlit forest where redcaps tried to kill him.

That omission felt larger every time his family wrote back.

Nella found him an hour later outside the basic class trainer hall.

”You came.” She said.

”I said I would.” Evan answered.

”You also said you would stop giving away half your dinner whenever Jory claimed to be starving.”

”He looked hungry.”

”Jory always looks hungry.”

Nella took the folded reply he offered her and smiled at Elly’s drawing. She did not ask to read the letter.

”Lord Limpington?”

”Apparently.”

”A noble name.”

Bram waited inside with Jory and Kelan. They had come because none of them trusted Evan to choose a class without finding a way to apologize to the trainer for taking too much time.

The Guardian hall occupied one of the broad rooms near the front of the building. Shields covered its walls. Some were round, some narrow, and some large enough to hide a fully armored person. The class trainer waiting in the practice square carried none of them.

She was an orc woman with gray hair and a nose that had been broken more than once.

”Evan.” She said. ”Undecided class. Several unsuccessful attempts at Fey Nights. You place yourself between danger and your companions even when doing so is tactically foolish.”

Evan glanced at Nella.

”I did not tell her that.” Nella said.

”The trainer can see your records.” Bram reminded him.

The orc woman pointed at a rack. ”Choose a shield.”

Evan selected one close to the size he rented for dungeon runs. The trainer placed Nella behind him and threw a padded ball at Evan’s left shoulder.

He caught it on the shield.

The second ball came from the right and struck Nella in the chest.

”You protected yourself.” the trainer said.

”I thought—”

”You looked at the first attack and forgot the person behind you. Again.”

The lesson lasted forty minutes. Evan learned that standing in front of someone was not the same as guarding them. He had to control the space around the party, understand where his companions intended to move, and decide which danger mattered most. The trainer made him hold the shield high, low, close, and angled. Every correction exposed another habit he had not known he possessed.

At the end, a pale system window appeared before him.

[Basic class requirements met.]

[Available class: Guardian.]

[A Guardian controls danger, protects allies, and holds when others cannot.]

[Select Guardian?]

Evan read it twice.

Most people selected a class years earlier. He had delayed because his village could not afford trainers and because choosing a path felt like claiming a future he had not earned. Guardian was not a rare class. It did not promise glory, wealth, or impressive magic. But it described what he kept trying to become. It aligned with his heart’s desire.

Evan selected yes.

Warmth passed through his chest and settled into his arms. The shield did not become lighter. His mistakes did not disappear. He simply understood its weight more clearly than before.

[Class selected: Guardian.]

[Basic skill pathway unlocked: Guarded Position.]

Jory slapped him on the back. Kelan did the same because allowing his brother to be first was unacceptable.

Nella hugged him.

The trainer waited until they finished. ”A class is permission to begin learning. It is not proof that you have learned.”

Evan straightened. ”Yes, ma’am.”

”Good. Return tomorrow. We have much work to do.”

They entered Fey Nights that evening.

The fog covered the trail exactly as it had during their previous attempts.

Evan did not feel strong enough to make the forest safe.

They moved slowly. Bram watched the trail ahead. Jory and Kelan watched opposite sides, though they argued twice over where one side ended and the other began. Nella remained close enough to touch Evan’s shoulder whenever she needed him to shift.

When quicklings tested their packs, nobody chased them.

When a satyr offered directions in exchange for a song, Nella sang badly enough that even the satyr asked her to stop. He still pointed them toward the next marker, perhaps to make them leave faster.

Redcaps attacked near a fallen tree. The fight was brief and ugly. Evan prevented the first rush from reaching Nella, but he stepped too far after one retreating creature and opened a gap beside Bram. Kelan closed it. Jory suffered a cut across the arm, and Nella used more healing magic than they intended.

They did not congratulate themselves afterward.

They corrected the formation and kept moving. The deeper forest became quiet.

Fog withdrew from a wide clearing where an elder dryad stood beneath a dead oak. Bark covered most of her body. Living vines hung from her arms, but the tree behind her had blackened from root to crown. Pale flowers grew from cracks in its trunk and opened as the party approached.

The dryad looked at each of them.

”Five enter beneath my branches.” She said. ”How many will remain when the forest closes?”

Roots broke through the soil. Evan planted his feet.

The elder dryad did not fight like the redcaps. She controlled the clearing. Roots separated anyone who moved alone. Vines pulled at shields and ankles. Flowers released silver dust that made distances uncertain and turned companions into shapes in the fog.

The party’s first plan failed almost immediately.

Jory and Kelan tried to reach opposite sides of the dead oak and were driven back by twisting roots. Bram’s arrows struck the bark but did little while the pale flowers remained open. Nella shouted that the blossoms were feeding the dryad’s magic.

Evan could not protect everyone by standing in one place. He moved with them instead.

When Bram shifted right for a clear shot, Evan gave ground on the same side. When the brothers attacked the flowers near the roots, he turned his shield toward the vines gathering behind them. Nella stayed within the space he controlled and spent her magic only when an injury threatened to slow someone.

The difference was not dramatic. It was a dozen small choices that kept one mistake from becoming five.

Bram destroyed the first cluster of flowers. Jory and Kelan cut through another while arguing about which brother had done most of the work. The silver dust thinned. The dead oak became visible again.

The elder dryad drew every remaining root toward Evan. His new awareness showed him too many threats at once. One curled toward his legs. Two moved around the shield. A heavier root rose behind Nella.

He could not stop all of them.

”Left!” Evan shouted.

Kelan cut the root at Evan’s feet. Jory intercepted the one reaching around the shield. Bram’s arrow severed the vine behind Nella.

Evan held the center.

That was what the trainer meant. A Guardian did not become the entire party’s shield. He made it possible for the party to protect itself.

With the flowers gone, the elder dryad weakened. Nella used the last of her magic to keep Jory standing. Bram pinned a moving vine to the oak. The brothers struck the same opening for once, and Evan drove the edge of his shield into the cracked bark when the dryad tried to close around it.

The dead oak split.

Moonlight entered the hollow trunk. The elder dryad lowered her arms as the black wood behind her crumbled into silver dust.

Evan appeared at the end of Fey Nights beside his companions. A reward chest waited beneath the final lantern.

[Fey Nights completed.]

Nobody spoke for several seconds.

Then Jory shouted and jumped with joy.

Kelan claimed the final attack. Bram claimed neither brother would have reached the tree without his arrow. Nella sat on the chest and refused to move until everyone drank water.

Evan looked down at his shield.

It bore new scratches from the clearing. The rented shield would return to the equipment hall, but the reward chest contained a reinforced grip sized for a Guardian’s shield. Evan turned it over in his hands before placing it carefully in his pack.

In his office, Max noticed the completed run in the dungeon menu. Anna found the same result on her clipboard a moment later.

”Looks like another party clear Fey Nights for the first time.” She said.

Max opened the recording long enough to confirm all five had survived the final encounter. ”Good.”

Evan and his party carried the news out themselves, laughing and interrupting one another as they headed toward the tavern. That night, Evan began another letter home.

Elly,

Lord Limpington looks far more impressive in your drawing than he did when I bought him. I am glad he reached you safely.

I chose my class today. I am a Guardian.

He paused with the pen above the paper.

There was more he needed to say. Not all of it. Not yet. But more than he had said before.

The place where I work is unusual. Some people would call it dangerous. It is also the safest place I have ever lived.

Evan read the words twice before continuing.

I have friends here. Today the five of us went somewhere dangerous, and all five of us returned. I chose Guardian because I thought protecting people meant standing between them and everything dangerous. I am beginning to understand that it also means trusting them to stand beside me.

I will tell you more about this place soon. For now, tell Mother that I am eating properly. Tell Father I am glad the roof is fixed. And tell our brother that the town is real, even if Lord Limpington probably isn’t.

Your brother

Evan

He waited for the ink to dry before folding the letter.

Elly’s drawing remained propped beside his lamp. He took one last look at it before extinguishing the lamp and crawling his tired body into bed.
