The Side Character Who Wins by Doing Nothing

Lu Sangjiu didn’t know if Ye Zhiyao was truly seriously injured. What she did know for certain was that even if she’d wanted to, she definitely hadn’t had the spare energy to wound her that severely.

Qin Yu, for his part, had only knocked Ye Zhiyao unconscious. As for what might have happened after that, Lu Sangjiu had no idea.

In any case, she wasn’t taking the blame for this.

So, as Bai Heng and Ye Zhiyao put on their little show, Lu Sangjiu let out a cold laugh and spoke bluntly. ”Master Bai, that’s a rather serious accusation.”

”If you truly believe I tried to kill Senior Sister Ye on purpose, why haven’t you reported it to the Sect Leader? Why not let him get justice for her?”

Bai Heng’s face was grim. ”Aren’t you only acting so arrogantly because we have no proof? You’ve even deceived the Sect Leader!”

Lu Sangjiu raised an eyebrow. ”So, what you’re saying, Master Bai, is that you think the Sect Leader is an old fool, easily deceived by a junior like me? That you’re the only one who sees things clearly?”

”If you’re so brilliant, Master Bai, how come you’re not the Sect Leader of the Seven Emotions Sect?”

Bai Heng’s face instantly darkened. ”Unrepentant and utterly incorrigible!”

With that, he actually attacked Lu Sangjiu, right in front of everyone!

’This guy is insane!’ Lu Sangjiu hadn’t expected it. He’d launched a Spell at the first sign of disagreement. It was so fast and vicious, she had no time to defend herself.

At the critical moment, however, Sword Bu Gui intervened, blocking Bai Heng’s strike.

He narrowed his eyes at Bai Heng. ”Mr. Bai, to harm my guest in my presence... Are you disrespecting me, or are you disrespecting my Lingjian Sect?”

Bai Heng shot Sword Bu Gui a cold look. ”I am disciplining a disciple of my Seven Emotions Sect. What business is it of yours?”

”An elder attacking a junior over a simple disagreement... If you were to do something so shameless behind closed doors, I would indeed have no say in it.”

”But today, Lu is my guest, and I cannot stand by and watch you use your strength to bully her!”

Sword Bu Gui’s tone was mild, yet his words were laced with barbs. The tension between the two men instantly crackled and grew thick.

Lu Sangjiu breathed a small sigh of relief. ’At least Sword Bu Gui has some conscience. He might be using me as a shield, but at least he didn’t abandon me completely.’

’With how shameless Bai Heng is, if that attack had landed, I would’ve been seriously injured. I might not have even been able to participate in the upcoming Sword Seizing Conference.’

Lu Sangjiu gritted her teeth in her mind. ’Sooner or later, I’m going to kill that old bastard Bai Heng!’

With Sword Bu Gui determined to protect Lu Sangjiu, it was clear Bai Heng wouldn’t be getting his way today.

And so, Ye Zhiyao promptly stepped in to smooth things over.

”Master, please calm down! Junior Sister Lu has always been unruly, but she certainly didn’t mean to offend you.”

”Besides... Junior Sister Lu and I hold no grudges against each other. I’m sure she didn’t mean to harm me on purpose.”

With that, she stood up, gracefully picked up her wine cup, and looked toward Lu Sangjiu.

”Junior Sister Lu, whatever misunderstandings we may have had, let’s drink this wine today and put it all behind us. What do you say?”

Lu Sangjiu was speechless. ’Ye Zhiyao really is something else. She conveniently fails to mention a single word about how she went ballistic and tried to kill me.’

’Now, after putting on that little show with Bai Heng and pinning all the blame on me, she’s pretending to be magnanimous and wants to just let it go.’

’If I refuse, it’ll make me look petty and unreasonable.’

’Ye Zhiyao really was a pro-level white lotus. Impressive.’

Lu Sangjiu looked at her, and it seemed she could see the barely suppressed provocation in her eyes.

No matter what Lu Sangjiu chose now, she would be the one losing out.

’But... who said she had to choose at all?’

The next moment, Lu Sangjiu clutched her chest and violently spewed a mouthful of blood!

The spray of blood traveled an impressive distance. Ye Zhiyao felt a cool splash on her face, and when she instinctively raised a hand to wipe it, she came away with a palmful of blood.

Ye Zhiyao: ”...”

A wave of nausea washed over her, and she hurriedly took out a handkerchief to wipe her face.

The others were also stunned by Lu Sangjiu’s sudden outburst, left utterly speechless.

Only Gu Jue reacted quickly enough to catch Lu Sangjiu. ”Ms. Lu, are you all right?”

Lu Sangjiu took the opportunity to collapse into Gu Jue’s arms, her voice as faint as a fading thread. ”My... my old ailment... it flared up. When Master Bai startled me... my vital energy was thrown into chaos.”

”COUGH, COUGH, COUGH...” She broke into a coughing fit, then turned her head with great difficulty to look at Ye Zhiyao.

”Senior Sister Ye... I’m so sorry. I didn’t mean to... to spray blood all over your face.”

”Please don’t be disgusted. I may not have brushed my teeth today, but... I did brush them the day before yesterday.”

Ye Zhiyao: ”...”

Everyone else: ”...”

Of course, a Cultivator could become perfectly clean with a simple spell. Her comment about not brushing her teeth was obviously meant to disgust and provoke.

But even knowing this, Ye Zhiyao was still thoroughly grossed out. For a moment, her expression twisted.

Yet she still wanted to maintain her image, so she forced a pained smile. ”...Why would I? I... Of course I’m not disgusted, Junior Sister Lu.”

Lu Sangjiu blinked. ”But you’re rubbing your face so hard it’s turning red.”

Ye Zhiyao: ”...”

Bai Heng could no longer hold back. ”Lu Sangjiu! My attack was completely neutralized by Sword Bu Gui! It didn’t even touch you. What is this act?!”

Lu Sangjiu flinched dramatically and burrowed deeper into Gu Jue’s arms. ”Sob, sob... Master Bai is so scary...”

Sword Bu Gui: ”...”

’Even though she’s on our side, this act is just too fake!’

Sword Bu Gui couldn’t bear to watch. Gu Jue, however, looked up, his gaze sharp and cold as he stared at Bai Heng.

”Does Elder Bai not know? Ms. Lu suffers from a chronic ailment that can flare up at any moment!”

”You attacked first, Elder Bai, and now you threaten her. Are you perhaps trying to kill Ms. Lu on purpose?”

Sword Bu Gui: ”...”

’Damn it, some fool actually believed her. And that fool just had to be my own disciple!’

Sword Bu Gui couldn’t help but press a hand to his chest, his feelings a complicated mess. ’So, the reason my disciple hasn’t shown a hint of romantic interest all these years is because he’s into the whole damsel-in-distress act?’

Meanwhile, Bai Heng was about to explode with rage. He slammed a hand on the table as he shot to his feet, and the table instantly shattered into pieces with a loud CRASH.

”Ignorant child, do you have any idea who you’re talking to?”

Although Sword Bu Gui’s heart was still sinking, he couldn’t let his own disciple be bullied. He stood up as well. ”What is it, Bai Heng? My disciple was merely standing up for justice. Are you planning to attack him for it?”

He paused, then, as if feeling he needed more emphasis, he also slammed a hand down on his table. His strike was even more powerful, and the table instantly exploded into dust.

The two elders from the Gold and Silver Gate: ”...”

’All they wanted to do right now was hold each other and have a good cry. How on earth had a perfectly fine welcome banquet turned into this?!’

’That Lu Sangjiu... she’s an absolute menace!’
