Chapter 2190: Chapter 2188: Drinking Alone Under the Moon

Although these words sounded polite, they inevitably carried a hint of provocation, as if saying: Can Tang Champion show us your skills to see if you deserve the title of Champion?

”What is the name of the person speaking, junior I can’t remember clearly, he has a kinship relationship with the Champion Jian Dan from two years ago.” Gao Zhou’s voice came from the side.

Bai Ruozhu understood in his heart, this is Jian Dan being unhappy with Tang Feng and setting a trap for him.

But it’s just composing poetry on the spot, what kind of trap could it be?

Tang Feng stepped forward and said with a smile: ”Since Brother Lin has spoken, Tang will show his inferior skills.”

The person speaking rolled his eyes and said: ”With Tang Champion’s talent, simply composing poetry is uninteresting, how about choosing a topic to increase the difficulty?”

”How to choose a topic?” Tang Feng patiently asked.

That person rolled his eyes, pointed at the wine the maid brought forward and said: ”Let’s take this wine as the topic, what does Tang Champion think?”

Tang Feng furrowed his brows slightly, but quickly relaxed, ”Alright, as Brother Lin wishes.”

Many people caught the momentary frown of Tang Feng and began to ponder, perhaps Tang Feng didn’t have any good ideas about wine being the topic, could he be embarrassed today?

Many people became excited, after all Tang Feng was not from this country, many did not admire him, some even felt xenophobic.

Soon Tang Feng picked up a pen and began writing on paper, his movements were graceful, his demeanor exceptional, making many unable to help but exclaim in admiration.

No matter how the poem turned out, just this demeanor alone commanded their respect.

Writing flowed like a river from the tip of his pen, almost filling a page entirely.

Nearby, a scholar accompanying him couldn’t help but recite aloud.

”If heaven didn’t love wine, stars of wine wouldn’t be heaven-bound. If earth didn’t love wine, the earth shouldn’t have springs of wine. Heaven and earth love wine, unashamed is love of wine before heaven. Already known how clarity compares to saintliness, vapidity speaks as virtuous. Virtuous and saintly already drink, why seek from the immortal? Three cups connect to the main road, a measure aligns with nature. May the fun within wine exist, not to be shared with the sober.”

Reciting to the end, the person speaking became somewhat excited, raising his voice unintentionally.

”Good, what a delight in the fun within wine, not to be shared with the sober,” another person laughed heartily nearby, ”Unexpectedly, Tang Champion is also a lover of wine, the poem is excellent, too excellent!”

”Such momentum inspired me to drink three hundred cups as well.”

”Haha, three hundred cups would have you drunk to death, I’m cautious, just wishing for a good drunk is enough.”

Amidst the resounding praises, Lin Yu, who was seeking trouble, did not seem pleased, saying: ”Tang Champion’s poem is good, yet the tone is somewhat arrogant, isn’t it?”

Instantly the discussion declined a bit, Lin Yu was clearly picking a quarrel, just to see how Tang Feng would respond.

Tang Feng replied calmly: ”All are young lads, after drinking such is the tone, may the fun within wine exist, not to be shared with the sober, if Brother Lin dislikes, wait until a few cups down before considering this poem again.”

Many people laughed, as if the meaning within the poem, only with fellow drinkers could the fun within wine be shared, Lin Yu thinks it’s arrogant, showing he does not understand the fun within wine.

Lin Yu, with anger turning his face ashen, wanted to argue further, but receiving an eye signal from Jian Dan nearby, he had to sit back down, drink a harsh sip of tea.

Resulting in the scalding tea burning his tongue, almost spitting it out, but in such occasion, how could he lose composure like that, he could only grit his teeth, slowly waiting for the tea to cool before swallowing.

Bai Ruozhu softly said to Gao Zhou and Jianqi: ”Look, that person had his tongue scalded by hot tea, isn’t this retribution?”

She laughed and shook her head saying that Lin Yu, with such character and intellect, attempting to plot against Tang Feng, simply was asking for suffering himself.

But why had Tang Feng chosen this poem by Li Bai?

As far as she knew, Tang Feng had used some ancient poems when he was young, afterwards mostly composing his own poems, he was somewhat proud and unwilling to rely on ancient poems for success. Using this poem today certainly wouldn’t just be because he didn’t have a good one on hand, right?

Looking at it this way, the most likely possibility is because of her.

Only by referring to ancient poems could let her, as a ”fellow villager,” guess the meaning within.

Gao Zhou thought the same, mumbling aside: ”Drinking alone under the moon.”

This poem is the second in the ”Drinking alone under the moon,” the very famous poem by Li Bai ”A pot a wine amidst flowers, drinking alone without companion. Raising the cup to invite the bright moon, with shadow forming a trio,” following three others to form the four-poem set ”Drinking alone under the moon.”

Bai Ruozhu thought carefully, felt Tang Feng’s choice contained no hidden meaning, which made it hard to see, hence his intended meaning should be in the other three poems.

The first one seemed similar to Tang Feng’s situation at the moment, lonely without friends, drinking alone under the moon, not even having freedom.

Yet what he intended to express specifically, Bai Ruozhu had no way to determine, nor dared to divert attention, temporarily pressing it down, returning to ponder carefully.

This moment, someone reported Princess Fu’an’s arrival.

The crowd stood, Bai Ruozhu included, to perform ceremonial greetings. Princess Fu’an approached gracefully with her maids, smiling lightly and said: ”You all, no need for excessive courtesy, please continue sitting.”

”Princess, Consort composed a poem.” A maid happily reminded while passing Tang Feng’s poem to Princess Fu’an.

Bai Ruozhu watched from afar, Princess Fu’an did not bring Jian Dan among her maids today, probably avoiding suspicion, after all there were rumors about her not being clear with Jian Dan.

Princess Fu’an accepted the poem and began reading aloud, her face blossomed into a smile quickly, ”Certainly a good poem, Consort is also a lover of wine.”

Tang Feng slightly stiffened his expression, and then bowed saying: ”Princess praises me excessively.”

People below displayed envious expressions, but Bai Ruozhu knew those attending the Poetry and Literature Convention would respect Tang Feng, calling him ”Tang Champion,” rather than ”Tang Consort.” But the frequent mention of ”Consort” by Princess Fu’an, not just signifying the deep affection between husband and wife, more so was a reminder for Tang Feng to remember his identity.

Princess Fu’an’s face still maintained a graceful dignified smile, saying: ”I just passed by to join the fun, there’s still a poetry contest later, I fear my presence binds hands and feet, I leave a prize, then take my leave.”

The maid opened the gift box, revealing a Glaze Tea Set, Princess Fu’an smiled saying: ”Knowing Consort wrote of wine earlier, should have been a set of wine vessels.”

Tang Feng bowed, received the gift box saying: ”Troubling the Princess, this prize is truly rare.”

Bai Ruozhu couldn’t help but giggle, Tang Feng must also be secretly laughing while saying these words.

To the people of this time, Glaze was considered precious due to difficult craftsmanship, Glaze items most often imported from the Western side. But to modern people, isn’t it just a collection of artificial crystals, not much different from glass.

Additionally, with the limited craftsmanship of the time, though the Glaze Tea Set’s color was brilliant, it wasn’t translucent, didn’t even match up to modern colored glass cups.
