SSS Awakening: I Can Devour Gods to Evolve My Goddesses

Chapter 20: While Rowan Dismantled the Box, Cassian Held His First Watchpost

”The blank tag moved.”

Marek’s voice came back from the first relay.

Cassian looked up at once.

”How?”

”The gray-white cord came back. It went through the old hole, pulled outward first, then slackened inward.”

Heat flared in Cassian’s chest.

The live line he had cut had not returned on its own. The blank tag he had put back had made the other side reach this way again.

”What else?”

”There’s something on the cord,” Marek said. ”Palm-sized. Gray-white shell. Six hooked legs. It’s climbing up the line.”

The heat in Cassian’s stomach sank, but it did not disappear.

He had hooked something.

Only his catch was now climbing along the bait line toward the first relay.

”Is its whole body up?”

”All of it. Nothing behind it but the cord.”

Marek suddenly raised one hand.

”Stop.”

Cassian’s hand was already on the bent broken-chain blade.

”What is it doing?”

”Leaving the blank tag. Moving toward the iron marker.”

A faint scrape came from the stone.

The ordinary Graystone iron marker remained wedged beside the seam. Rowan’s thunder-spear seal faced inward. On the other side were the two lines Cassian had carved himself.

Hostile divinity was his to handle first. Names and old military records stayed sealed and could not be taken outside.

”Its front legs are scraping the edge,” Marek said. ”The part it touched is turning white.”

Cassian’s jaw tightened hard.

The blank tag was a hook. Yet the thing that had taken it wanted to use that hook to turn the first relay into its own possession.

”Keep watching” had already reached the tip of his tongue.

Another half-breath might show him how all six legs carried weight, or whether there was a gap in the shell. The price was keeping Marek closest to it.

If Marek had the right to call a stop, then the call had to count.

”Report its final position,” Cassian said. ”Take down your short hemp rope. Come back.”

”Whole body on solid stone. Two steps from the iron marker. The gray-white cord is still connected to the second gap.”

Marek bent, untied the short hemp rope from the warning bolt, looped the entire coil over his shoulder, then stepped onto the black-gold plate alone.

The gray-white thing did not pursue him. It kept scraping the iron marker.

When Marek reached the near side, Cassian did not let him stay.

”Go wait at the Chain Gate.”

”This trip still counts?”

”It counts.”

Marek nodded and retreated toward the closed Gate with his short hemp rope intact.

Cassian stepped onto the black-gold plate.

Underground dawnlight rose through the broken seams. His right shoulder tightened with every step, and pain throbbed through his knee. A small patch along the iron marker’s edge had already turned pale.

The palm-sized bone body crouched low against the stone.

Six hooked legs spread along its sides. The front pair were lodged through the old hole in the blank tag. The gray-white cord trailing behind it held no divine gleam. It was only an ordinary tether pulling the thing back.

One corner above the iron marker’s first line had already been scraped white.

Cassian’s name and both lines were still legible, but the pale scar kept eating inward.

Cassian stopped on the inner side of the solid stone.

The entire thing was ashore. Solid stone lay beneath and behind him. Its only remaining retreat was the gray-white cord at its tail.

He could cut the cord now and let it retreat along the broken edge. At least that would save the marker.

That was damage control.

The risk was still affordable. Cassian had no intention of settling for the minimum return. The monster was not leaving, and neither was the iron marker.

Cassian tightened his grip on the bent broken-chain blade.

The bone body suddenly turned.

The gray-white cord behind it snapped taut.

War Instinct I drove a broken half-beat into Cassian’s mind.

He reached for the shell. One hooked leg wound around his wrist. The outward pull tore through his right shoulder and dragged him over the stone edge.

His palm went cold.

Cassian did not touch it.

He stepped half a pace inward and confirmed that solid stone still lay behind his heel.

When he did not approach, the thing turned back toward the iron marker. Its two front legs passed through the old hole and lifted the ordinary copper tag.

Its whole body shifted another step inward with it.

The gray-white cord scraped over the stone edge until it shone.

Now.

Cassian activated Predator Step I.

He burst a short distance inward across solid stone and brought his boot down hard on the raised blank tag.

His knee felt as though an iron spike had punched through it.

His right shoulder went numb and taut at the impact.

But his weight was already planted on the inner side, and the tag trapped the two hooked legs threaded through its hole.

The gray-white cord ripped backward.

The bone body slammed against the edge of Cassian’s boot, but it could not make it back to the broken edge.

Cassian bent and brought the broken-chain blade down just behind its shell.

The first stroke severed most of the cord.

The outer line pulled taut again.

The second stroke finished it.

The gray-white cord parted.

The outer section flickered across the stone and recoiled into the darkness toward the second gap.

The bone body remained whole beneath Cassian’s foot.

All six hooked legs spread at once.

One ripped Cassian’s coat. Two more still snapped toward the iron marker.

Cassian pinned it sideways with the bent broken-chain blade.

”You came for my position.”

The iron hammer in his left hand fell.

The first blow caved in the shell. The second broke two hooked legs.

Gray-white light spilled from the cracks, while the remaining legs still clawed for the stone edge. Cassian did not look for a core. He gave it no path back.

His boot held the blank tag. His blade held the bone body. His hammer kept falling until all six legs stopped and the gray-white light went out.

Cassian did not lift his foot at once. No severed limb lay beyond the broken edge. All of the hostile divinity remained on his side.

Cassian unleashed Divine Devourer.

Black-gold patterns spread from beneath the broken-chain blade and pierced the entire gray-white body.

Shell, hooked legs, and the final trace of divinity within them collapsed at once. Not a single fragment remained.

Scalding power surged through Cassian’s lower leg and into his chest.

[Complete hostile divinity devoured.]

[Divine Essence: +4]

[Cassian: 8 available / 26 cumulative]

Eight points.

Cassian closed his eyes for a moment.

Rich heat settled heavily in his chest.

The blank tag had drawn it in. Marek’s eyes had sent the danger back. Cassian’s feet, blade, and hammer had turned it into four points of capital.

Cassian gave a low laugh and let all eight belong to him for a moment.

Only then did he look at the iron marker.

The white scar stopped at the corner. Both carved lines were still clear. The first relay had been touched by an enemy for the first time—and, for the first time, it had not been taken.

Cassian returned to the near side alone and found Marek before the closed Chain Gate.

”Finished?” Marek asked.

”Finished.”

Cassian paid the agreed price for this entry, manually opened the Gate, and escorted him through the true entrance.

Marek did not ask what the thing had been worth or whether he deserved credit. He only checked that the short hemp rope remained on his shoulder, then turned away to take work elsewhere.

The eyes were paid. The prey belonged to Cassian. The account was clean.

Back at the Shrine, Cassian described the shell, the hooked legs, the ordinary tether, and the white scar on the iron marker one by one.

Veyra’s gray-gold eyes cooled when she heard that six hooked legs had passed through the blank tag’s old hole.

”An Ashbone Claim-Weaver.”

”Who sent it?”

”I don’t know.”

”On old battlefields, they followed unclaimed carriers into watchposts. First they scraped the markers white. Then they dragged them into Ashbone custody.”

”Does it prove the Bell-Keeper is still pulling the line?”

”No.”

They had gained no name, location, or operator. But the first relay had undeniably been attacked.

Veyra looked toward the closed Chain Gate.

”By the time Marek brings the full report back, the enemy is already on the post.”

”He saw it in advance.”

”Seeing it is not the same as holding the post.”

Cassian did not like that.

The white scar on the marker proved she was right.

He called up the eight points of Divine Essence he had just gained.

Eight points felt good in his hands. Spend five now, and he would have only three left. The satisfaction filling his chest immediately shrank by more than half.

But if the eyes still had to shout and then walk all the way back, the warning would always be one step behind the danger.

”Five points. Two purchases,” Cassian said. ”Two into Covenant—your banner lasts one more heartbeat. Three into Dominion—someone presses once at the first relay, and the Chain Gate sounds once.”

Black-gold text unfolded between them.

[Investment: 2 Covenant / 3 Dominion.]

[Covenant investment requires Veyra’s consent.]

Veyra did not agree at once.

”The banner still stays inside the Shrine?”

”It stays there. Only one extra heartbeat,” Cassian said. ”I will ask you again next time.”

”I consent to these two points only.”

”Begin.”

Cassian released the Divine Essence.

Two points sank into Veyra. Three entered the closed Chain Gate.

The Eclipse Chains tightened slightly.

Veyra raised her right hand.

The incomplete Eclipse War Banner unfurled behind the divine seat.

One heartbeat.

Two.

Five.

The fifth heartbeat passed, but the banner’s shadow did not disperse.

Veyra looked at the black-gold corner still hanging in the air. She did not lower her hand.

The sixth heartbeat passed.

Only then did the black-gold corner begin to crumble from the edge.

At the same moment, a thumb-sized dark-gold point appeared on the inner face of the closed Chain Gate.

It gave no light and carried no image. It only trembled faintly when Cassian touched it.

[Covenant Investment: 2]

[Veyra: 6/24 → 8/24]

[Dominion Investment: 3]

[Cassian: 3 available / 26 cumulative]

The territory remained F-tier. The banner was still confined to the Shrine, and it had gained no new attack.

The five points had not vanished. Two had become one heartbeat that Veyra held the banner aloft herself. Three had become one warning that still had to be triggered by a living hand.

On the next paid watch, Cassian manually opened the Gate and sent Marek to the first relay.

Cassian remained inside the closed Chain Gate.

”Press it,” he said.

Marek placed his palm against the new black-gold handprint beside the iron marker.

Thud.

A single muffled knock sounded from the Gate’s inner face.

No name. No direction. Only one sound.

The dark-gold point on the Gate dimmed at once. Cassian pressed it with his thumb, and only then did its faint vibration return.

One warning. One reset. Enough.

Cassian paid for the entry in full and personally escorted Marek back through the Gate. Marek remained free to refuse the next one.

But as long as one living person stood at the first relay, Cassian could hear the instant something happened there even while he was elsewhere.

Later that day, the Newcomer Divine Essence Ranking updated its public fields.

[Rank 1: Cassian Vale]

[Territory Tier: F]

[Cumulative Divine Essence: 26]

Graystone was still empty.

No anonymous item had entered the chain of custody Rowan had purchased. Before nightfall, a completion notice arrived.

[Graystone advance custody declaration withdrawn.]

[Old shed and box to be dismantled tonight.]

[If anything worth discussing comes up in the future, bring it to me yourself.]

No threat. No new offer.

Rowan had simply stopped paying for the wrong position. At twenty-two points, the anonymous reading, the old box, and the public increase in Cassian’s total had been enough for him to place a bet. At twenty-six, with the box still empty, it was clear this door would not catch Cassian’s next valuable find.

The old shed could be dismantled, but the drop point covered by the thunder-spear seal could never become neutral again. And the time Rowan had spent there had already fallen behind Cassian’s new watchpost.

Cassian looked at the three-line notice.

Rowan was still richer and stronger. He could afford to discard a mistaken position. Cassian still allowed himself to enjoy the moment.

Rowan was dismantling a box that had waited for something that never came.

And Cassian’s Chain Gate had just heard the first knock from the first relay.

There were still no walls, soldiers, or automatic defenses there.

Marek could watch. One press could send the warning back. But when the post truly needed defending, Cassian still had to get there himself.

Cassian did not reply to Rowan.

Next time, he wanted more than a warning.

He wanted that position to slow whatever approached before he arrived.

So that when someone stronger drew near, the first question they faced would be—

Who gave them permission to take another step?
