Dungeon Master (Karma System)

Lucien Valewick arrived at the Academy of Magic annex that had been built inside the dungeon with three carriages, eight guards, two tutors, a valet, and enough luggage to occupy an entire dormitory floor.

The other students gathered at the windows to watch the servants unload it.

Lucien stepped out of the second carriage wearing a dark blue traveling coat with silver embroidery. He was sixteen, pale from spending more time in libraries than sunlight, and careful about where he placed his polished shoes. A ducal crest decorated the carriage door behind him.

Someone near the window whispered. ”That is the Duchess of Valewick’s son.”

Another student sighed. ”He will last a week.”

Lucien heard both comments when he entered the hall.

He stopped before the students, bowed, and said. ”Would someone please tell me where new arrivals register? My tutors have explained it three times, but they disagree with each other.”

The students looked at one another.

Lana stepped away from the window. ”I can show you.”

”Thank you.” Lucien glanced toward the mountain of luggage. ”Do the dormitory rooms have space for all of that?”

”No.”

He turned to his valet. ”Please send everything back except the books and ordinary clothing.”

The valet stared at him. ”Young master, your mother selected those furnishings herself.”

”Then please tell her the room was already furnished.”

”Her Grace will not be pleased.”

Lucien took a slow breath. ”I know. Please tell her anyway.”

Lana waited until they were out of the servants’ hearing before asking, ”Have you ever carried your own books?”

”Not all of them at once.”

”You are going to learn several things here.”

”That is why I came.” He said with a genuine smile on his face.

Master Halvern did not alter the entrance assessment because a Duchess was watching.

Lucien stood inside the practice circle while his mother, Duchess Elara Valewick, observed from a raised gallery. The Academy’s senior instructors occupied the seats beside her. Two family mages stood behind her chair.

”Create a flame.” Halvern instructed.

Lucien lifted one hand. A white spark formed above his palm and expanded into a steady sphere.

”Make it larger.”

The sphere doubled in size.

”Extinguish it.”

Lucien closed his hand. The flame vanished without smoke.

Several instructors made notes. The spell was clean, stable, and more advanced than most first-year students could manage.

Halvern pointed toward a row of stone targets. ”Strike the third target with a mana bolt.”

Lucien’s bolt hit the second. He frowned and tried again without permission.

The second attempt struck the edge of the third target. The third hit the center, but the spell contained too much power and cracked the stone.

”Enough.” Halvern said.

Lucien lowered his hand immediately.

”Your control is inconsistent. You compensate for poor accuracy by increasing output. Your casting posture becomes unstable whenever you are frustrated, and your mana recovery is slower than your tutors reported.”

The family mages stiffened.

Lucien only asked, ”Can those things be fixed?”

”With some effort it shouldn’t be too challenging.”

Lucien looked toward his mother. The duchess’s expression revealed nothing.

He turned back to Halvern. ”Good.”

The first lesson began before sunrise.

Lucien arrived ten minutes early. He wore a plain Academy uniform and carried his own training staff. A servant had followed him from the dormitory, but Lucien dismissed the man at the entrance.

The class trainer waited inside a stone courtyard on the Academy’s leased land. It appeared human until the lesson started. Then it moved with the mechanical precision of something created for one purpose.

[Basic Mana Shaping]

[Exercise One: Maintain five equal lights for ten minutes.]

Lucien created five lights.

One was brighter than the others.

The trainer struck his wrist with a padded rod.

”Uneven.”

Lucien corrected it.

Another light dimmed.

The rod struck him again.

By the end of the first hour, his hand was red and his five lights had remained equal for only six minutes.

Several students completed the exercise and moved to the next courtyard. Lucien stayed.

Lana returned after finishing her own lesson and found him sitting on the ground with his eyes closed.

Five lights floated above his head.

They flickered, steadied, and then flickered again.

”The lesson ended.” she said.

”The courtyard remains open until noon.”

”You have theory class.”

”In twenty-three minutes.”

His left hand trembled. He placed it against his knee and kept the spell active.

Lana sat on the low wall. ”Everyone assumed you were sent here because your parents wanted you out of their house.”

”My mother wanted me taught at home.”

”Then why are you here?”

One of the lights dimmed. Lucien restored it.

”I want to become one of the strongest mages alive.”

Lana expected embarrassment after such a childish statement. Lucien sounded as if he were explaining the weather.

”That is a large ambition.”

”Small ambitions have never made much sense to me.”

”Do you know how many mages want the same thing?”

”Yes.” His eyes remained closed. ”That is why I cannot afford to waste twenty-three minutes.”

The five lights became equal.

The system began counting.

Lucien’s first dungeon death occurred on his sixth day.

He entered Fey Nights with three other students under an instructor’s supervision. The instructor was present to observe, not to rescue them. Everyone had agreed to that before the attempt.

A fey hound appeared behind Lucien during the second encounter.

He sensed it, turned too quickly, and used more force than the situation required. The spell missed the creature and struck a tree. The fey hound reached him before he recovered.

Lucien awoke in the Sanctuary hospital shouting the second half of a spell.

A nurse pushed his hand away from the nearby water pitcher he almost cast a spell at.

”No casting in the recovery room.”

He stopped, stared at the ceiling, and remembered dying. The duchess arrived twenty minutes later.

Every guard in the corridor stepped aside. She entered Lucien’s room with Halvern behind her and closed the door.

”You died,” she said.

”Yes, Mother.”

”A creature bit through your neck.”

Lucien touched the unmarked skin beneath his jaw. His memory flashed to the moment when the dog bit him. ”Yes.”

”You will return home.”

He sat up. His face had lost its color, but his voice remained steady.

”No.”

The duchess went still.

Lucien had never told her no in his life.

”I failed because I abandoned the exercise Master Halvern has been correcting all week,” he continued. ”I panicked, used too much mana, and left myself open. If I go home, my tutors will praise the power of the missed spell. Here, I can learn not to miss.”

”You could die again.”

”I expect I will.”

”That does not frighten you?”

Lucien looked down at his hands. ”It terrifies me. But I still want to stay.”

The duchess studied her son for a long time. Then she looked at Halvern. ”Show me everything the Academy is building here.”

Max joined the tour beside the of Academy annex.

It consisted of two classrooms, three practice courtyards, a storage building, and rented rooms in the Sanctuary’s existing mage tower. Students moved between them while class trainers demonstrated spells that would have required a dozen specialized instructors anywhere else.

Halvern explained the arrangement while the duchess watched Lucien repeat the same defensive spell against a trainer.

”The class trainers can teach every documented spell, skill, and ability available at their assigned level.” Halvern said. ”The Academy provides theory, safety standards, historical context, and personal guidance. The Sanctuary provides practice that can be measured.”

Lucien’s barrier broke. He created another before the trainer struck again.

The duchess asked Max. ”How long is the lease on this land?”

”The current agreement covers the annex for five years.”

”And the tower?”

”The Academy does not own a tower here. Some instructors and students rent rooms in the one that already exists.”

Halvern glanced at her. He understood the question before Max did.

The duchess continued. ”My son has received six days of instruction here. In those six days, he has been criticized more honestly than in the previous six years.”

”He makes criticism easy.” Halvern said.

Max did his best to stifle the laugh that bubbled up inside him.

”I intend to fund his education.” The Duchess said. ”Properly. If the Academy acquires a longer lease and constructs its own tower, House Valewick will provide seventy thousand gold toward the project.”

Halvern stopped walking. Max checked that he had heard correctly. The amount could build more than a tower.

”There would be conditions.” The Duchess added. ”A permanent scholarship fund. Rooms for visiting scholars. House Valewick receives no authority over admissions or instruction but the tower must carry our name.”

Halvern recovered first. ”You do not want a seat on the governing council?”

”No. I have seen what happens when wealthy families manage schools.”

She turned toward the courtyard. Lucien’s barrier lasted three seconds longer than the previous one. He smiled as it shattered.

The Academy council approved the project before sunset.

Their own funds, several smaller pledges, and the Valewick donation produced a construction budget large enough for a seven-story tower, attached classrooms, dormitories, and protected laboratories. Max extended the land lease and marked a site beyond the current annex, safely separated from the Sanctuary’s existing mage tower.

Anna examined the plans that had been submitted while sitting beside him.

Across the courtyard, Lucien attempted the five-light exercise again.

All five remained equal for ten minutes.

[Basic Mana Shaping improved.]

He dismissed the lights, flexed his aching hand, and began the exercise again.
