I Became the Villain Alpha's Omega (BL)

The creak of the wooden floor was the only sound echoing through Havenwood Orphanage as the late-evening chill settled over the hills.

In the small, dimly lit kitchen, the sharp smell of boiled roots and bruised sage hung heavy in the air. Philia sat at the battered table, his long fingers wrapped around a chipped mug. Across from him, Nora was wiping down the worn counter with a damp rag, her movements slow, heavy with the quiet exhaustion of someone who had spent thirty years keeping a roof over abandoned heads.

She paused, wringing out the rag into a wooden bucket before leaning back against the counter, her worn eyes settling on Philia.

”You shouldn’t be here this long, child,” Nora said softly, her voice raspy from the evening chill. ”Not that I’m turning you away, you know this place will always be your home, but the palace isn’t a place that forgives an empty seat. Isn’t the Crown Prince expecting you back?”

Philia offered a faint smile, lifting the mug to his lips for a quick sip. ”It’s fine, Nora. His Highness understands.”

”Does he?” Nora raised an eyebrow, her weathered face lined with deep skepticism. ”A Crown Prince who understands his fiancé slipping away to sleep in a drafty bedroom with a dozen noisy children down the hall? That sounds more like a fairytale than the royal court.”

”It’s his second night letting me stay, isn’t it?” Philia murmured, setting the mug down with a dull thud. ”He knows I needed to see the children. He knows the air in the capital gets... suffocating.”

Nora sighed, shaking her head as she picked up her rag again. ”Just don’t let them find a reason to punish you, Philia. You’ve earned a life up there, but those high walls have sharp edges.”

”I know,” Philia replied quietly, his fingers tracing the rim of his mug. ”Yerel knows where I am, and he knows why I came. He won’t make a scene about a few days away from the estate.”

”I worry, that’s all,” Nora murmured, her eyes softening as she watched him. ”You come back here with shadows under your eyes that weren’t there when you were a boy running through these halls in hand-me-down boots.”

”The capital changes everyone, Nora,” Philia said, his voice barely above a whisper. ”You know that better than anyone.”

Before Nora could answer, the door leading from the rear quarters creaked open. Valen stepped into the kitchen, ducking his head slightly to clear the low wooden frame. His clothes was dusted with flour from the bread-baking earlier, his usual rigid, martial posture softened by the sheer physical toll of wrestling six hyperactive orphans into their cots.

”They’re asleep,” Valen announced, his voice low and raspy. ”The little one refused to close his eyes until I promised we’d mend his wooden sword tomorrow morning.”

Nora let out a soft, fond laugh, setting her rag aside for good. ”You’re too soft on them, Valen. They’ll have you on your knees before the week is through.” She turned, looking between the two men with warm, tired eyes. ”Go on, both of you. Get some rest. I’m closing up the kitchen.”

”You should rest too, Nora,” Philia said, standing up from the table. ”Don’t stay up scrubbing floor that are just going to get muddy again at dawn.”

”I know, I know,” she waved them off with a flick of her wrist. ”Off with you.”

Philia and Valen stepped out into the quiet corridor, their boots making almost no sound on the thin runner rugs. They walked side by side in silence through the dark hallway, the familiar drafts of the old building whistling softly through the narrow window gaps

They stopped at the small, cramped room at the far end of the hall, Philia’s bedroom.

Valen stepped in first, his eyes sweeping the dark corners of the room out of habit before letting Philia pass. As soon as Philia stepped over the threshold, Valen pulled the heavy wooden door shut, turning the key in the lock with a sharp, heavy click that echoed in the tight space.

The silence inside the room became instant, heavy, and absolute.

Without saying a word, Philia reached for the silver clasps of his thick outer tunic. His fingers moved with practiced, mechanical efficiency, undoing the metal fasteners one by one.

He pulled the heavy fabric over his shoulders, letting the fine, expensive material fall directly onto the dusty floorboards with a dull rustle. Next went his undershirt, dragged over his head and tossed carelessly beside his boots.

Valen stood rooted near the locked door, his eyes watching the fine fabric gather in the dust. A heavy beat of silence passed between them before Valen let out a low, rough breath.

”Does it really need to end up on the floor every time?” Valen asked softly, his voice dropping into that deep, quiet register reserved only for when the two of them were behind locked doors. ”That silk costs more than this entire building.”

Philia didn’t answer right away. He stood there, his back facing Valen, his chest rising and falling in shallow breaths. The room was illuminated only by the faint, silver moonlight cutting through the small glass windowpane.

Valen stepped forward, his heavy boots making no sound as he closed the distance between them. He stopped right behind Philia, his frame throwing a dark shadow over Philia’s pale back.

”I hate this,” Valen said, his voice a low, gravelly rasp that barely carried across the quiet room. ”I hate seeing you bleed yourself dry like this. I hate that you treat your own body like a sacrificial slab.”

Philia didn’t turn around. He stayed frozen beneath the weight of Valen’s shadow, his gaze fixed on the dark floor. A faint, bitter smile tugged at the corner of his mouth, devoid of any real warmth.

”Do you think I take pleasure in it?” Philia murmured, his voice soft, almost conversational, yet laced with a bone-deep weariness. He lifted a hand, hovering his fingers just inches above his own chest, right over his heart.

His fingers hovered there, trembling slightly, before he let his hand drop back to his side without making contact.

”I hate it too, Valen,” Philia whispered, staring blankly ahead. ”I despise every second of it. But it is the only way forward. How terribly unfortunate...”

Philia lifted his head, staring at his own reflection in the small, cracked vanity mirror mounted on the wall ahead.

In the dim moonlight, the glass reflected the sharp, delicate lines of his throat, his pale shoulders, and his bare chest. But right across the center of his chest, jagged and thick against his skin, was the deep, ugly ruin of a heavy, dark injury, a scar that cut deep into the tissue, twisted like an old root, pulsing with the faint, sickening memory of how close he had come to being completely destroyed.

Philia stared at his own image in the mirror, his breath catching in his throat as Valen’s heavy hand finally came up, resting flat against the small of his bare back.
