I Became the Villain Alpha's Omega (BL)

Alderon sat alone behind his sprawling desk, surrounded by a mountain of unread border reports, tax ledgers, and official seals. The curtains were drawn tight against the late-night chill, sealing the room off from the rest of the silent, sleeping palace.

Outside, the night was long past its middle hours, but the monarch made no movement to rise. He simply stared down at his own withered, ink-stained hands, watching the faint tremor in his fingers.

A soft, hesitant knock sounded at the door.

Alderon didn’t look up. ”Enter.”

The door creaked open, and Halrond stepped quietly into the study. The old imperial aide carried a silver tray with a freshly poured cup of warm chamomile tea, his dark robes rustling softly against the polished floor. He took one look at the king’s pale face and sunken eyes, setting the tray down near the edge of the desk with a quiet, practiced motion.

”Your Majesty,” Halrond said, his voice low, respectful, and tinged with genuine concern. ”It is past midnight. You must rest, Sire. You cannot continue to burn the candle at both ends like this. Please take care of your health.”

Alderon let out a long, dry exhale that sounded more like a sigh of ancient exhaustion. He leaned back into the tall chair, closing his eyes for a quiet moment before looking up at his oldest confidant.

”Halrond,” Alderon murmured, his voice raspy from hours of silence. ”Tell me something honestly.”

”Anything, Your Majesty.”

”Have I been a good king?”

Halrond blinked, caught entirely off guard by the unexpected question. He paused, his hands resting lightly over his belt as he observed the tired ruler. ”Sire? Where is this coming from? Of course you have been a good king. You unified the shattered duchies, you secured thirty years of peace for the realm, and the people eat well under your reign. History will remember you as a wise and just ruler.”

Alderon offered a faint, bitter smile that didn’t reach his eyes. He reached out, his trembling fingers tracing the edge of an old decree sitting on his desk.

”When I was younger, I thought wisdom and justice were simple things,” the king said softly, his gaze drifting toward the shadowed corners of the vast room. ”I thought a good man naturally made a good king. But now, with my winter fast approaching and the realm fracturing at the seams... I look back at the trail behind me. I see how many terrible, shameful deeds I committed to keep this throne standing. I see the lives I discarded, the promises I broke, and the blood I spilled under the pretense of the greater good.”

”Your Majesty,” Halrond interrupted gently, stepping half a pace closer to the desk. ”A sovereign cannot govern a nation with pure hands. A good king must often do things he hates, things that tear at his conscience, for the sake of his kingdom and his people. The burdens you carried were necessary. You did what had to be done so the empire wouldn’t burn.”

”Did I?” Alderon asked, his voice barely a whisper. ”Or was I simply a weak man hiding behind a crown?”

He rubbed his knuckles over his weary eyes, leaning forward once more. ”Look at the state of things now, Halrond. The court is crawling with venom. The northern houses are restless, the noble families are at each other’s throats, and my own son... Yerel carries his own quiet storms. Troubles are surfacing from every shadow, faster than I can extinguish them. I lie awake at night, feeling the cold weight in my chest, and I cannot help but think... perhaps this is retribution. Perhaps the sins of my youth are finally coming back to demand their payment.”

”Sire, please do not torment yourself with such thoughts,” Halrond pleaded quietly, his tone softening with deep loyalty. ”You have borne the weight of this nation on your shoulders for over four decades. The unrest at court is merely the tide of politics, not a curse from the heavens. Rest now. Let tomorrow bring its own answers.”

Alderon looked up at his aide for a long moment, the heavy tension slowly leaving his shoulders, leaving behind only profound weariness.

”Perhaps you are right, old friend,” Alderon murmured, offering a tiny, reassuring nod. ”Go along to your quarters, Halrond. I will retire to my bedchambers in just a moment. I only need a few minutes of quiet to gather my thoughts.”

Halrond bowed deeply, his eyes lingering on the king with lingering anxiety. ”As you command, Your Majesty. Please... do not stay up much longer.”

”I won’t.”

The aide turned and stepped out of the room, letting the heavy oak door click shut with a firm, final sound.

Once the echoing footsteps completely faded down the outer corridor, King Alderon rose slowly from his leather chair. He didn’t walk toward the double doors leading to the royal bedchambers. Instead, he turned toward the quiet alcove at the far side of his private study.

Hanging on the stone wall was a massive, ornate oil painting encased in a heavy, gilded frame. It was the official imperial family portrait painted nearly fifteen years ago, showing a younger, broader Alderon sitting proudly beside his late queen, who looked radiant in her formal robes, with a young Prince Yerel standing politely between them.

Alderon stood before the painting for a long time, staring at the painted faces of his former life. Then, with a slow motion, he reached out and touched the subtle iron latch hidden along the left edge of the golden frame.

With a soft click, the entire family portrait swung forward like a hidden door, revealing a small, recessed niche built deep into the stone wall.

Inside the dark alcove hung a single, smaller canvas. It was unadorned, lacking any gold leaf or royal crest, preserved only by the shadows of the room.

Painted upon it was the likeness of a woman, possessing smooth, pale skin, soft eyes, and a cascade of striking, midnight-black hair that fell over her shoulders like a dark silk veil. She wore no jewels, no royal tiara, and no aristocratic gowns, yet the portrait captured an haunting, undeniable grace that made the rest of the grand study fade into insignificance.

King Alderon stared at the painting, the harsh, stern lines of his face softening into an expression of raw, unbearable grief. His trembling fingers reached into the alcove, lightly pressing against the canvas, tracing the curve of the black-haired woman’s cheek as if she were made of thin glass.

”How I’ve missed you, dear.”
