The Side Character Who Wins by Doing Nothing

Ye Zhiyao had been hiding in a corner, thinking no one had noticed her, and had gradually let her guard down.

But she never expected to be suddenly attacked at this moment, and with her defenses completely down, she fell right into the trap.

In an instant, she recalled the hardships of her childhood. She remembered the ostracism she faced when she first joined the sect and the sweat and pain she endured to become stronger. Most of all, she remembered the losses she had suffered at Lu Sangjiu’s hands...

Piece by piece, past events surfaced in her mind. Things that hadn’t seemed so sad before now became a potent catalyst for tears, and she couldn’t help but be overcome with grief as they streamed down her face.

Ye Zhiyao was in agony. Even though she knew it was the effect of the Sadness Fan, she still couldn’t control the overwhelming sadness.

In truth, besides sadness, there was also resentment.

Resentment for Luo Linlang, and even more for Lu Sangjiu.

It seemed as if not just sadness had been awakened, but all her negative emotions.

She felt that Lu Sangjiu had stolen everything from her, causing her life to gradually worsen.

’She’s like a thorn in my flesh. As long as she exists, I’ll never know peace.’

In a way, she wasn’t wrong to think so. Lu Sangjiu had indeed come with the express purpose of taking everything from her.

Of course, in Lu Sangjiu’s eyes, that so-called ”everything” was never something Ye Zhiyao deserved in the first place.

It was just that no one could distinguish the absolute right or wrong in these matters. In the end, it was merely a difference in perspective, making their animosity inevitable.

Ye Zhiyao’s willpower was relatively strong. Curled up in the corner, she hugged herself tightly, even biting her lip to keep from making a sound. Only silent tears streamed down her cheeks.

At a glance, she really did look a little pitiful.

Lu Sangjiu had, of course, noticed Luo Linlang’s subtle move, as well as the change in Ye Zhiyao.

She knew her senior sister was secretly venting her anger for her. After all, it wasn’t appropriate to strike Ye Zhiyao too harshly, so making her suffer a little with the Sadness Fan was an excellent choice.

Lu Sangjiu didn’t say anything aloud. She just quietly gave Luo Linlang a thumbs-up and sent her a voice transmission: ”Thanks, Second Senior Sister! You’re the best!”

Luo Linlang was instantly delighted. She then also deliberately ignored Ye Zhiyao, pretending not to have noticed anything.

She looked at Yi Ze, who had been reduced to a weeping mess after being furiously fanned by the Sadness Fan. Her eyes darted, and she suddenly had an idea. ”Little Junior Sister, what do you plan to do with this guy?”

Lu Sangjiu replied, ”...I still think he needs a beating. Otherwise, it won’t be satisfying.”

With that, she tilted her head to look at Feng Lin and Chi Yan. ”What do you two think?”

Their eyes instantly lit up. ”Beat him! We have to beat him up!”

Normally, they might have been more hesitant. But spurred on by the alcohol, everyone was much bolder than usual and naturally did whatever felt good.

Luo Linlang hadn’t been drinking, but... ’Little Junior Sister was bullied, so what’s wrong with giving him a beating to let off some steam?’

So, she didn’t stop them, just waved a hand and said, ”Then go ahead and beat him! Just hand him over to me when you’re done, ’kay?”

The three drunkards exchanged a look, their eyes filled with excitement as they advanced on Yi Ze.

With tears streaming down his face, Yi Ze’s voice was filled with terror. ”You... what are you doing?”

”I’m warning you, if you hurt me, my master and the entire Beast Taming Sect will not let you off!”

Answering him was a punch to the face from Chi Yan. ”Shut up! You talk too damn much!”

This was a punch from a Body Cultivator. Even a casual blow packed immense power, and it directly knocked one of Yi Ze’s teeth out.

After that, Yi Ze couldn’t get another word out, because Lu Sangjiu and Feng Lin immediately followed up, each landing a punch of their own.

They aimed specifically for his face. After a round of this, Yi Ze’s face was swollen and bruised like a pig’s head—a truly miserable sight.

In reality, this kind of physical damage wasn’t particularly severe, but it was incredibly cathartic.

Yi Ze’s status was, after all, a factor. They didn’t go so far as to deal a fatal blow. If they had injured him irreparably, the matter would have escalated into a major incident.

But just letting off steam like this was nothing to worry about. This kind of minor injury could only be considered a squabble between juniors. Anyone who tried to make a big deal out of it would be ridiculed by everyone.

The three of them gave him a sound beating of punches and kicks, only stopping after a full quarter of an hour.

Looking at the pulp-faced Yi Ze, they finally felt vindicated. Chi Yan waved a hand. ”Let’s go, let’s go! Back to drinking!”

Lu Sangjiu chuckled and nodded. ”You guys go on ahead. I’ll catch up after I say a few words to my senior sister.”

As she spoke, she took out the Devouring Spirit Sand, completely destroyed the Barrier, and let the others return to the Moon Viewing Tower first.

Only then did Lu Sangjiu turn to look at Ye Zhiyao. By now, her eyes were swollen from crying, yet the tears still flowed uncontrollably.

Lu Sangjiu put on an expression as if she had just noticed her, looking surprised. ”Huh? Senior Sister Ye, why are you crying?”

”You’re not crying out of pity from watching us beat up Yi Ze, are you? Didn’t you say you didn’t know him, Senior Sister Ye?”

Seeing Lu Sangjiu putting on an act again, Ye Zhiyao was so angry she could have ground her teeth to dust. Her voice trembled. ”You used the Sadness Fan on me, and now you’re slandering me like this... Lu Sangjiu, don’t go too far!”

Lu Sangjiu feigned a sudden realization. ”Ah, so you were accidentally hit by the Sadness Fan?”

She looked at Luo Linlang. ”Second Senior Sister, you said your fan’s aim gets wonky when you haven’t used it in a while. Just look, look at the state Senior Sister Ye is in from all the crying!”

Luo Linlang immediately put on an exaggerated expression of remorse. ”Oh dear, look at me. I was so angry I wasn’t paying attention. Junior Sister Ye, are you alright?”

As she spoke, she stepped forward solicitously to help Ye Zhiyao up, even waving at Lu Sangjiu. ”Little Junior Sister, come help! Just look at how pitiful your Senior Sister Ye is.”

Lu Sangjiu obediently went over, helping to support her while saying, ”We’re so sorry, Senior Sister Ye. But you’re so beautiful and kind-hearted, you definitely won’t blame us, right?”

Luo Linlang: ”Of course she won’t! We just accidentally hit her while dealing with an enemy. Junior Sister Ye is so understanding, she’d never blame us!”

Ye Zhiyao: ”...”

This back-and-forth between the two of them nearly made her spit up blood from rage. But if she were to blame them, they had already claimed it was an accident. Wouldn’t pressing the issue just make her seem petty?

Besides, they hadn’t really hurt her. They had just used the Sadness Fan to mess with her. She couldn’t possibly go to the Sect Leader and ask him to intervene just because they made her cry, could she?

So, it seemed she had no choice but to swallow this bitter pill in silence today.

This thought made her feel even worse. At that moment, the effects of the Sadness Fan finally began to fade.

So, she wiped her tears, shrugged off their supporting hands, and stood firm on her own. ”It’s getting late... I’ll be leaving. Farewell.”

Lu Sangjiu hadn’t expected Ye Zhiyao to just give in without saying anything more.

But this was fine, too. She couldn’t be bothered to argue any further, so she said enthusiastically, ”Take care then, Senior Sister Ye! We’re busy, so we won’t see you out!”

Watching Ye Zhiyao’s desolate figure retreat, the smile on Lu Sangjiu’s face gradually faded.

’Actually... the Heavenly Dao doesn’t exactly treat Ye Zhiyao like its own precious daughter, does it?’
