With a flicker in her eyes, Wen Ran retorted, “How could that be? Am I such a wicked woman?”

She sat next to MO Xiuchen, watching him put a piece of winter melon into his mouth, and immediately asked, “How’s the taste of the winter melon? Try the ribs, then have some soup.”

MO Xiuchen smiled gently, “Did you make this soup?”

“Quite perceptive!”

Wen Ran raised her brows in pride, “Tonight’s meal, I cooked everything, including this soup. My brother and Older Brother Gu both said it was delicious. ”

At her words, MO Xiuchen stopped laughing, his handsome eyebrows slightly furrowing, “Did Gu Kai also eat it?”

Wen Ran grinned and brought a spoonful of soup to his lips, saying lightly, “I made plenty. When sending food to my brother, I prepared an extra portion. Older Brother Gu always takes care of my brother—it’s only right that I show some gratitude.”

“I heard that you visited him yesterday!”

MO Xiuchen’s gaze deepened as he looked at Wen Ran. He’d been busy lately and hadn’t known about Wen Ran’s visits to Gu Kai. It was only tonight that Cheng Jia had called to inform him.

A flash of surprise crossed Wen Ran’s eyes before she masked it with a laugh, saying, “MO Xiuchen, I have something important to tell you.”

“What is it?”

Seeing her change the topic, MO Xiuchen went along, not further probing her visits to Gu Kai. He took the spoon from her hand, savoring the soup that she had brought to his lips. It was fragrant, not greasy, and tasted excellent.

Wen Ran pressed her lips together, putting the spoon back in the bowl. After retelling her brother’s reaction, she said, “Promise you won’t get angry after hearing it. ”

MO Xiuchen glanced at her for a moment before agreeing, “Alright, I won’t get angry.”

With that assurance, Wen Ran relaxed and confessed, “On the day Cheng Jia was injured, I met Xiao Wenqing at the Yi Pin Xuan Pavilion.”

She spoke slowly, discreetly observing MO Xiuchen’s expression. At the mention of Xiao Wenqing’s name, his demeanor subtly shifted. He glanced at her, signaling for her to continue, as he elegantly began nibbling on a rib.

First, Wen Ran declared, “I originally refused her. But she insisted on waiting for me. Given her status as your father’s wife, I didn’t want to slight her, so I went. She ordered a few dishes, including a serving of shark fin soup. During the meal, I received a call from Big Brother Chen, telling me not to drink the shark fin soup.”

MO Xiuchen suddenly looked up at Wen Ran, a sharp glint in his eyes, “Was there something wrong with the shark fin soup?”

“I managed to bring back the shark fin soup and had Older Brother Gu analyze it. At first glance, he only saw musk in it. But upon further testing, there were several other types of medicine.”

“Did Gu Kai analyze it?”

MO Xiuchen’s handsome face paled, his voice heavy.

The cold aura emanating from him gave Wen Ran a chill, prompting her to explain instinctively, “I asked him not to tell you or my brother. I wanted to wait until we figured it out before letting you guys know. MO Xiuchen, you promised not to get angry just now.”

The force MO Xiuchen exerted on his chopsticks increased significantly, a shadow descending in his eyes. He was no fool. Wen Ran had only spilled the beans about the musk, leaving him to guess the functions of the other drugs.

Xiao Wenqing, she really was ruthless.

She failed to harm him in the past, and now she wanted to hurt the woman he loved.

His eyes changed color several times within seconds, the frosty air surrounding him almost freezing the dining room. Wen Ran chose to remain quiet, not daring to say another word.

The chill he radiated made her terribly uncomfortable, though it wasn’t directed at her.

Time seemed to stand still.

After what felt like an eternity, Wen Ran timidly reached for the hand that was on the verge of breaking the chopsticks, whispering, “MO Xiuchen!”

MO Xiuchen let out a deep breath, the icy menace in his eyes gradually fading. When he looked at her again, his gaze had returned to a softer intensity. The words escaping his lips were slightly hoarse, “I’m not mad at you.”

The person who had narrowly avoided harm was her. How could he be angry at her? Even though she didn’t tell him immediately, he had no right to be angry.

When Xiao Wenqing made her move, he was outside the operating room, looking after another woman.

A portion of Wen Ran’s heart warmed, even as a twinge of bitter resentment bloomed. She placed her other hand on his, barely wrapping around it, remorsefully saying, “I should’ve waited until you finished eating before telling you.”

MO Xiuchen’s lips twitched into a small smile. Patting her hand, he evenly replied, “It’s rare that you cooked—for that, I should finish the meal.”

Gently releasing Wen Ran’s hand, he resumed eating. If Wen Ran hadn’t seen it earlier, she would’ve never believed that he’d been so ominously dark and frosty just two minutes ago.

As she watched him calmly eat and occasionally compliment her cooking, a tender feeling quietly welled up in her heart.

Throughout the meal, MO Xiuchen never again alluded to the shark fin soup, as if Wen Ran never mentioned it to begin with.

After finishing their meal, Wen Ran stood up to clean the dishes. However, he stopped her, gently saying, “You’ve already done plenty by cooking. Leave the rest to me. Go back to the room; I’ll be up soon.”

By the end of his sentence, his gaze held a hint of ambiguity. Upon hearing this, a blush swept over Wen Ran’s cheeks. She glared at him, threw out a quick, “You wash, I’m going to bed!” before running out of the dining room.

After some passionate lovemaking, Wen Ran drifted off into a deep sleep.

MO Xiuchen cleaned her up before bringing her back to bed. He carefully pulled his arm from around her neck and covered her with a blanket. He gazed at her tenderly for a while before picking up his phone and going into a neighboring study.

The fact that Xiao Wenqing was already making her move on Wen Ran was something MO Xiuchen had not expected.

Closing the study door, his gaze instantly grew colder, and a storm seemed to gather over his handsome features. He dialed a number on his phone and strode to the desk.

The phone rang several times before the person on the other end answered. Gu

Kai’s voice, still tinged with sleepiness, gave a groggy, “Hello!”

“What other ingredients were there in the shark fin soup apart from musk?”

The cold, deep voice on the other end instantly dispelled the last traces of Gu Kai’s drowsiness. Taken aback, his voice was completely alert when it came through again.

Afraid to skip a beat, Gu Kai listed the names of a few drugs. He added, “The day Wen Ran came to me coincided with Cheng Jia’s operation. Considering Cheng Jia’s situation, she didn’t want to worry you further and asked me not to tell you.”

“I know, I don’t blame her.”

MO Xiuchen’s tone was cold, directed not at her, but at himself. It was because he’d gotten her involved that Xiao Wenqing had attempted such a poisonous attack..
