Transmigration: The Evil Mother-In-Law Is Actually Innocent!

Chapter 1364: Chapter 1364: Generous

capital, Zhulan looked at her daughter in formal attire, ”Have you just returned from within the palace?”

Xue Han nodded, ”Yes, the Tribes of the Grasslands have come to the capital, and today I dressed in formal attire to accompany the Empress to meet a few Princess Consorts.”

Zhulan knew, ”They came to seek help because of the disaster caused by heavy snow?”

Xue Han, ”This year’s snow on the grasslands was also heavy, killing a lot of cattle and sheep.”

”Is the Retired Emperor feeling any better?”

That the Retired Emperor has been so quiet this winter is all because he overindulged in the south, completely forgetting how old he was. Upon returning to the capital, he felt unwell, and when winter set in, he stayed in the Qin Prince Residence. The recent heavy snow has made the Retired Emperor fall ill.

Xue Han, ”Father’s illness is not serious, but Mother is worried and has been watching over him. Now he is almost fully recovered.”

If it wasn’t for Mother’s vigilance, Father wouldn’t have been so quiet. In these past few years, Father has really become more and more wilful.

She could understand, Father had lived through painful suppression in his youth and had to keep his courage in check when he became Emperor, not able to do as he pleased. Now that he has stepped down, he has gradually become more unrestrained.

Zhulan, ”Did you come here with a matter after leaving the palace?”

Xue Han smiled, ”I came to get the pickles made by my eldest sister-in-law. Father and Mother have been missing her pickles, and we ran out of them at home, so I took a detour to come back.”

Zhulan laughed, ”I thought it was something serious. You could have just sent someone to fetch them. Ever since your eldest sister-in-law learned that the Retired Emperor likes them, she has taken over the pickle making at home. Now, all the pickles are personally prepared by her.”

”Don’t overwork my sister-in-law.”

”She’s very enthusiastic about it.”

Xue Han asked, ”How are Wanwan and the child?”

”They are doing well.”

Initially, Wanwan was exhausted by the child’s fussing, but after recuperation, the child has stopped making a fuss.

Wong family, Yu Lu was not lonely at all. All the grandson generations in the various branches were the only descendants, except for the eldest branch that had no daughters. The second and third branches had daughters from concubines.

The main daughters of the Wong family were rare, and of course, because there were no main daughters, concubine daughters seemed all the more precious.

Yu Lu had plenty of nice things, and being pregnant with Babe, her maternal family sent various foods, her husband also sought some out to bring back, and with the additions from her elders, Yu Lu became a favorite place for her half-sisters from the other two branches to visit.

Although Yu Lu did not like these two cousins, she knew exactly why they came—it wasn’t just because there were many nice things here, but because they wanted to foster a good relationship with her.

The second branch’s granddaughter Wang Hua looked at the glass clock on the table, ”This wasn’t here yesterday, did your eldest brother buy this for sister-in-law?”

Yu Lu, ”No, it was my second brother who brought it over yesterday.”

Third branch’s granddaughter Wong Yun concealed the sarcasm in her eyes, ”The Princely Heir is really good to sister-in-law.”

She was truly envious. Both had brothers, but her brother treasured himself and did not have her, the concubine-born sister, in his eyes. Although the third branch was also born of concubine heritage, she still cared much about the distinction between legitimate and illegitimate lineage.

Yu Lu had no intention of showing off; she simply liked the glass clock better, so she had sent the original one to her husband’s study room.

Yu Lu smiled and said, ”Our family’s siblings are quite close to each other.”

Wang Hua and Wong Yun both fell silent. The Zhou family had no concubine-born children, all were legitimate, and without the worry of backyard disputes, they were naturally closer.

Even though the children of the Wong family were few and not especially close, due to the relations among the branches, they were not affectionate with each other.

Wong Wei returned from outside, and seeing snow on his head, Yu Lu asked, ”Is it snowing again?”

Wong Wei unwrapped his cloak, ”It’s heavy, and the two sisters have come.”

Wang Hua and Wong Yun stood up, ”Now that brother is back, we will also take our leave.”

Wong Wei smiled and nodded, ”Alright.”

After the guests left, Wong Wei helped his wife to sit down, ”They didn’t disturb your rest, did they?”

How to say it, he was not particularly affectionate towards these two sisters. They hadn’t grown up together, and even though they were related by blood, they had not interacted much, so they couldn’t really develop a close bond.

Yu Lu shook her head, ”It was quite nice chatting with them.”

Wong Wei simply didn’t believe it, ”They have so many petty thoughts, if you don’t want to deal with them, just don’t see them.”

Yu Lu waved her hand, ”If I don’t meet the second wife and the third wife, they will go complain to our ancestors.”

Wong Wei fell silent, ”You have to think about so many things even though you are pregnant; I’m not as good as the big brother-in-law.”

Yu Lu, ”You’ve done very well already, you’ve pampered me until I’ve become quite plump.”

Wong Wei smiled, hmm, his wife indeed had gained quite a bit of weight.

The next day, since Zhulan entered her confinement she hadn’t stepped out. Zhulan decided to personally pick up the jewelry made for her granddaughter, which were for Jiang Miu’s marriage.

Yu Die knew and wanted to go as well, Zhulan with a big gesture agreed for them all to go.

Yu Jiao, taking advantage of her young age, snuggled up beside her grandmother, ”Grandma, the bridal jewelry you custom-made for my cousin must be beautiful.”

Zhulan smiled, ”Of course, your grandmother designed it personally.”

Zhulan had also helped design Yushuang’s and Yu Lu’s bridal jewelry, so naturally, Jiang Miu would not be overlooked.

Yu Jiao pointed at herself, ”I want Grandma to design mine when I get married too.”

Zhulan, ”Alright, alright, there will be sets for everyone, everyone.”

Once they arrived at the jewelry store, the only one truly interested in browsing was Yu Jiao. Yu Die and the others had been to the store too many times; they glanced once, picked something they liked, and then wanted to look elsewhere.

Yu Die said, ”Grandma, Yu Wen and I are going to the store next door to buy materials for making seals.”

Zhulan, engrossed in the new jewelry and planning to buy several pieces for her granddaughter, did not look up and responded, ”Alright.”

Yu Yi rubbed her forehead, ”Grandma, I will go have a look too.”

Zhulan raised her head and patted Yu Yi on the shoulder, ”Thank you for your efforts.”

This is no younger sister; she’s definitely like an older sister.

Yu Jiao couldn’t help but burst into laughter at her sister’s lovelorn appearance.

In the store next door, Yu Die made a beeline for the material she desired, and Yu Wen also perked up. She wanted to buy two pieces for her father and brother. Both sisters, spoiled by their father, had high standards and went straight for the best cabinet.

As the two young ladies approached, the material Yu Die was interested in was snatched away by someone else, leaving them no choice but to look on eagerly.

The second young master Liu picked up the material to examine closely, very satisfied, but the price was a bit high. If it weren’t for his grandfather’s birthday, he really wouldn’t be willing to spend the silver, ”Shopkeeper, make it cheaper, look at this material, the colors aren’t even, I’ll take it for fifty taels.”

The shopkeeper’s mouth twitched. The last person he wanted to see was the second young master Liu, who bargained ruthlessly every time he came, cutting the price in half right from the start. The shopkeeper held onto the material with his chubby hand, ”Maybe you would like to look at some others?”

He said while trying to pull the material back, but it wouldn’t budge.

The second young master Liu refused to let go, ”Then fifty-one taels, no more.”

Shopkeeper, ”... Please have a look again, I really can’t sell it for that price.”

The second young master Liu still wouldn’t release it, ”I’ve always supported your business, shopkeeper, give me an honest price.”

The shopkeeper thought to himself, there was no need for his support; he couldn’t even acquire the stock at that price.

Yu Die was dumbfounded, this young master was bullying people, seeing how he made it tough for the shopkeeper.

Yu Wen had already chosen her material and gestured with her hand, ”Third sister, I helped you pick some too, do you like them?”

Yu Die came back to her senses, ”Like them, like them very much.”

Then the two young ladies called the shopkeeper over, ”Shopkeeper, let’s settle the bill.”

The shopkeeper recognized the young ladies of the Zhou family, patrons with silver.

Yu Die took out some silver she had gotten from her mother, along with her own silver, her purse was bulging, she slapped down a hundred taels, ”Shopkeeper, give me the change.”

Yu Wen also opened her purse, ”And mine.”

This time it was the second young master Liu’s turn to be dumbfounded, who was this young lady so generous with money? Then his heart ached, why didn’t she bargain? She definitely could have bargained!
