SSS Awakening: I Can Devour Gods to Evolve My Goddesses

Chapter 26: This Hand Doesn’t Guard the Gate

Two charcoal lines marked the floor of the stone hall.

One stopped at the first relay.

The other passed beyond the Mausoleum, turned into the ash ditches outside, and ended nowhere fixed.

Cassian crouched before them. Pain pressed into his right knee before it had even finished bending.

The new linen around his shoulder was much softer than the old cloth.

The wound had not healed. At least every lift of his arm no longer ground a hardened crust of fabric against his flesh.

He extended the second line by an inch.

”If you’re buying a pair of eyes that can walk,” Veyra said, ”don’t have them look only for that low carrier.”

Cassian looked up.

She was still chained to the black-gold divine seat. Orin Hale’s half-mark remained face-down beside the closed main roll.

”What do you want found?”

”A higher stride. Weight carried on one side.”

Veyra looked east.

”Bell-Keeper carries two bells of unequal weight, and Orin’s name.”

”That doesn’t prove it ever used a mouth outside.”

”I didn’t say it did.”

Veyra looked back at him.

”I want to know if something else passed through.”

The charcoal turned once between Cassian’s fingers.

He had only meant to find someone who could track the carrier.

Now the same pair of eyes would also have to separate two kinds of weight from old ash.

That would cost more.

”Marek has seen the traces it left.”

”Marek holds one stretch of road.”

”I can pay more.”

Veyra did not argue. She only looked at the two lines on the floor.

Cassian suddenly disliked the second one even more.

— — —

”I can’t.”

Marek answered quickly.

They had met outside an old wheel shed in the Ashen March. The short hemp rope still hung from Marek’s shoulder.

Cassian glanced at him.

”You didn’t even wait for me to finish asking.”

”I heard enough.”

Marek tapped the gray dirt churned up by wheels outside the shed with his boot.

”If something passed in front of me now, I’d know when it was time to stop. I can’t tell you what got dragged through here three days ago.”

”Could you learn?”

”Not my trade.”

Cassian’s first instinct was still to offer more money.

How did reading a few more marks on the ground become an entirely different job? Keeping the same man on it had to be safer than giving a stranger information about the area near an entrance.

But not knowing was not knowing.

More money could buy more of Marek’s time. It could not make a new pair of eyes grow out of nowhere.

”Iven Rook,” Marek said. ”He’s found pack animals and cargo lost in ash ditches before.”

”You vouch for him?”

”I vouch that he’s found them before.”

Marek shifted the hemp rope higher on his shoulder.

”How much he charges, when he leaves, and whether he’ll take your job—you ask him yourself.”

That was the kind of recommendation Marek would give.

A name, without a guarantee.

Cassian memorized the meeting place.

— — —

Iven Rook arrived about eight minutes late.

One side of his old boots was worn thinner than the other. Dry mud stained his cuffs. He carried no weapon worth mentioning, only a short shovel and three wooden probes of different thicknesses.

He looked at Cassian’s face first, then down at his feet.

”You won’t put your full weight on your right knee.”

The back of Cassian’s neck tightened.

His fingers nearly touched the hilt of his bent broken blade.

”Marek told you?”

”He only said someone was paying.”

Iven pointed his shovel at the spot where Cassian had been standing.

”Your right print is shallow. The outside of your left foot presses harder. When you raise your right shoulder, your body shifts left.”

There was no sympathy in his voice.

He might have been describing which side someone had lifted a crate from.

Cassian liked it even less.

He was not afraid of someone knowing he was injured. What irritated him was that he had never chosen when to reveal it, and this man had already seen.

The uglier emotion came right after.

Envy.

Iven could see something in the ash prints that Cassian could not.

”Sell me the method,” Cassian said.

Iven shook his head.

”I sell conclusions.”

”Afraid I won’t hire you after I learn it?”

”Afraid you’ll learn a little, then use your life to pay the tuition for the rest.”

Cassian watched him for two breaths.

Iven did not look away.

”One fee for showing up,” he said. ”If the ground still has something to say, I’ll give you a conclusion. If that conclusion makes you change your route, that’s another fee. If rain, wind, or feet have erased the ash, I’ll tell you I don’t know. The first fee doesn’t come back.”

”What if you see pale-gold light?”

”I leave.”

”Fighting?”

”Hire someone else.”

He had put his skill on display.

He had also shown exactly where the evidence stopped.

Cassian did not like it.

He liked it a little, too.

A man willing to say he did not know when the evidence ran out usually cost more than one who could explain everything.

”Half a day,” Cassian said. ”I’ll buy one job first.”

Iven held out his hand.

”The arrival fee.”

Cassian counted it out from the ordinary coin Joren had paid him.

Only when the coins landed in his palm did Iven turn away.

”Where first?”

Cassian had screened the ash ditches, scorched ground, and drainage channels outside, leaving only three sites.

The first two each matched part of what he wanted. One might be nothing more than receding water. Another might only be a broken axle. Yet both looked as though something underground had moved.

At the final site, an old ash ditch cut through a collapsed kiln, with drainage stones still lining the bottom. Only the combination of all three was worth betting money on.

He deliberately left the most valuable site for last.

”We’ll start with the two easiest to be fooled by,” Cassian said.

— — —

Cassian did not take him to the narrow mouth he had already seen.

The first site was a shallow ditch below an abandoned lime kiln.

White ash had gathered on the sheltered side. It looked much like the place where the carrier had appeared.

Iven crouched for only a moment.

”There was water here last night.”

He pushed a wooden probe into the ash. The layer beneath came up wet and black.

”The ash was pasted there when the water receded. Nothing moved underneath.”

Cassian changed sites.

The second had scorched earth and two broken drag marks.

Iven followed them for a dozen steps, then stopped beside a pile of pottery shards.

”An old axle broke here.”

He pointed to a piece of rust pressed into the dirt.

At the third site, the old ash ditch cut diagonally through a collapsed kiln. The edges of drainage stones showed beneath a layer of pale ash.

This was the place Cassian truly wanted tested.

He took down the small sack he had filled with stones in advance.

He intended to let Iven examine the drag marks different weights left in the ash ditch.

Iven did not look at the sack.

He stared at a patch of pale ground farther down the slope.

”Don’t go over there.”

Cassian still had one hand around the mouth of the sack.

”Reason.”

Iven stopped five steps short of the pale patch and lifted a pinch of loose ash with his shovel.

Insect trails, almost too fine to see, emerged from the cracks between the stones and curved around the edge of the patch.

On the other side, a string of small-animal prints also stopped at the pale ash and detoured behind the drainage stones.

”That detour isn’t fresh,” Iven said. ”Something underneath moved first.”

Cassian studied the pale ash.

Wind blew down the slope. Loose powder rolled with it. Nothing pulled backward. No pale-gold light appeared.

Nothing happened.

”Certain it’s a mouth?”

”No.”

Iven laid the thinnest wooden probe across the ash.

The probe did not sink, but the powder around it sat in a ring slightly lower than either side. There were no footprints and no dragged load, as though something underneath had removed the support.

”I’m only certain that pale ridge can’t be stepped on.”

”What can?”

Iven pointed at the drainage stones jutting out beside it.

”Small animals crossed them. The seams haven’t opened.”

One conclusion.

One edge he could walk.

The discomfort in Cassian’s chest pricked again.

He had chosen this site.

But Iven had been the first to see which part of the ground truly mattered.

”There’s this, too.”

Iven shifted two steps farther around the edge.

Several old gouges lay far apart in the ash, all on one side. Some were short, some long. There was no continuous scuffing from a low body dragging between them.

”Not the thing with six short legs,” Cassian said.

”Not the same kind of weight.”

”What passed through?”

”Upright, or at least carrying itself higher. The heavy weight was on one side.”

Iven lifted the short shovel.

”Could have been a person carrying iron. Could have been something else. That’s all the ash can tell us.”

The second kind of trace Veyra wanted.

It was not an answer.

But at least the question had made it outside the Mausoleum.

The loose ash on the pale ground suddenly stopped.

An instant later, three thin threads of dust drew inward against the wind coming down the slope.

Cassian’s stomach clenched.

Pale-gold light rose beneath the ridge.

Iven was already backing away.

”My work ends here.”

”Take the route we came by,” Cassian said.

”I don’t need the reminder.”

Iven stowed his shovel and withdrew toward the far side of the slope along the route they had checked beforehand.

He did not wait for Cassian’s permission. Nor did he look back to see what would emerge from the light.

Cassian listened until the footsteps passed the safe turn, then drew his bent broken blade.

The pale ridge had already split.

If he had ignored Iven, his right foot would now be planted on that hollow shell.

Having someone else be right was irritating.

Having a retreat route underfoot felt much better.

Cassian stepped onto the drainage stones.

The moment his right knee took his weight, sharp pain drilled upward. He did not shift to the pale ridge. He lowered his center of gravity and checked that the two stones behind him were still firm.

Pale-gold light climbed to the edge of the opening.

The first thing to emerge was not the low carrier.

A forearm-long shell of gray-white bone slid flat along the ground. It was narrow in front and wide at the rear. Four hooked limbs unfolded from beneath it. It had no head and no eyes.

As the four limbs touched down, the thin central seam opened slightly.

The heat of complete divinity seeped through it.

Cassian’s palm grew hot.

The craving he had forced down when he personally let the last complete prey escape surged back.

This time, it did not need to lead him anywhere.

This time, it had already come out of the road.

The gray-white shell suddenly sprang up.

Its two front hooks scissored toward Cassian’s knee from either side.

Cassian retreated half a step first, letting their tips scrape across the drainage stone.

When the shell landed, all four limbs braced at once. The central seam opened another fraction to shed the force.

There.

He had to reach it first.

Predator Step I activated.

The drainage stones shot backward beneath his feet.

It felt as though a nail had been driven through his right knee. Cassian still followed his chosen short line and crashed into the shell’s side.

The tip of his bent blade entered the closing seam.

He had seen it.

He had reached it.

Divine Rend I flared in a line of black-gold radiance.

Crack.

The seam split from its front end to the middle of the shell.

The gray-white thing did not die at once.

The two rear hooks flipped violently upward. One tore through Cassian’s coat. The other struck his right shoulder.

The old wound clenched so hard with pain that his fingers loosened.

The shell immediately retreated toward the opening.

Cassian did not chase it onto the pale ridge.

He jammed the curve of his blade into the split seam and drew the iron hammer with his left hand.

The first blow smashed one hooked limb back into the ground.

The second landed in the opening torn by Divine Rend.

Gray-white light swelled inside the shell, then collapsed.

The thing still scraped another half-foot toward the mouth.

Cassian’s right knee trembled.

He let himself drop to one knee on the stable drainage stone without letting his body tilt a single inch toward the hollow shell. He twisted the prey back with his broken blade, then brought the third hammer blow down and shattered the central connection completely.

All four hooked limbs stopped at once.

Cassian took two breaths. He did not release it immediately.

No severed limb lay outside the opening.

There was no second section of its body in the pale-gold light.

Complete.

He could no longer hear Iven’s footsteps beyond the slope.

The black-gold lines in Cassian’s palm opened.

[Complete hostile divine target detected.]

[Kill ownership confirmed: Cassian Vale.]

[Divine Devourer activated.]

The gray-white shell collapsed inward beneath his hammer.

Hooked limbs, central seam, and the final trace of divinity were all dragged into Cassian’s palm by the black-gold lines. No material remained.

Liquid heat sank through his arm and into his chest.

[Complete devouring confirmed.]

[Divine Essence: +1]

[Cassian: 3 available / 29 cumulative]

One point.

Cassian closed his eyes and let the warmth remain for one extra breath.

It was not much.

He still liked it.

Some of his regret over the last complete prey finally eased.

Iven had sold him nothing more than an edge where he could stand.

The prey had still died by his hand.

The pale-gold light inside the shallow mouth began to sink.

Cassian watched it.

No larger body emerged.

What he had bought today was a line he could stand on, not a second gamble with his life against an unknown hole.

Cassian put away his blade and hammer, then withdrew along the drainage stones.

The pale ridge behind him sank another layer as the light disappeared.

— — —

Iven did not reappear until the last pale-gold glow had vanished behind the slope.

He looked first at the collapsed ridge, then at the ash on Cassian’s boots.

”You used the drainage stones.”

”That’s why you’ve earned your second fee.”

Cassian tossed him the coins.

Iven caught them. He did not ask what had come out of the crack, or where the body had gone.

Only after counting the coins did he ask, ”Next time?”

”Ten days. No more than three calls. Only old ash, lime, and drainage ground outside.”

Cassian said, ”You look at each site first, then decide whether you’ll take it. Any abnormal location or conclusion uncovered on my coin doesn’t get sold to someone else first.”

”The method isn’t for sale.”

Cassian still disliked that condition. But three results were worth more than half-learning the craft now.

”Your method stays yours. Anything that comes out of there is mine. We renegotiate after ten days or after all three calls.”

Iven glanced at the collapsed ridge.

”I wasn’t planning to fight you for it.”

Iven put the coins away. Next time, Cassian would still have to call him in again.

Enough.

— — —

Back in the Mausoleum, Cassian sketched the old one-sided gouges with a piece of charcoal.

Veyra studied them for a long time.

”Not proof,” she said.

”I know.”

”It doesn’t prove Bell-Keeper. It doesn’t prove a bell. And it doesn’t prove the thing carried Orin.”

”But it wasn’t the low carrier.”

Veyra’s gaze moved from the charcoal marks to Cassian’s face.

”Not the same kind of load.”

That was enough.

She stopped the conclusion there. She did not invent a name for an old trace.

Cassian was satisfied instead.

He called up the balance only he could see.

Three points.

Twenty-nine cumulative.

His right knee still hurt. Neither the new linen nor that one point of divinity had healed his right shoulder. He had less ordinary coin, and one more man outside who was free to say he did not know or would not take the job.

But that man had pointed out a stable edge today.

At the end of that edge, Cassian had swallowed a complete divine target with his own hands.

He looked down at the two charcoal lines on the floor.

Marek could watch the fixed one.

Iven could search the moving ground.

Veyra could tell him what an old trace might mean.

He would decide which one to pursue.

And once a mouth opened—

Cassian rubbed his thumb across the last trace of black-gold heat in his palm.

Next time, he wanted to be there earlier.

He would let the thing carrying weight on one side move farther from the entrance.

Far enough that it could no longer vanish after leaving only one old trace.
