I Became the Villain Alpha's Omega (BL)

The forest behind the orphanage was pitch black, the thick pine branches overhead blocking out what little moonlight remained in the late hours of the night. The air carried the sharp, biting chill of the early morning, mixed with the damp, heavy scent of wet earth, crushed leaves, and pine needles.

Philia walked at a slow, deliberate pace, his light leather boots making barely a sound against the soft carpet of fallen debris. Beside him, Valen kept pace without effort, his eyes constantly scanning the dense shadows around them as they made their way back through the thick tree line.

”I could easily secure better subjects for you, Lord Philia,” Valen said, breaking the heavy quiet with a low, smooth murmur that barely carried past the rustle of the morning wind. ”A few beggars from the lower district of the capital, or travelers passing through the road. No one would notice if two or three vanished into the night. It would yield much clearer results than testing your blood on simple forest vermin.”

Philia didn’t glance over at his attendant. He continued looking straight ahead into the dark, using a clean piece of linen cloth to wrap his sliced palm, pulling the tight knot secure with his teeth as he walked.

”No,” Philia replied, his voice soft, gentle, and utterly unyielding. ”We cannot afford that kind of recklessness, Valen. Missing travelers draw unwanted eyes. Missing beggars bring city guards poking around the perimeter. The moment a noble or a royal knight starts asking why unexplained bodies are turning up near this sanctuary, everything we have built here falls apart.”

Valen bowed his head slightly in the dark, accepting the reprimand without a trace of pride or argument. ”As you wish, My Lord. Little animals will suffice for now.”

”They will,” Philia murmured, carefully smoothing down his sleeve over the fresh bandage. ”We have come far too close to our goals to let simple impatience ruin everything.”

Ahead of them, the thick wall of ancient trees began to thin out, revealing the faint, dark silhouette of the orphanage’s rear courtyard. The ink-black sky was just beginning to soften into a pale, bruised purple along the distant horizon. Dawn was rapidly approaching, and with it, the quiet, bustling routine of the sanctuary would soon spark back to life.

They moved with swift efficiency as they broke through the edge of the woods. Valen unbuckled his dark mantle as they walked, rolling it tightly along with Philia’s outer traveling layer into a compact, heavy bundle. When they reached the tall wooden disposal bins hidden behind the old tool shed, Valen unceremoniously tossed the soiled cloaks inside, burying them beneath a thick, messy layer of dry wood shavings and discarded timber scraps. To any passing servant or child, it looked like nothing more than ordinary workshop refuse waiting to be burned.

They circled around toward the rear of the main wooden building, stepping lightly over the damp, slick cobblestones of the walkway. Moving toward the narrow wooden backdoor tucked right beside the kitchen pantry, Philia lifted the iron latch with a practiced, entirely silent touch.

The heavy door swung open without a single creak, releasing the warm, rich aroma of roasting oats and freshly cut firewood into the chilly morning air.

Philia stepped through the threshold first, brushing a stray pine leaf from his sleeve, with Valen trailing quietly a half-step behind him in the dim hallway. But as they turned the corner toward the main corridor leading into the kitchen, a soft gasp made them both freeze in their tracks.

Nora stood near the large stone hearth, a heavy copper kettle held firmly in her calloused hands. She blinked at the two of them, her warm, wrinkled face lighting up with mild surprise as the flickering morning firelight caught her silver-streaked hair.

”Oh! My goodness, you two gave me quite a fright,” Nora chuckled softly, setting the heavy kettle down onto the iron grate with a dull clatter. ”You’re awake already? It’s barely past dawn!”

Philia’s entire posture shifted in less than a heartbeat.

The cold, calculating stillness that had governed his movements in the dark woods vanished completely, replaced by the soft, easy warmth that the children knew so well. A small, polite smile touched his lips, his dark eyes softening into a gentle, harmless curve.

”I could say the exact same thing about you, Nora,” Philia said smoothly, his voice light, sweet, and comforting. ”I thought I might actually beat you to the kitchen for once today.”

Nora let out a fond, affectionate laugh, wiping her hands on her clean linen apron as she walked over to the long wooden counter. ”You know how it is, dear. These old, aching bones don’t let me sleep past five anyway, and thirty hungry mouths don’t wait for the sun to properly rise. I need to get the porridge started before the younger boys start stomping around upstairs looking for food.”

”Then let me help you,” Philia offered immediately, stepping forward with an eager, helpful tilt of his head. ”I can cut the apples for the oats and start setting the bowls out.”

”Are you sure?” Nora asked, stopping to look at him with deep maternal warmth. ”I don’t want you to work yourself straight to the bone every time you come visit, Philia. Between managing the supplies and taking care of the little ones, you ought to rest a little more while you’re still young.”

”I am fine, truly,” Philia reassured her, his smile widening just enough to look entirely genuine and modest. ”I enjoy the quiet routine in the mornings. It keeps my mind clear.”

Beside him, Valen offered a stiff, respectful bow toward the old woman. ”I shall take care of the trash and gather firewood around the grounds for the day, then.”

”Ah, thank you, Valen,” Nora called out warmly as the tall aide turned on his heel and quietly slipped back toward the courtyard door. ”Such hard-working, fine young men, the both of you. The heavens truly blessed this place and these children when you arrived.”

”We are the fortunate ones, Nora,” Philia replied softly.

Nora turned her back toward him, focusing on the hearth as she reached for a heavy wooden spoon to stir the boiling pot of water. ”Well, come along then, Philia. Grab the paring knife from the rack, and we can get these apples prepped before little Toby comes wandering downstairs looking for his morning milk.”

”Right behind you,” Philia replied pleasantly.

As Nora kept her back turned to focus entirely on the fire, Philia took a slow, silent step forward to follow her deeper into the warm, scented kitchen.

As he walked, his gentle smile remained perfectly fixed upon his face, calm, harmless, and entirely serene, while his left hand quietly slid behind his back, tucking his bandaged palm completely out of sight beneath the heavy folds of his shirt.
