A Foodie Transmigrated into the Palace

Chapter 1559

There should be no secrets between a husband and wife.

Xia Jingfeng almost didn’t think about it and told the truth as it was.

Tang Xun felt completely unwell after hearing it and exclaimed in shock.

”How... how could this happen?”

Xia Jingfeng shook his head.

”Does Second Mother know?” Tang Xun asked again.

Xia Jingfeng shook his head again.

”It seems she doesn’t know.”

Second Mother is kind-hearted and soft-hearted. Even when the situation was so unfavorable to her, she never stopped helping him.

If she knew Father suffered like this, she would never pretend not to know.

Seeing Second Mother’s cheerful and carefree demeanor earlier, he guessed she must not know.

Tang Xun felt a bit unstable, thought for a while, and said.

”Indeed!”

”Just now, Second Mother told me she and Father don’t see each other much anymore!”

One is in the front yard, the other in the back yard.

Though separated by a short wall, it’s like separated by mountains and seas; not meeting is quite normal.

”What shall we do now?”

Seeing her husband’s heavy, repressed expression, she involuntarily began to feel panic inside.

Since knowing him, she had never seen him like this.

She thought this time, it really touched his reverse scale and bottom line.

Sure enough, as soon as she finished speaking, she saw Xia Jingfeng squint his eyes, a cold expression swept across his face.

”What to do?”

”Hmph!”

Though he didn’t utter a solution, his tone was chilling to the bone.

Tang Xun gently pulled his hand to comfort him quietly.

”Don’t be too angry, take care of yourself. I’ll find a doctor to check on Father first!”

”Mm!”

Xia Jingfeng’s stern expression softened with her mention of ’Father.’

He held her hand, intending to say something.

Tang Xun smiled.

”No need to say anything, it’s what I should do!”

The Great Chu Dynasty ruled the world with benevolence, filial piety, and etiquette. As the legitimate wife of the Xia Family, regardless of what her husband’s father had done, it was ultimately in the past.

Now that there’s reconciliation, she naturally must follow in respecting and being filial, not daring to slack off in the slightest.

Watching her walking away.

Xia Jingfeng sighed, feeling his heart warm a bit.

Fortunately, luckily he has Tang Xun by his side, so gentle and kind, so knowledgeable and polite, so understanding.

If without her, how would he endure times like this?

...

Tang Xun’s subordinates were very effective.

Within half a Shi Chen, they invited the best doctor in the county into the mansion.

In front of the dim bed curtain, the doctor carefully checked the pulse.

Xia Jingfeng got up and looked around.

This courtyard was extremely desirable to him as a child, here was his father, snacks, and books to read, young he longed for it immensely.

But since Lady Yao entered the mansion, the good days for their siblings ended.

Especially after the third brother and sister were born, he never entered this courtyard again.

He could never have imagined returning here in such a role, in such a situation one day.

And the place has long become dilapidated, those books slightly rotten, covered with thick dust on the shelves, the curtains torn, the room pillars eaten by insects.

Even the corners gathered thick cobwebs, the whole room was filled with the smell of mildew and decay.

Meanwhile, Father is critically ill, enduring all inherent suffering.

And he, heartless and unfilial, lamenting the past.

Now, he has no other thoughts, just hoping Father’s health isn’t so dire, leaving him time for filial duty.

After a lengthy diagnosis, the doctor packed up the medicine and stood up.

Xia Jingfeng eagerly stepped forward to ask.

”How is my father? Are the injuries on his body critical?”

That doctor hesitated for a moment, then slightly shook his head.

”Sir, don’t rush, let’s talk outside!”

Upon hearing this, Xia Jingfeng’s heart sank abruptly.

Everyone knows, generally when a doctor says this, it indicates the patient’s condition is very bad.

With a mix of apprehension, he went outside, eager to ask again.

”Can you speak now, how is my father’s current health?”

”Ugh!”

The doctor sighed first, then continued to shake his head.

”Sir, please forgive me, the old gentleman is not suffering from a single illness; his eyes are clouded indicating severe eye disease, tongue fur green, cheeks sunken, indicating he’s been underfed for long, also with many injuries, some even festering, and slightly dazed, indicating he’s often been beaten, frightened...”

The doctor spoke a lot, taking a full quarter of an hour before stopping.

Xia Jingfeng was stupefied, already at a loss for words.

After a while, he responded, mumbling.

”Then... is there any chance of saving him now?”

The doctor pondered for a moment, hesitated.

”That’s hard to say, only...”

”Don’t worry about the silver, whatever top-quality medication needed just say it, I’ll surely find a way to obtain it!” His emotions highly agitated, reason cast beyond the skies.

The doctor faintly shook his head saying.

”Sir, enlighten me, this isn’t about silver, rather...”

”The old gentleman’s body is excessively weak, ordinary medicines have no effect, and potent ones I fear he cannot withstand, it’s really difficult to balance!”

”I beg for your forgiveness, sir, for my inadequate medical skills!”

He was aware of the person’s identity before him, as a commoner doctor, dare not offend lightly.

Xia Jingfeng, however, didn’t care, his nervous hands clenched and unclenched, sweat pouring from his head.

After a while, he asked again.

”Then now, is it still possible to call for the Imperial Physician from the Capital City?”

The doctor slightly shook his head.

”Afraid it’s too late, the old gentleman’s health is already at its final stage; if delayed another half month, surely it’s to the point of exhausted oil and extinguished lamp, I beg sir to mourn!”

Those last two words ’mourn’ resounded like thunder over Xia Jingfeng’s head, only feeling the brain explode loudly, hearing nothing more.

Uncertain how long passed, Tang Xun called by his ear gradually bringing him back to awareness.

”Husband, please don’t frighten me, take a sip of hot tea!”

She presented a cup of hot tea, feeding it to him little by little with a small silver spoon.

Xia Jingfeng’s eyes finally became clear, instantly red-rimmed eyes with one hand holding Tang Xun and covering his chest, unable to utter a word.

”Husband!”

”Don’t say anything, I know, I already know!”

Xia Jingfeng’s emotions gradually calmed, yet the wound in his heart like a venomous serpent fiercely tearing gnawing at his soul, seemingly relentless until torn apart.

...

The news spread quickly.

Soon Lady Wen received the message.

She hurriedly arrived from the back yard, seeing Old Master Xia lying withered on the bed, and Xia Jingfeng looking heartbroken, she felt deeply guilty.

”It’s all my fault for not noticing Master’s illness in time!”

”Jingfeng, you...”

”How’s your father now?”

Xia Jingfeng, with red eyes, finally spoke after some time.

”The doctor said, Father’s body has reached the point of exhausted oil and extinguished lamp; if forcefully treated, would only add to the suffering!”

Lady Wen was speechless, merely holding a handkerchief while crying.
