Dungeon Master (Karma System)

Several weeks earlier, seven days after the Skyyard opened, Davin Holt completed his sentence at the work camp shortly after sunrise.

Max received the notice through his Dungeon Master menu.

[Compulsory labor completed.]

[Assigned worker: Davin Holt.]

[Assigned offense: Repeated harassment after formal warning.]

[Remaining labor: 0 hours.]

[Work-band release requires civil-authority approval.]

The sentence had never suspended the man’s access to Crag Dungeon. It had changed where he spent his time inside it. He slept in the camp bunkhouse, ate at its mess, and worked under the Orc Chief’s supervision until the band recorded the required hours.

Kicking him out would have earned Max nothing and taught even less.

The work camp produced roads, drainage, timber, and a great deal of Dungeon Points from activity that otherwise would not have existed.

Anna read the same result from her clipboard. ”He did not attempt to escape again after the first day.”

”Again?” Max asked.

”The Orc Chief reported one attempt during his second hour.”

”That did not take long.”

”The band returned him to the timber pile before he reached the edge of camp.”

Max opened a portal.

He and Anna stepped into a broad work clearing surrounded by trees and low hills. The portal placed them near the camp office rather than revealing anything beyond the immediate construction zone. Stacks of cut timber stood beside a road of packed stone. Drainage channels crossed beneath it through newly built culverts.

Orcs moved between work crews carrying tools instead of weapons. The Orc Chief stood near the road with both arms folded.

Here, the Orc Chief assigned crews, inspected work, and decided whether an excuse deserved laughter before he rejected it.

He had rejected many excuses during the past seven days. Now the Orc look disappointed.

”He is finished.” The Chief said.

The adventurer in question worked beside a stack of logs. Seven days of labor had changed his appearance more than his personality. His face and arms were darker from the artificial sunlight. Calluses covered his palms. He still looked irritated every time an Orc corrected how he held a tool.

He also corrected a new worker before the man tried lifting a timber from the wrong side.

”Wait until the others have the weight.” He ordered. ”If it twists, it will break your wrist.”

The Orc beside him grunted approval.

Max approached. The work band around the adventurer’s wrist displayed a green zero.

”Your sentence is complete.” Max said.

The man lowered the timber and wiped both hands against his brown work tunic. ”Then remove this.”

Max could have objected to the demand. Seven days in the camp had apparently improved the man’s work habits more than his manners.

He approved the release. The metal band opened and disappeared into dungeon storage. A second notice replaced it.

[Civil sentence completed.]

[Full Sanctuary privileges restored.]

[Future violations remain subject to increased penalties.]

The adventurer rubbed his wrist. Behind him, three Orcs continued positioning the timber above an unfinished culvert.

He looked toward the portal waiting near the camp office.

Then he looked back at the work.

”That support is crooked.”

The Orc Chief smiled.

”Not your concern anymore.” Max said.

The man hesitated. ”If they set the timber like that, the next heavy rain will shift the stones.”

”Then the Orcs will fix it.”

”They will have to pull half the crossing apart.”

Max waited. The adventurer looked annoyed by the silence. ”I can finish the support before I leave.”

”Your compulsory labor is over.”

”I heard you.”

”Work after this point is paid.” Max said

That surprised the man.

The Orc Chief wanted to object.

”Which is why you will pay him the same amount you would pay another laborer.” Max turned toward the adventurer. ”You can leave now or finish the crossing as a worker. Your choice.”

The man glanced at the crooked support again.

”One day.”

”One day.” Max agreed.

The Orc Chief grumbled about soft punishments but handed the man a fresh work token. The adventurer returned to the culvert and immediately began telling the Orcs how to brace it.

The token displayed a wage, a meal allowance, and an end time. It lacked every enforcement enchantment built into the vanished band. If the man decided after an hour that he had made a mistake, he could put down the tool and walk through the portal.

The Orc Chief understood the difference even while pretending not to approve of it.

”If he leaves before the support is straight, I do not pay for the full day.”

”That is how wages work.” Max said.

”Compulsory workers complain less about wages.”

”They complain more about everything else though.”

The Chief considered this and reluctantly nodded.

The adventurer returned long enough to collect a measuring line. He stopped beside Max without meeting Anna’s eyes.

”When this day ends, I can go back to the regular Sanctuary?”

”Your sentence already ended.” Max said. ”You can eat in its restaurants, rent a room, enter the dungeon levels you qualify for, and use every public attraction.”

”Even after what happened?”

”Completing a sentence has to mean something. If you repeat the offense, the next sentence will also mean something.”

The man absorbed both halves of the answer. Then he carried the line back to the culvert.

The Orc Chief watched him leave. ”If he returns in a band, I assign him to the quarry.”

”That sounds fair.”

Anna watched for several seconds. ”Do you think he changed?”

Max looked at the man arguing with an Orc over the angle of a beam. ”He changed enough to care whether something he built stays standing. We can start there.”

They returned to the Sanctuary.

That had been weeks ago, since then, Holt had returned to the camp for paid work often enough that the Orc Chief had begun saving difficult construction jobs for him.

Now, on the morning after the Grand Masquerade, the Golden Axe tavern had become Dread Fort’s unofficial map room and gathering point for adventures to plan their raids..

Matthew had established three rules for anyone adding information. A person had to mark what they had seen, what they had inferred, and what someone else had told them. Every route carried the date and the event that had ended it. Anything uncertain was written in gray rather than black.

These rules did not prevent mistakes. They made mistakes easier to find before another party built an entire plan upon one.

Matthew’s party had drawn the outer yard across three sheets of parchment. The first showed streets and structures. The second showed bells, patrols, and insignia. The third contained notes about everything that had gone wrong.

Five Knots added its exterior map beside them. Rod’s party had made its own first attempt through the western wall and contributed the location of two guard towers. They had died before reaching the inner wall, but Lana had measured the magical defenses and Dirk had identified a section of roof that patrols rarely crossed.

Nobody confused that failure with uselessness.

Max visited with Quin after leaving the work camp. He did not sit at the main table. Quin walked around it twice, reading the same contradictions the adventurers had noticed.

”This patrol is marked in two places.” Quin said.

Matthew nodded. ”It moved when the alarm began.”

”And this door?”

”Open before the alarm. Warded afterward.”

Kesh tapped a different page. ”Our patrol never used that road during the first visit.”

One of Matthew’s scouts frowned. ”Then either the schedule changes between instances or something you did redirected it.”

”We did nothing.” Orin said.

The table became quiet as the considered possibilities.

Matthew moved two transparent sheets over the base map. On the first, the western patrol turned toward Rod’s party after a detection yard flashed. On the second, that same patrol remained on the central avenue until Matthew’s stolen wagon driver was found.

The fortress had not changed between groups. The different responses were because the two groups acted differently.

Max knew the answer. Dread Fort’s physical structure reset for every party. Its inhabitants began with the same responsibilities, but they reacted to sound, damaged wards, missing personnel, visible adventurers, and dozens of other conditions.

The fortress did not rearrange itself to confuse the challengers. The challengers changed the fortress by acting inside it.

Matthew looked toward Max. ”Is every copy identical when we enter?”

”Yes.”

”Do the inhabitants react independently?”

”They react to what happens.”

”That is almost an answer.”

”I am becoming generous.”

Quin pointed toward the insignia Matthew had copied. ”If the response matters, stop thinking only about doors. Decide what response you want.”

Matthew studied the crowned skull.

”We know how the guards respond when they find an intruder.”

Tessa followed his attention. ”We do not know how Kildra responds when someone challenges his authority.”

Lord Halbin leaned back. ”Then someone should insult him.”

Orin looked pleased. ”Finally, a plan that uses my strongest skill.”

Matthew rolled up the insignia page before Orin volunteered on behalf of everyone.

”Golden Axe found the outer ward. We will test it.”

Quin followed Max outside after the meeting. Sanctuary protections prevented the discussion from becoming violent, but they could not prevent three adventurers from continuing the argument on the tavern steps.

Quin looked back through the tavern window. Matthew had placed a fresh sheet beside the others and written RESPONSE WANTED across its top.

”There is no correct route, is there?”

”Why is everybody obsessed with finding a correct route. Kill the boss, beat the level. That is all there is too it.”

Quin rolled his eyes. He had already tested the level several times before any adventure stepped foot onto level 4. He Max was understating the difficulty.

The earlier levels had allowed adventurers to improve a known solution. Dread Fort forced them to decide what kind of problem they wanted the fortress to become.
