Dungeon Master (Karma System)

Matthew’s second entry into Dread Fort began with theft.

The corpse wagon route would not surprise them this time, but that did not make it safe. The driver appeared at a different point along the road. The inspection lasted longer. The wagon was sent toward another processing hall after entering the gate.

Matthew’s party adapted.

They abandoned the wagon earlier and used the first bell sequence to cross the outer yard before the missing driver was discovered. Blank servant insignia carried them through two passages. The copied map guided them around the military quarter.

Matthew had rejected the idea of damaging a random building. Fire would attract guards, but it would not necessarily attract the one person they wanted to study. Killing another patrol would reveal more of the fortress’s military response and nothing about the authority commanding it.

They needed an insult with a name attached. Their target was not Kildra. At least not yet. They needed something that mattered to him.

The fortress’s central avenue contained statues of armored undead kneeling toward the inner keep. Black banners hung from every tower. Each showed a crowned skull surrounded by fire.

The symbol appeared wherever the fortress’s authority became visible. Clerks pressed it into wax. Officers wore it above their rank. Laborers stepped aside when a sealed order carrying it crossed the road. Even the chapel doors faced the inner keep rather than the rising sun.

Matthew did not know what Kildra had ruled before becoming one of Max’s eternal souls. Inside Dread Fort, the undead acted as though the answer was everything.

Matthew selected the largest banner that could still be carried by one person.

It hung above a stone platform where undead officers received orders from the inner ward. The tracker climbed the rear wall while the others created a small disturbance near the servant entrance. The banner came down without an alarm.

Stealing it was easy.

Deciding what to do with it caused the argument.

”Burn it.” The mage suggested.

”That might destroy the evidence before Kildra notices.” Said the healer.

The shield-bearer examined the crowned skull. ”Hang it upside down.”

Matthew looked toward the inner keep. ”We do both.”

They carried the banner into the central avenue, turned it upside down, and suspended it from the kneeling statue closest to Kildra’s gate. The mage placed a small flame against the bottom edge.

Then Matthew struck the stone platform three times with the butt of his spear.

”Kildra!”

The name crossed the ward. Undead laborers stopped moving.

”Warden of the Last Threshold! Golden Axe has entered your fortress, stole your standard, and dishonored your Keep. Come reclaim it yourself.”

The mage looked at him. ”You could have mentioned us less specifically.”

The normal bells stopped. One deep note sounded from the throne tower.

It rolled across the roofs slowly enough for Matthew to feel the vibration through his boots. The patrols did not charge. Workers did not scatter. Instead, every figure in the outer yard moved into a deliberate position facing the central avenue.

The response looked less like an alarm than the beginning of a ceremony.

Max watched from his office with Anna and Quin. The view showed Matthew’s party standing beneath the burning banner while every undead in the avenue stared at them.

Inside Dread Fort, the gates separating the outer yard from the inner keep opened.

No army emerged. A single undead herald walked through.

Its armor was decorative rather than practical. A black iron mask covered its face, and it carried no visible weapon. The creature stopped at the far end of the avenue.

”Petitioners.” It announced. ”You have requested the attention of the Warden.”

The word made Matthew glance at his companions. They had issued a challenge, not submitted a request, but the herald had translated their insult into the language of Kildra’s court.

That distinction seemed important. The tracker quietly repeated it so nobody would forget.

Matthew held his spear ready. ”We requested Kildra.”

Black fire ignited across the upper balcony. Kildra stepped through it.

He wore the same heavy armor Max had seen in the conference room during the Dungeon Battle, but here a dark cloak hung from his shoulders and a narrow crown rested within the fire surrounding his skull. He stood above the open gate, looking down at the five adventurers.

[Kildra, Warden of the Last Threshold]

[Health: Unavailable]

Matthew’s mage tried to examine him again.

[Health: Unavailable]

The title remained visible when every useful measurement failed. It did not identify Kildra’s level, resistances, or abilities. It told the adventurers only the role he claimed and the place they had not yet earned the right to cross.

Matthew had considered the words dramatic when he first read them on the hill.

They felt more literal beneath Kildra’s shadow.

Kildra’s voice did not need to be loud. ”You entered beneath corpses, crept through servants’ halls, and stole cloth from an empty platform. Which deed persuaded you that you had passed my guards?”

Matthew glanced toward the surrounding buildings.

Figures had appeared in every doorway. Black-armored knights stood along the rooftops. The blank servant insignia hanging from his party’s necks had begun to glow.

”We reached the inner gate.” Matthew said.

”You reached the place where I chose to answer.”

Kildra did not sound angry about the banner. Anger would have made the plan feel more successful. He sounded as though Matthew had submitted an inadequate report and expected praise for finding the correct office.

The burning banner fell from the statue. Black flame consumed it before it touched the ground. Matthew had wanted a response. He had received one more complete than expected.

”Will you leave your walls and fight us?” he asked.

Kildra tilted his burning skull.

”You stand within my walls.”

The gates behind Matthew’s party closed.

The glowing servant insignia released columns of pale light the stretched high into the sky and marked all five adventurers. Every undead in the outer yard now knew exactly where they were.

The tracker tore his disc away and threw it aside. The light remained around him.

Matthew raised his spear. There was no path back to the corpse wagon and no reason to search for one.

”Learn everything you can.” He ordered.

The tracker stopped searching for an escape and studied the gate instead. Two towers covered its approach. A raised bridge connected the northern tower to a wall above the inner court. Servants carrying black boxes moved through a smaller door even while the main gate remained open.

The healer watched Kildra. Black fire extended from his balcony into thin strands that touched the nearest undead. Whenever one strand connected, the creature’s posture changed and green light brightened inside its armor.

The mage cast three examination spells instead of an attack. The first returned no health value. The second identified Kildra’s crown as part of the fortress rather than a removable item. The third failed so completely that her interface displayed only a black square.

They shared every result aloud.

The undead advanced.

The party did not waste its final minutes attempting to flee. The mage tested the black fire surrounding the inner gate and discovered that ordinary water did nothing to it. The healer observed that Kildra’s presence strengthened nearby undead. The tracker counted three routes between the outer yard and the balcony.

Matthew charged the herald to see how the fortress protected one of Kildra’s officials.

The answer arrived immediately. Two black knights stepped between them without crossing the intervening space. One caught Matthew’s spear. The other struck him hard enough to throw him back across the avenue.

Kildra remained on the balcony. He did not need to enter the fight personally.

The shield-bearer lasted longest. His defense held while his companions shouted observations, but every nearby undead fought faster beneath Kildra’s black fire. When the shield finally broke, the party disappeared one member at a time.

Matthew died looking at the open balcony rather than the soldiers surrounding him.

[Party defeated.]

The hospital returned all five Golden Axe members to adjoining beds.

A hospital attendant had placed slates beside them after Matthew’s first defeat. She now kept charcoal on the same shelf. By the time his vision stopped spinning, the tracker was already drawing the bridge above the inner gate.

Matthew sat upright.

”The insignia marks intruders after a fortress-wide alert.”

The mage raised one hand from the next bed. ”Kildra’s fire is not ordinary fire.”

”The inner gate opened when he answered.” Said the tracker.

The shield-bearer stared at the ceiling. ”He knew how we entered.”

The healer turned toward Matthew. ”Did we insult him, or did he simply let us believe we did?”

Matthew considered Kildra’s final words. ”Both.”

”He called us petitioners.” The tracker said.

The mage lowered her slate. ”We were shouting threats.”

”Maybe threats are petitions when you deliver them to someone powerful enough.”

Matthew added the word beneath his sketch of the herald. The party had wanted to learn whether Kildra could be drawn from his throne. They had learned that he could project his authority into the outer yard without leaving the inner keep at all.

They had also learned that he listened. That result was more useful than provoking another boss into a charge.

In Dread Fort’s empty instance, the burning banner restored itself above the command platform. The bells returned to their ordinary pattern. Kildra turned from the balcony and walked back toward his throne as everything began to reset. The courtiers bowed as he crossed between them, and the doors closed behind his cloak.

The title Max had given him was not ceremonial. Kildra guarded the final threshold in the only way an undead ruler respected: by refusing to lower it for anyone who merely arrived.
