SSS Awakening: I Can Devour Gods to Evolve My Goddesses

Chapter 18: He Bought the Wrong Door

[Rowan has acquired the Graystone external dead drop.]

[Starting tomorrow at noon, the next anonymous object placed in that box will enter my chain of custody first.]

There was no price.

No condition.

Graystone—the external drop Cassian had once used—had already changed hands.

Cassian looked at the two lines attached to the Newcomer Divine Essence Ranking, and the corner of his mouth moved first.

Twenty-two.

At last, an A-rank had stopped waiting for Cassian to name a price and spent money on a position first.

The satisfaction had barely warmed his chest when his stomach slowly turned cold.

Because Rowan had bought the right clue.

Not the Gate. Not the first relay. Not the real entrance. But Graystone had returned something for Cassian before.

The gauge sent back through that box had carried the last anonymous reading into a crew network Rowan had reserved. Three readings. One used box. And Cassian’s public cumulative value rising from nineteen to twenty-two.

It was not proof.

It was enough for a wealthy A-rank to place a bet.

Cassian’s thumb paused over the reply field.

He badly wanted to write: You bought an empty box.

The moment he did, he would be telling Rowan that the box really had carried something of his.

Another urge followed immediately. He could send an irrelevant old stone, or a strip that had lost all use, and make Rowan stand guard over trash while watching his own guess fail.

All it would take was one genuine thing.

And precisely because it was genuine, that one thing would give Rowan the final confirmation he lacked.

Cassian moved his finger away from the interface.

He hated winning this way. He hated even more that Rowan could buy crews, waiting, and a position that might be useless, while Cassian still had to calculate the cost of abandoning a fallback route.

”What did he buy?” Veyra asked.

She still sat upon the black-gold divine seat. The black-gold case containing the sealed Third Formation’s roll of the fallen rested on the Shrine floor, with Orin Hale’s empty slot turned toward her right hand.

”An external box I’ve used before.”

Cassian dismissed the interface.

”He doesn’t know where it leads, or where the twenty-two points came from. He’s waiting for me to tell him whether he bought the right thing.”

Veyra watched him.

”What are you going to give him?”

”Nothing.”

Only after the word fell did the tension in Cassian’s shoulders ease by a fraction.

”The first relay needs new rules,” he said. ”From now on, anything found beyond the Gate enters my handling first.”

Veyra’s gaze shifted to the black-gold case.

”Hostile divinity, if you can take it, is your prey.”

”Names are not.”

”Old military records are not.”

Cassian’s brow lowered.

”The Gate is mine.”

”Which is why you open it, and why you close it.”

Veyra’s right hand remained beside the empty slot. She knew he disliked the cut she had made. She did not take it back.

Cassian did not negotiate the same boundary again.

”Names and old military records stay sealed. They do not leave,” he said. ”Hostile divinity still comes to me first.”

”As it should.”

Cassian looked once more at the empty reply field, then closed it completely.

Rowan did not receive a single word.

The second formal watch began at the agreed time.

As before, Cassian hooded Marek before the true entrance and personally led him through the last stretch. The Chain Gate opened only wide enough for one person, then closed behind them.

Marek carried an extra piece of gray iron.

”Graystone’s old plate.”

He turned it over.

A newly stamped thunder-spear seal punched through the middle of the faded box number. Rowan’s men had thrown the old plate beside the box when they replaced it.

”The shed and the box are both his now,” Marek said. ”My cart isn’t. And what other jobs I take is none of his business.”

”Did you speak to him?”

”No.”

Marek held out the plate.

”I only went to see whether the old drop could still be used. It can’t. You’re paying for today’s trip. Facts from outside still count as facts.”

Cassian took the plate.

It was light.

The only thing that had reached his hands from the position Rowan bought was this discarded plate, punched through by a thunder-spear.

Cassian paid the agreed fee for the current entry. He sent Marek across the black-gold plate empty-handed first. Only after Marek reached the first relay did Cassian cross alone with the iron plate, the hammer, and the bent broken-chain blade.

They never stood on the span together.

Underground dawnlight still rose from below the break. The stone shoulder beside the first relay quietly bore Marek’s weight.

Yesterday, something hidden beneath the plate had been spotted early from this exact position.

Today, Rowan’s thunder-spear had entered the real route for the first time.

And Rowan himself had no idea.

The coldness in Cassian’s chest heated again.

He had remembered Rowan’s strength and wealth since Crownspire Awakening Square. Now that man had tried to put his name ahead of Cassian’s, yet the mark he left behind was lying at Cassian’s feet.

”What do you want me to do?” Marek asked.

”Watch. Report only what you see.”

Cassian turned the iron plate blank-side up. The edge of the bent blade pressed down and carved the first line.

[Hostile divinity: Cassian handles it first.]

He paused before cutting the second line.

The plate was his. The first relay was his. Yet the boundary Veyra had drawn would remain on his road by his own hand.

[Names and old military records: sealed. Not to be taken outside.]

Marek read both lines.

”How I observe is still my decision?”

”You decide.”

”If I call a stop, both sides stop?”

”Both stop.”

”If I don’t want to come in next time, I can refuse?”

Cassian looked up at him.

”This plate doesn’t buy your next entry.”

Marek nodded.

He made no oath. He did not promise to guard anything for Cassian.

He simply chose a new angle at the old warning point and tied his short hemp rope back onto the warning bolt. After two test pulls, he shifted the knot away from a spot that would have worn through the fibers.

”This is where I’ll watch from today.”

Cassian found a natural seam in the stone beside him.

He turned the plate around, with the thunder-spear seal facing the seam and the two lines facing the first relay. The hammer fell lightly three times. On the third, his right shoulder tightened.

Cassian switched to his left hand and did not add another heavy strike.

The plate bore no load. It could not watch the road for anyone.

Its edge disappeared into the seam a little at a time. Rowan’s thunder-spear turned into the darkness with it.

At last, neither Graystone’s old box number nor the thunder-spear seal could be seen from the first relay.

Only Cassian’s name and the two boundaries he had carved remained.

The rope would leave with Marek. The plate would not.

Rowan had paid to nail his mark onto the outside door. Inside the true route, that mark could only remain on the back of Cassian’s rules, facing stone.

Cassian let the satisfaction stay for one extra breath.

”Begin.”

Marek returned to the edge of the stone shoulder.

Cassian crossed the black-gold plate alone and returned to the near side. Once again, they stood at opposite ends of the first stretch.

Before long, Marek suddenly raised one hand.

”There’s something in the direction of the second break.”

Cassian stopped.

”A thin dark-copper tag. About the length of a finger. It just flipped out from the broken edge and got caught.”

”What’s on it?”

”One shallow engraving. Too far away to read.”

”Did you touch it?”

”No.”

Cassian could not see the tag.

The first relay lay across a stretch of black-gold plate. From the near side, all he could hear was Marek’s voice.

”Don’t touch it,” Cassian said. ”Keep watching.”

Marek lowered his hand and remained where he had chosen to stand.

The box at Graystone was still empty.

But something had already arrived at the real door.

Was the mark on that dark-copper tag a name—or bait someone had left for Cassian?
