SSS Awakening: I Can Devour Gods to Evolve My Goddesses

Chapter 22: The Road Sank Before He Arrived

”Next time that bell rings,” Veyra said, ”don’t let it use your footsteps as a clock again.”

Cassian stopped before the black-gold divine throne.

”My footsteps?”

”It has seen them once already.”

Veyra’s right hand rested on the closed main roll. Orin’s half-mark remained seated in its original place inside the case. Her wrist could rise only half an inch, yet the Eclipse Chains drew taut with the motion.

”The warning sounds. The man withdraws. Then you run from the Chain Gate to the first relay.”

”The road still went down.”

”Because you got there.”

She raised her gray-gold eyes.

”Next time, I want it not to know whether the road still has to wait for you.”

Cassian’s first impulse was to remind her who decided what happened at the Chain Gate.

The words reached his tongue, then stopped there.

Veyra had not chosen a worker for him. She had not touched his road. She had only pointed out something the Bell-Keeper had already taken.

Time.

It now knew how long Cassian needed to appear after the warning.

That knowledge sat badly with him.

And it needed to be taken back.

Less than half a day later, Cassian stopped Marek’s cart outside the true entrance.

Two wooden crates had already been lashed down on the cart. Marek checked the sky, then looked at him.

”The seven days are over.”

”Which is why today gets a new price.”

”I already took another job.”

”I’ll cover whatever this costs you.”

Marek did not agree at once.

”Tell me what you want first.”

Cassian blindfolded him himself and led him through only the final stretch. The Chain Gate opened just wide enough for one person, then closed behind them.

They stopped at the near side of the first black-gold road plate.

The Graystone iron marker was gone. Across the plate, the shallow hollow it had left on the first relay stood plainly empty.

Cassian placed his hand on the near-side palm mark.

Before he could speak, a bell rang from the direction of the second gap.

It was not the muffled knock from inside the Gate.

This sound was thinner and farther away. It scraped along the broken road and stone walls. The bent broken-chain blade at Cassian’s back gave a faint tremor.

The Bell-Keeper’s functioning bone bell.

It had arrived before they had settled the price.

Marek turned toward the first relay.

”If I wait out this underground dawn tide, my original run loses half a day. You still pay for it.”

”Agreed.”

”Entry costs extra.”

”Agreed.”

”If I actually have to lower the road, that costs another share.”

Cassian looked at him.

Marek met his eyes.

”That was not part of my last seven days.”

The bell’s lingering vibration faded from the broken blade.

Cassian knew it was not.

That was precisely why Marek could leave the bell to set the pace unless Cassian met his new price.

He did not like it.

”One more condition,” Marek said. ”I withdraw the moment I see the first complete golden footprint. If you step onto the plate, I don’t press.”

”Afraid you’ll strand me on the far side?”

”Afraid you’ll say I stranded you on the far side.”

Marek’s right hand hung at his side.

Cassian needed only one step to grab it and force it onto the palm mark.

The thought came fast and ugly.

Even as he forced the impulse down, he felt his own fingers twitch.

But a hand forced to stay would not judge when the first footprint appeared—or when it was time to run.

Cassian opened his fingers.

”Deal.”

He returned to the inner side of the Chain Gate first and pressed his thumb to the darkened golden point.

Black-gold light shivered once.

The first relay’s warning was available again.

Then Cassian returned to the near-side palm mark and called up his final three points of Divine Essence.

Three points.

He could still leave every one of them inside his body and wait for the next piece of prey to come to him.

The Bell-Keeper still owed him his tension gauge and Orin’s name.

Cassian had not forgotten.

But if every piece of prey could calculate how long he needed to get here from the Gate, keeping those three points would only preserve a balance for the next time he arrived too late.

He drove the Divine Essence into the near-side palm mark.

Black-gold light seeped into the stone beneath his fingers and ran along the first road plate. It built no new road. It only formed a brief, thin link between the existing warning handprint and the near-side control.

Text unfolded before him.

[Dominion Allocation: 3.]

[Temporary Operators: 1.]

[After sounding the warning, the registered palm may lower the road once.]

[Cannot raise the road or transfer authority. Operator cleared after use.]

[Cassian: 0 available / 26 cumulative.]

The hollow of a zero balance settled into his chest.

Cassian stared for half a breath before lifting his hand.

A second palm outline had appeared beside the near-side mark, so faint it was almost invisible.

Not a new road.

Only an empty position.

”Right hand,” Cassian said.

Marek did not press it.

”Finish the terms.”

The bell rang a second time in the distance.

A pale golden reflection had already begun to gather along the edge of the first relay.

Cassian tightened his jaw.

”Go to the first relay. When you see the first complete footprint, press the warning, call stop, collect your rope, and come back. Once you reach the near side, press here with the same hand.”

He pointed to the faint palm outline.

”You lower it once. Raising it, resetting it, and granting the next authorization all stay with me.”

”What if you step onto the plate?”

”Don’t press.”

”I withdraw first.”

”That is the right you bargained back.”

Only then did Marek raise his right hand.

When his palm entered the shallow outline, black-gold light flashed once between his fingers.

[Temporary operator registered.]

There was no test.

Testing it once would burn the authorization on the spot. The bell beyond the second gap had no intention of waiting for them to confirm whether it worked.

Marek looped his short hemp rope back over his shoulder and stepped onto the black-gold plate alone.

Cassian remained on the near side.

There was never more than one person on the plate.

After reaching the first relay, Marek did not stand beside the shallow hollow left by the old marker. He chose an intact patch of stone closer to the return route, looped the short rope once around his own arm, and did not tie it to the warning bolt.

He raised a hand to show that he had his position.

Cassian turned and returned to the Chain Gate.

The moment his hand touched the broken-chain control, his right shoulder tightened.

His body knew exactly how to charge out when the warning came. His knee remembered the sharp pain of crossing the black-gold plate at speed.

There was no clean cloth left to bind the wound again.

But none of those were the hardest price.

The hardest part was leaving Marek outside his sight and closing the door himself.

Cassian pressed down on the broken chain.

The Chain Gate closed in front of him.

Veyra sat on the divine throne. She did not ask whether Marek would press.

She did not know either.

The road outside, the first relay, and the second gap had all vanished behind the broken chains. Veyra could hear no more than Cassian could.

When the bell rang a third time, the dark-gold point on the Chain Gate gave a faint tremor.

Not the warning yet.

Cassian’s right hand closed around the control rod.

He had kept an exit open for himself.

If the warning came and the road did not fall, he would open the Gate. If Marek had not returned to the near side, Cassian would not raise the road. Once the underground dawn tide receded, he would personally reset every palm mark.

He could calculate all of that.

What he could not calculate was the exact moment Marek would choose to withdraw.

Thud.

The first relay’s warning struck the Chain Gate.

Cassian had already pushed the control rod down an inch.

His knee loaded. His right shoulder pulled tight with it. One more fraction and the broken chains would rise. He could drag every part of this back within his sight.

He stopped.

One breath.

There was no sound outside.

A second breath.

Veins stood out across the back of Cassian’s hand.

He remembered that after pressing the warning, Marek still had to collect his rope, cross the entire black-gold plate, and press the near-side mark with the same hand.

He also remembered that the Bell-Keeper left only one footprint beneath each step.

The third breath had barely begun when a heavy vibration pressed through the stone passage beyond the Gate.

It was not the warning’s muffled knock.

Deeper.

Heavier.

As if the entire road had drawn a single breath beneath the earth.

Pebbles fell from beneath the Chain Gate.

The first black-gold road plate had sunk.

Cassian held the control rod. The hollow that his empty balance had left in his chest was suddenly filled by that weight.

This time, the first thing to reach the first relay was not him.

It was his order.

He smiled, but his fingers never loosened around the rod.

Cassian pressed the control down.

The Chain Gate rose.

Marek was already standing beside the near-side palm mark, breathing harder than usual, his right hand still pressed to the stone. The black-gold light beneath his fingers was fading.

The short hemp rope hung from his shoulder.

Both hands were still there.

”What did you see?” Cassian asked.

”The first complete footprint.” Marek lifted his right hand. ”Pressed the warning. Called stop. Collected the rope, came back, then lowered the road. All done.”

”You earned the action fee.”

Marek nodded and stepped away from the palm mark.

Cassian looked past him toward the broken span.

The first black-gold plate had dropped completely into the underground dawnlight. The first relay hung above the golden depths like a block of black stone cut away from everything around it.

The Bell-Keeper was approaching from the direction of the second gap.

By the time it stepped onto the first relay, the near-side road was already submerged in the underground dawnlight.

The gray-white mask looked first at the broken span, then at Cassian.

Cassian stood at the near-side control, not on the first relay.

The broken span offered no answer as to when the road had fallen or which hand had pressed the control.

The functioning bone bell did not rise.

The Bell-Keeper paused, then turned and withdrew toward the second gap with the ebbing dawn tide.

Cassian waited until the underground dawn tide had fully receded before placing his own hand on the near-side control.

The black-gold plate slowly rose from the depths and locked against the first relay.

Marek did not approach.

The interface unfolded after the plate settled.

[Manual Authorization Slot: Retained.]

[Temporary Operator: Empty.]

Cassian studied the second line.

Three points of Dominion had not bought Marek for the day.

They had bought a slot he could fill again.

The day’s account was settled outside the Chain Gate.

Lost time. Entry. Lowering the road.

Three payments. Not one missing.

Marek counted the money and slipped it into his pocket.

”This round is over.”

”The next one?” Cassian asked.

”Depends whether I already have other work.”

Marek retied the short hemp rope.

”Someone is still waiting for those two crates today.”

”I already paid for the time you lost.”

”Which is why I’m going to earn the rest now.”

Marek put the blindfold back on and left the true entrance. Cassian personally escorted him through the final stretch, then returned and closed the Chain Gate.

Afterward, he walked back to the near-side palm mark.

The road was raised.

The warning awaited another reset.

The faint palm outline held neither Marek’s hand nor the next person’s name.

The first relay stood empty again.

Cassian slowly ran his thumb across the empty outline.

Next time, he would not be buying a single entry.

He would make staying to guard this position worth more than taking another job elsewhere.
