I Became the Villain Alpha's Omega (BL)

The sun was getting low behind the trees, turning the windows of Havenwood a warm copper and gold. Woodsmoke drifted through the air, mixed with the smell of boiling oats and drying lavender.

Philia stood near the long kitchen counter, carefully measuring out dry tea leaves into a heavy stoneware pot. His sleeves were rolled up past his forearms, revealing slender wrists that moved with the confidence of someone used to doing this every day. He looked completely at home here, bathed in the warm, fading light of the afternoon, far removed from the grand marble corridors and suffocating silences of the capital.

Nora wiped down the wooden table with a damp rag. She let out a long, contented sigh as she watched two young boys in the courtyard outside scramble to finish their game of tag before dusk settled.

”The roof in the west dormitory held up during rain,” Nora noted, glancing over at Philia with a warm, wrinkled smile. ”Not a single drop leaked onto little Toby’s bed. Those extra cedar shingles you ordered made all the difference, Philia.”

Philia poured hot water into the pot, steam rising up to soften his features. ”Good. We’ll need to reinforce the south wall. The wing gets terribly cold once the mountain winds start blowing.”

”Always thinking three steps ahead,” Nora chuckled, sitting down at the table with a soft groan as her knees gave out. ”I don’t know what this place would do without you. Most young men your age are off trying to make a name for themselves in the capital, chasing rank or coin. Yet here you are, counting grain sacks and mending wool socks.”

Philia set a steaming mug of tea down in front of her, his expression mild, almost serene. ”Rank and coin don’t keep thirty children fed, Nora. This place matters.”

”That it does,” she agreed softly, patting his hand.

As sunset bled into twilight, the dining hall buzzed with loud chatter. Philia moved between the long benches, ladling thick vegetable stew into wooden bowls and making sure the younger ones actually ate their turnips before reaching for bread. He wiped spilled broth from chin rags, laughed softly at a ridiculous story about a stray cat climbing the pantry barrel, and settled two minor disputes over who owned a carved wooden sparrow.

After dinner came the bedtime routine. Outside, the last traces of daylight vanished entirely, leaving the night thick and cold. The oil lamps were turned down to a low, amber flicker. In the younger boys’ room, six small beds were lined up against the lime-washed wall. Philia pulled a low chair to the center of the floor, opening a worn, leather-bound book of old folk tales.

His usually quiet voice became softer as he read about a gentle spirit who guarded the mountain passes. Within twenty minutes, the heavy rustle of blankets settled into the deep, slow breathing of sleeping children. Philia stood up quietly, tucked a stray blanket around Toby’s shoulders, and tiptoed out, leaving the door slightly ajar.

Philia went to his small room at the back of the ground floor and sat at his desk. His chin resting lightly on his hand as his dark gaze swept over the moonlit tree line outside. He couldn’t sleep tonight. In truth, he couldn’t afford to.

A soft, rhythmic knock sounded against the bedroom door hours later.

Philia didn’t startle. He simply turned his head, his face calm as the door clicked open just a sliver.

Valen stood on the threshold, draped in a dark traveler’s cloak that smelled faintly of damp earth and crushed pine needles.

”It is time,” Valen said softly.

Philia didn’t move immediately. He remained seated by the window, his gaze lingering on the dark silhouette of the courtyard below before he slowly turned his head to face his aide.

”Is everything prepared?” Philia asked, his voice low and steady, stripped of the gentle warmth he used with the children.

”Everything,” Valen replied with a quiet, disciplined nod. ”The perimeter is clear.”

”And the children? The staff? Did you make sure everyone is asleep?”

”I checked every wing personally before coming to your door,” Valen reassured him. ”Nora turned off the kitchen lamps two hours ago, and the dormitories are silent. No one is awake.”

”Good,” Philia murmured. ”Let’s keep it that way.”

Neither of them needed more words. The warm, gentle caretaker who had just tucked six children into bed vanished in an instant, replaced by a cold, absolute stillness. Philia stood up, reaching beneath his desk to pull out a dark, fitted coat. He slid his arms into the sleeves, pulling the thick leather straps tight across his chest, and drew a long, narrow iron blade from its sheath.

Philia quietly followed Valen out the door and into the cool night air.

The woods behind the orphanage were dense, with tall pines blocking most of the moonlight. Dew soaked the grass beneath their boots, while fallen needles softened their footsteps. They moved quickly through the trees until the sounds of the town disappeared behind them.

Valen led the way, moving quickly through the brush without slowing down. He seemed to know exactly where he was going, stepping around roots and rocks without hesitation. Philia followed a pace behind, keeping just as quiet as they moved over the soft ground.

After ten minutes of breathless tracking, Valen suddenly halted, holding up a single, flat palm.

”We’re here,” Valen whispered, his voice barely carrying above the rustle of the night wind.

Philia stepped up beside his aide, his calm face lit only by the pale moonlight slipping between the pine trees. Tucked deep into the natural recess behind the boulder sat a heavy, dark wooden box, bound in weathered iron and half-hidden under a bed of pine needles.

Philia knelt silently before the chest, his face completely devoid of emotion. He reached into his inner coat and drew a long, narrow iron blade that caught no light from the moon.

He leaned forward over the box, his shadow blotting out the iron latch.

Slash

A sharp, sickening thud tore through the quiet glade, followed by the heavy, wet crunch of steel driving deep through flesh and bone. Blood began to pool dark and warm across the cold grass.

Philia straightened and tightened his grip on the blade, his face giving away nothing as the forest went quiet again.
