Dungeon Master (Karma System)

Mira’s new body formed on one of the hospital beds.

Pale light gathered above the mattress and slowly took the shape of a person. Her skin appeared first, followed by the blue dress she had been wearing when she died. The gray lines of the curse remained beneath her wrists, but the marks that had spread across her face were gone.

Garrick stood beside the bed without breathing, waiting.

Mira’s eyes opened. She inhaled sharply and sat up. Her grandfather wrapped both arms around her before she could speak. Mira made a surprised sound, then hugged him back.

Max checked her information.

[Mira Vale]

[Condition: Wasting Curse]

[Physical state: Stable]

[Sanctuary Resurrection Protection: Active]

The curse had not disappeared. Its progress through her new body had returned to an earlier stage, exactly as the Dungeon Core promised.

Max checked the resurrection record a second time. There were no hidden costs, missing fragments, or warnings unique to Mira’s condition. She had returned as the same living girl who entered the dungeon. Her memories, classless status, and personal system information were unchanged.

That mattered. Garrick had asked Max to preserve his granddaughter, and the Dungeon Core had done exactly what its resurrection system was designed to do.

”How do you feel?” Anna asked.

Mira looked over her grandfather’s shoulder. ”Hungry.”

Garrick laughed and cried at the same time.

”Do you remember what happened?” Max asked.

”I went to sleep. My chest hurt, and then it stopped hurting.” Mira looked around the hospital. ”Was that all?”

”You died.” Garrick said, tightening his hold on her.

”I noticed when I woke up somewhere else.”

”You were dead for eleven minutes.” Max said.

Mira considered that. ”It felt shorter.”

One of the hospital gnomes approached with a tray of water and food. Garrick attempted to make Mira drink slowly. She ignored him and ate half a piece of bread in two bites.

”Careful.” he said.

”I have a new stomach.”

”You have a restored stomach.” Her grandfather answered.

”Then it should already know how bread works.”

Anna covered a laugh with one hand.

The hospital gnome examined Mira. Her heartbeat was stronger than it had been when she entered the dungeon. She no longer struggled to fill her lungs, and the constant pain in her joints was gone.

The curse remained. Thin gray lines would gradually spread again, weakening her until another resurrection became necessary. Nobody knew whether that would take days, months, or longer.

For the moment, Mira felt better than she had in years.

”Can I leave the hospital?” she asked.

Garrick immediately shook his head.

”After the gnomes finish examining you.” Max said.

The old man looked at him.

”The resurrection worked. Keeping her in bed will not stop the curse from returning.”

Garrick knew that was true. Accepting it was more difficult. Mira remained in the hospital until morning. Max returned after breakfast and found her walking up and down the hall while Anna followed beside her.

”My legs do not hurt.” Mira announced.

”That does not mean you should spend the entire day walking.” Garrick said from a nearby chair.

”I spent yesterday walking while they did hurt.”

”And you died that night.”

Mira stopped. The words silenced everyone.

Garrick’s face twisted with regret. ”I did not mean—”

”It is true. But I would have died soon anyway. Yesterday was the best day I have had in years.” She returned to the chair beside him and took his hand. ”I am not going to pretend dying is nothing, I do not want to do it every day. But I am also not going back to spending every day preparing for it.”

Garrick lowered his head. Max gave them several minutes alone. He and Anna walked to the far end of the hospital corridor.

”Do you think he will accept it?” Max asked.

”He brought her here because he wanted her to live,” Anna replied. ”He did not understand that living would mean allowing her to take risks again.”

”Walking through a village and eating fried dough should not qualify as taking risks.”

”For Mira, they did.”

Anna had spent her past life serving a church. She had watched families pray for miracles and then struggle when salvation arrived in a form they had not expected. She did not judge Garrick for being afraid. Neither did Max. The old man had kept Mira alive long enough to reach the dungeon. It would take more than one resurrection for him to stop expecting every cough to be her last.

Mira was released from the hospital before noon. Her first request was to return to the Skyyard.

”You just died.” Garrick said.

”And now I feel better.”

”A flight can wait one day,” Anna said before they began arguing. ”Captain Brakka is busy preparing for the first qualifying race anyway.”

Mira accepted the delay when Anna promised to take a demonstration flight with her after the race.

”Can Max come?” Mira asked.

”He can,” Anna said.

”Do not let him pilot.” Quin added from the hospital entrance.

Max turned toward him. ”Why are you here?”

”The civil office sent its first appeal.”

”Already?”

”Two members of the same party registered contradictory agreements about who controls their Skyyard qualification if the group separates.”

”They have not even raced yet. And besides, they qualify as a team, not individuals.”

”They are preparing for success.”

Max looked at Mira. ”This is what happens when people refuse to enjoy anything simply.”

”What are you going to do?” She asked.

”Tell them that the five people who win are the five people who qualify. If the party separates, none of them can use the qualification without the others.”

Quin handed him the written appeal. ”That is what the mediators decided.”

”Then why did they send it to me?”

”The party appealed.”

Max wrote Denied across the bottom and handed it back.

”Your first act as mayor today.” Quin said.

”Keep calling me that and I will assign you to Orc camp.”

”On what charge?”

Max glanced at Anna. ”Add irritating the Dungeon Master to the dungeon rules.”

”Request denied.” she replied.

Mira laughed.

The exchange seemed to help Garrick. His shoulders relaxed, and he allowed Anna to take Mira to the library without following them down the hall. He remained in the hospital to ask the gnomes several more questions about the resurrection process.

Max and Quin returned to the civil office.

The gnomes had resolved seven complaints since the previous afternoon. Three involved personal property. Two involved people claiming to represent the Skyyard. One concerned a noisy group practicing airship commands in the hallway of an inn throughout the night.

The final complaint had resulted in two days of labor at the Orc camp after an adventurer attempted to sell counterfeit Skyyard registrations.

”The Orc Chief says the man moved enough stone to finish a drainage channel.” Anna reported when she joined them later.

Max nodded approvingly. ”Justice has been served.”

”He also wants to know whether he can make the workers sing while they carry things.”

”Only if the workers choose the song.”

The system was imperfect, but it allowed the Sanctuary to solve ordinary problems without requiring Max to listen to every argument personally. He remained the final authority while the gnomes and mediators handled everything that did not need him.

That was close enough to being mayor for Max.

Mira and Garrick settled into a permanent home. Garrick used part of his savings to lease a small cottage near the hospital. He spent the mornings repairing furniture for neighbors.

Mira divided her time between the library and Anna’s office. Anna did not give her any official responsibilities, but she allowed Mira to sit nearby, ask questions, and help sort harmless messages when she became bored.

The girl remembered every name she heard. By the end of the week, she knew which gnome managed the hospital, which baker sold the sweet rolls Anna preferred, and which public portal reached the lake.

She also learned how to contact Max without going through her grandfather.

[When is my Skyyard flight?]

Max received the message while reviewing the first qualifying race preparations.

[Tomorrow morning] He replied.

[Anna said today.]

Max looked across the desk at his wife.

Anna smiled. ”I told her we could go if she felt well.”

[Meet us at the tower in one hour,] Max sent.

The demonstration ship carried Mira, Garrick, Max, Anna, and Captain Brakka. Brakka controlled the vessel while a collection of enchanted mechanisms managed the other stations. The ship moved slowly around the Sanctuary without using the racing course.

Mira stood at the front railing with the wind pulling at her hair. Garrick remained close but did not hold her.

From above, the village looked small. The surrounding forests, hills, lake, training grounds, and Undercity entrances spread around it. The distant edge of the Sanctuary remained visible in every direction.

”It is beautiful.” Mira said.

”It is.” Garrick agreed.

His smile remained until she turned away.

Max saw the old man’s attention settle on the boundary beyond the lake. Garrick studied it for several seconds before looking back at his granddaughter.

He did not complain. He did not ask Max for more. He had received the miracle he requested, and he would not diminish Mira’s happiness by describing that miracle as a prison.

Max understood anyway.

He considered offering empty reassurance and decided against it. The Sanctuary was large enough to contain a village, a lake, forests, training grounds, and thousands of possible experiences. It was still bounded territory. Garrick could see where it ended from the deck beneath his feet.

Max had saved Mira from permanent death. He had not restored the life she would have possessed without the curse. Pretending those were the same gift would only insult the old man.

Mira saw a life she had never expected to possess.

Garrick saw the boundaries of the only place where she could safely live that life.
