SSS Awakening: I Can Devour Gods to Evolve My Goddesses

Chapter 15: By the Time He Approved It, the Opportunity Was Gone

Toren had left only one requirement: take three readings with a tension gauge before dawn.

The Bell-Keeper had carried off Cassian’s original gauge. He needed to borrow another one of the same kind before Toren could finish the correction.

That gauge was now on the far side of the second gap.

Just like Orin.

Cassian’s gaze settled on the empty slot in the black-gold case.

”I want the gauge back,” he said. ”Orin too.”

Veyra’s fingers stopped at the edge of the empty slot.

She did not urge him to give chase. Nor did she tell him not to.

”Don’t let an ordinary tool decide when we next meet the Bell-Keeper.”

Cassian folded Toren’s note.

Reentering an ancient road with unknown rules for the sake of one gauge was too expensive. The timing of their next encounter with the Bell-Keeper had to be his decision.

Veyra did not move her hand from Orin’s empty slot. She wanted Orin back too. She simply refused to use his name to push Cassian into a bad pursuit.

Cassian liked that.

They both remembered what was still owed. Neither of them would let attachment bid in their place.

He sent Marek’s second and final prepaid task through the dead drop on the graystone slope.

Borrow one tension gauge. Report the price, collateral, and handoff method first. Make no commitment without confirmation.

Half a day later, the reply contained only three lines.

[FIRST GAUGE FOUND. PRICE WITHIN LIMIT.]

[WHILE WAITING FOR CONFIRMATION, A CREW RESERVED BY ROWAN TOOK IT.]

[OPPORTUNITY LOST.]

Marek had found the opportunity.

Cassian had ordered him to wait for confirmation.

By the time Cassian gave his approval, the opportunity was already gone.

Cassian clenched the note. His first reaction was that this could not be how the job worked.

His pen was about to touch the paper when he saw the line he himself had written.

[MAKE NO COMMITMENT WITHOUT CONFIRMATION.]

Marek had not delayed.

He had followed the instruction exactly.

Cassian crossed out the entire line.

The new note contained only four requirements: obtain a tension gauge; expose no names or locations; create no debt for Cassian and sell no future rights; return it before dawn.

The price ceiling remained.

How Marek achieved the result was his decision. He no longer had to wait for a reply.

After pushing the paper into the crevice, Cassian wanted to add one last sentence.

At least notify me before deciding.

He did not reach for the note.

That would only be another way of writing, Wait for my approval.

Handing away the decision did not make waiting comfortable.

Cassian had simply calculated that comfort was not worth half a day.

Night had settled over Ashen March when a heavy cloth bundle appeared in the dead drop.

Inside was a tension gauge and Marek’s settlement note.

The second gauge belonged to another hauling crew. Rowan had purchased their time starting the next morning, but not tonight. Buying the gauge outright exceeded Cassian’s ceiling, so Marek had rented it for a single night.

Beyond the rental fee, he had pledged his own cart as collateral.

If the gauge was not returned before dawn, the other party kept the cart. Marek—not Cassian—would be the one left without a cart and unable to take his next job.

Cassian checked the return deadline first.

There was only most of one night to carry the gauge from the dead drop, complete three tests, and send it back. Any delay along the way would leave Marek standing beside an empty space while other carriers took the next day’s work.

Cassian would not absorb that loss for him. Nor would he pay one extra copper because of it.

But he knew exactly who bore the cost.

It was not gratitude.

What rose afterward was excitement.

Rowan had bought this crew’s tomorrow.

Marek had rented tonight’s tension gauge for Cassian.

Rowan’s order remained valid, but Marek had carved out one night before the blockade began.

One final condition waited at the bottom of the settlement note. The tension gauge printed two paper strips for every test. One returned with the gauge and remained with its owner.

The price was visible before Cassian used it.

He disliked it, but he did not stop. Three lines of anonymous data in exchange for Toren’s correction still fell within the loss he had permitted.

Cassian carried the gauge to the eastern near side. He connected it only to the existing winch and coarse steel cable. He did not touch the final unused formal rock bolt, and no one crossed the Chain Gate.

On the first light pull, the needle trembled. Two paper strips pushed out together, each carrying a short black line.

Halfway through the second pull, a sharp crack came from the near side.

The coarse cable snapped backward half a foot. The needle kicked violently upward.

Cassian turned his body and bled off the force. The old wound in his right shoulder cinched tight.

He checked the rock bolt first. It had not moved.

Then he looked toward the distant black-gold plate. Its surface remained shut. Nothing had broken.

The aftershock ran up the winch handle and jolted the bones in his palm. The black lines on both paper strips rose at once, like a spike suddenly thrust into view.

That was enough.

If a real heavy load had been on the plate, he would have needed to control the near-side winch while watching for the first relay to loosen. Every turn of his head could leave him half a beat too late.

Cassian adjusted his stance and completed the third light pull.

The reading stabilized.

He stopped immediately.

He already had the answer. One more test would only make the rock bolt and his shoulder pay for his curiosity.

The tension gauge was back before dawn. Marek’s cart was released.

Toren finished the correction before leaving Ashen March the next morning. At noon, Marek delivered it to the dead drop on the graystone slope.

The page held no long explanation. It gave only two required actions.

One person could not turn the near-side winch and see when the first relay began to loosen at the same time.

Before any formal transport, there had to be a second pair of eyes at the far relay and another fixed anchor point.

Cassian read it twice.

The first pair of eyes controlled the force. The second decided when to call for a stop. Without either one, a stronger winch would only make the mistake arrive faster.

The correction had not built him a transport line.

It had preserved his last rock bolt and kept his next prize from proving him wrong in the middle of the black-gold plate.

Cassian liked this answer.

It was specific. Valuable. And it told him exactly what he lacked.

Then he saw the last line on Marek’s settlement note.

The paper strip retained by the owner would enter the crew Rowan had reserved along with the gauge.

The data was not proof. But Rowan already knew Cassian needed heavy transport. For a man with money, that hint was enough reason to prepare early.

Marek had chosen to rent the gauge. The strip left behind was part of that same choice.

Cassian could not take Toren’s correction and then charge the paper strip’s risk to Marek alone.

It was not a pretty account.

It was still clear enough to settle.

Cassian’s first reaction was that the task could not be counted as complete.

His pen pressed toward the settlement line, then stopped before the ink landed.

He checked the boundary he had drawn.

No name or location had gone out. No debt, future right, or permission to enter the site had been sold. The gauge had returned on time, and Toren’s answer was already in front of him.

Marek had chosen a method Cassian might not have chosen.

But he had not crossed Cassian’s boundary.

So the result had to count.

The pen came down.

[COMPLETE.]

Cassian did not thank him. He did not extend the agreement or praise Marek for risking his cart.

Both prepaid tasks were now settled. Marek was not his subordinate, and one night of collateral had not made him loyal.

But Cassian remembered that cart.

For the first time, an independent man had judged Cassian’s objective worth a real risk and completed it where Cassian could not see.

Not because Marek believed in him. Not because one command had carried enough authority.

Cassian had offered a price and a boundary that made a man with his own livelihood decide the gamble was worth taking.

Cassian had gone to the graystone slope himself. He had collected the gauge and returned it to the dead drop before dawn.

That was a handoff. It was not negotiating in Marek’s place.

From borrowing the gauge to pledging and reclaiming the cart, Cassian had not stood beside a single negotiation. He had not issued one additional command.

The result had still followed the boundary he drew and returned to the Chain Gate.

That satisfaction was colder than loyalty.

It suited him better.

Veyra finished reading the correction. Her gaze rested on the last two lines.

”What Toren needs is a pair of eyes that can judge for themselves.”

”So what you’re missing isn’t a second rock bolt,” she said.

”It’s a second person.”

Cassian looked toward the closed Chain Gate.

”Outsiders cannot enter.”
