Rebirth: General, Don't Mess Around!

Grandpa Xia mentioned on the phone, and Old Man Xia wasn’t surprised at all. The two young people had been talking for years, and it was completely reasonable for them to get engaged now. It’s just that, well...

Deep down there was still a reluctance to let go.

Once engaged, in a few years, they would get married, and once married, his granddaughter would become another family’s daughter-in-law.

No matter how well-off the Xia family was, the thought of his granddaughter marrying away always left a sour feeling in his heart, and it hurt.

Ye Jian could see the reluctance and heartache hidden in the Old Man’s smile. She gently hugged his arm and said in a soft voice, ”He mentioned it to me yesterday, but I didn’t agree. I wanted to ask for your and Dad’s opinions first.”

She spoke very cautiously, and that kind of careful prudence brought both comfort and pain to the Old Man. This child was always so considerate of the family, even at the expense of her own happiness.

”When your Dad comes back, we’ll discuss this matter properly. It’s a big issue and needs to be carefully considered. Your brother, yes, we need to wait for your brother to return as well, so the whole family can discuss it together.” Although the Old Man was reluctant, the Xia family’s Little Six was a talented young man and a worthy candidate for her to entrust her life to, so settling things early wasn’t necessarily a bad thing.

Gently patting the back of Ye Jian’s hand, he said, ”Silly child, in front of Grandpa, you can say whatever you want. You don’t need to worry about Grandpa; whatever you do, Grandpa will support you.”

”You and Little Six have been together for so long now, getting engaged is good. Our two families can also feel more at ease. Little Six is a good kid, responsible and loving towards you. With you and Little Six together, Grandpa is reassured.”

Ye Jian’s eyes reddened, and she nodded obediently.

In the afternoon, Ye Jian accompanied the Old Man to visit Old Master Qin at the Qin family. Having just returned from the hospital, Old Master Qin appeared spirited and said to Old Man Xia, ”You have no idea how miserable the doctor was. I would rather lie at home than be willing to go to the hospital again.”

”You old fool! What kind of talk is that during the New Year!” Old Madam, who had just relaxed, changed color in her face upon hearing the old master’s words. To come out of the hospital only to talk about lying down again was an uncomfortable thought to hear.

She slapped Old Master Qin’s shoulder forcefully and said to Ye Jian, ”Your Grandpa Qin here can really wear people out. The doctors and nurses were all at their wits’ end with him. It’s better now he’s back, so he won’t be troubling others.”

”What do you mean, ’won’t trouble others?’ I dislike troubling others the most. Clearly, I said yesterday to discharge me quickly, but it was you, Xiu, Ying, who disagreed, insisting I stay another day for observation. When the younger ones have pleaded, what more could I say?”

Old Master Qin glared at his wife, resolutely refusing to take the blame, ”Coming home early would have been fine. Don’t I know my own body? It’s you all who make a fuss over nothing.”

”Grandpa Qin, the day you fainted really scared Grandma Qin. If it hadn’t been for Qin Xiu, Grandma Qin might have fainted from shock,” Ye Jian intervened on behalf of Grandma Qin, hoping the three elders would take better care of their health in the future, ”From now on, in snowy weather, you can’t go running in the snow or anything like that. Just a stroll will do, and you need to dress warmer.”

Grandpa Qin patted his forehead, joking, ”Oh dear, oh dear, another little Tang Monk has appeared. These days are going to be worrisome.”

”Deserved!” Grandma Qin glared at her old man and then affectionately took Ye Jian’s hand, ”Your Grandpa Qin just needs to be told off. You should scold him more for Grandma Qin, and I’ll give you a big red envelope for New Year’s.”

Ye Jian, with a twinkle in her eyes, nodded vigorously and took on the responsibility, ”Okay, I’ll definitely keep an eye on Grandpa Qin and my own Grandpa. They’re just like two kids, if not watched closely, I really worry they won’t take care of themselves.”
