Chapter 964: Chapter 2914:

Chapter 2914

Now, the scene reflected in the mirror indeed had few personal guards stationed, yet, it was so unusually quiet around, as if the chaos of warfare had never even occurred…

This eerie silence in the currently tense and alert Royal City Imperial Palace was clearly unreasonable…

“Is something wrong with my mother?” Looking at such a peaceful corridor, Yushu couldn’t help but speak…

As a daughter, Yushu naturally hoped nothing had happened to her mother. Of course, she also didn’t want what Gu Changsheng said to be true…

Because if what Gu Changsheng said was true, it would mean that she had been abandoned by her own mother…

Every time she thought of this, Yushu felt deeply heartbroken…

Because she had always thought her mother loved her very much…

“Don’t worry, your mother is fine…” Gu Changsheng heard this, knowing that Yushu still clung to the last thread of hope in her heart, smiled gently and said slowly…

“…” Yushu went silent again upon hearing this…

To be honest, she was somewhat afraid of Gu Changsheng because, just like Baby and Beibei said, everything Gu Changsheng said always turned out to be true, as if destined to become reality…

And Yushu did not want to face such a reality!

Because such a reality was too cruel…

The scenes in the mirror continued to advance, moving along the corridor…

Yushu knew that upon seeing this scene, Hai Mo, walking within the scene, would soon reach her mother’s bedchamber…

The appearance of her mother’s bedchamber was a place all too familiar to Yushu…

Soon, the mirror revealed the images of two guards at the gate, but upon seeing Hai Mo, they merely glanced and said nothing, directly letting Hai Mo in…

At this moment, it seemed as if Hai Mo lowered his head…

Because a tray carried by someone appeared in the mirror, on the tray were glass cups and a pot of crystal-clear wine…

Standing before the mirror, Yushu’s gaze couldn’t help but darken slightly…

That wine…

Was exactly the kind her mother loved to drink…

Though her mother spent her days bedridden, she lived quite elegantly, enjoying a cup of wine in the afternoon, sitting on the balcony of her bedchamber, watching the seaweed and sea flowers bloom…

Hai Mo entered the bedchamber without alerting the chamber’s master…

At this moment, the master of the bedchamber, Queen Yulan of the Mermaid People, was seated in a lounge chair on the balcony, with an elderly elder of the Mermaid People standing beside her…

That elder of the Mermaid People, Yushu also recognized, was none other than the Great Elder Yusa of the Mermaid People…

As the Great Elder of the Mermaid People, whether by age or status, Yusa commanded respect, held in high esteem throughout the entire Mermaid People, and Yushu, when young, loved to follow behind Great Elder Yusa, tugging at his clothes…

At this moment, seeing the figure of Yusa in her mother’s bedchamber caught Yushu off guard…

In Yushu’s understanding, her sister Yuhong had concocted plots against her, all for the royal power. Fearing the unraveling of her schemes, she would definitely control her mother, but unexpectedly, her mother remained free to this day…

“Your Majesty, you’ve transferred most of the personal guards and soldiers from around the bedchamber. Isn’t this unwise? What if Yuhong suddenly rebels…”

And at this moment, the voice of Yusa echoed from the mirror, clearly showing Yusa’s disapproval of Queen Yulan’s approach…

“Suddenly rebel? No! She won’t dare! As long as I am, in her mind, still the bed-ridden queen, as long as I remain seemingly harmless and ineffectual, she won’t turn on me suddenly, because she’s counting on me to lawfully support her ascent to the throne of Mermaid Queen!” Yulan, seated on the lounge chair, shook her head at these words, leaving the question unaddressed, “On the contrary, having heavy defenses outside my door would make her feel threatened…”

“People only keep watch over those they perceive as dangerous, don’t they?”

Finishing this, Yulan turned her head to glance at the Great Elder Yusa…

That’s right!

This point, even Yusa has to admit, his Queen is correct…

It’s just…

“Your Majesty, can things really remain at a stalemate like this? You’re pretending to be ill, using an excuse of not knowing the location of the Jade Seal, refusing to order the Royal Army to attack East County. This can delay things for a while, but it cannot be postponed indefinitely. Skates are not a patient sort; she may not be able to endure much longer…” Yusa sighed and then said, “Your Majesty, do things really have to develop in this way? To the point of being irreparable?”

“The situation was destined to be beyond redemption from the very beginning, wasn’t it?” Queen Yulan lowered her gaze, slowly saying, “Yusa, perhaps Skates’ sudden move surprised you, but you cannot deny that she has never been a kind-hearted child. She was born with a taste for bloodshed, although she hides it well. As her mother, how could I not know?”

Yusa heard this and kept silent.

“As the Queen of the Mermaid People, even I have to admit my failure in this regard. I have only two daughters, yet neither is suitable to inherit the throne as Queen of the Mermaid People. This is my oversight…” Queen Yulan sighed and continued, “My eldest daughter Skates is bloodthirsty, murderous, and will never become a qualified queen. My second daughter Yushu is protected too well by me, becoming overly simple and kind. You know, the throne has no tolerance for such simplicity and kindness, thus Yushu is not a suitable successor either…”

“Both sisters are unqualified. Unless Skates is willing to put down the knife, unless Yushu is willing to grow up, otherwise my Mermaid People are destined to be leaderless, and my Fish Clan are doomed to decline…”

“Your Majesty, even if neither princess is a qualified heir to the throne, if the situation remains deadlocked, one of the palace masters will inevitably suffer a loss, which is a huge loss for our Royal Family…” Yusa said, unable to resist speaking, even knowing Yulan’s words were true.

“Loss? So what? I am a mother, but I am also the Queen of the Mermaid People, the King of the Royal Family! I bear the future of the Mermaid People and the rise and fall of the Fish Clan, so I have no choice!” Queen Yulan stood, looking at Yusa, saying solemnly, “My daughters, through this ordeal, are destined for only one to survive. And the one who lives in the end, no matter who it is, will be the future king of the Mermaid People, my only choice as forced upon me!”

“Your Majesty, in fact, you can take action, as long as you do, the Eldest Princess will have no chance to continue, and the Second Princess might still have a glimmer of hope…” Yusa spoke up, unable to suppress his words.

In truth, both Skates and Yushu were watched growing up by Yusa, and he didn’t want anything bad to happen to either princess…

But…

Now it seems, it’s impossible!

“Have I not already taken action? I obstructed Skates’ aggressive assault on East County, and I gave Yushu a chance to realize the harshness of reality. If Skates cannot understand my delay was intentional, if Yushu cannot realize it was my prevention that allowed her to breathe in East County, then what qualifications do they have to become the future queen of the Mermaid People?” Queen Yulan said, taking a cup from Hai Mo’s tray, pouring wine and slowly bringing it to her lips…

“…Sigh…Perhaps Your Majesty is right…” Yusa sighed, ultimately saying nothing more, only replying…

Then…

The image in the mirror suddenly disappeared…

Gu Changsheng turned her head, looking at Yushu who stood aside, witnessing all that happened…

“No! No! Impossible! This can’t be true! You’re lying to me; you must be lying to me. This is all the illusion you’ve created, yes, an illusion! How could my mother bet with both me and Skates? How is it possible? She loves us! She truly loves us!” Yushu was utterly shocked by the scene she saw and the words she heard…

Her mother was indeed not as weak as Gu Changsheng had said…

The reality was even more cruel than what Gu Changsheng had described, many times crueler!

Her mother had already foreseen that, in the end, only one between her and Skates would survive—just waiting to see who would be that smart survivor…

“You need not be so heartbroken. Your mother said one thing correctly: she is not only your mother but also the queen of the Mermaid People, the king of the Fish Clan. Bearing the rise and fall of both clans is a burden she cannot escape as a queen. A mother may selfishly love only her children, but a queen cannot!” Gu Changsheng looked at Yushu’s madness, knowing she might find it difficult to accept such facts for a time. But realistically, she had to accept it, and quickly…

Because time waits for no one!

Amid this chaos within the Mermaid People, someone must step up quickly to handle it, otherwise, it will just create greater chaos…

“Why? Why is it this way? Why is it like this…” Yushu heard this, painfully held her head, squatting on the ground…

Yushu truly did not understand…

How, in just a few short days, her life has turned upside down, entirely unrecognizable…

Her sister plotted against her, chased after her…

Her personal guards died one by one to protect her…

Her East County was branded as a traitor because of her…

And now, even herself…
