Beauty and Might: Heavenly Flames

Yao Fuhuo turned slightly toward Ji Hong. ”I will be leaving,” she said. ”There is nothing further to address here.”

Then her gaze returned to Li Yan. ”But you—come with me.”

A brief pause followed. ”There are matters we must discuss.”

”And your next task.”

The words were calm.

Yet final.

Before anyone could respond, her hand moved.

A soft golden light unfolded around her and Li Yan, enveloping them in a gentle radiance that seemed to exist beyond the physical world.

Then—

They vanished.

The assembly grounds fell silent.

Completely.

No whispers. No movement. Only absence.

Ji Hong exhaled slowly, the tension in his chest finally easing as the weight of the moment passed.

”Good timing,” he murmured. ”If he hadn’t spoken…”

He did not finish the thought.

He did not need to.

Beside him, the elders exchanged glances, their expressions thoughtful, measured.

Yu Long spoke at last. ”He looks closer to the Goddess than we thought.”

His voice was low.

Certain.

And within that certainty—

Lay something unspoken.

Li Yan—

Was not just a disciple.

*****

A subtle distortion brushed against Li Yan’s senses as space itself shifted around him. One moment, he stood within the assembly grounds; the next, reality folded like rippling silk under Yao Fuhuo’s will.

Light flared briefly, followed by a moment of complete silence. When his vision stabilized, Li Yan found himself standing atop the vast canopy of an enormous ancient tree, his footing steady upon a branch wide as a road.

Even though this was not his first time here, the sight remained breathtaking. Massive branches stretched endlessly in every direction, layered with jade-like leaves that shimmered under the soft glow of the setting sun.

Golden light filtered through the dense foliage, scattering across the bark, which pulsed faintly with a warm luminescence. The tree itself felt alive beneath his feet, its presence steady, ancient, and quietly overwhelming.

At the heart of the canopy stood a structure seamlessly grown from the tree itself. It was not built, but shaped, its form blending naturally into the surrounding branches as though it had always belonged there.

Vines wrapped gently along its surface, blooming with small, star-shaped flowers that emitted a faint glow. A soft, soothing fragrance filled the air, and with each breath, Li Yan felt his mind grow clearer and more composed.

Yao Fuhuo stood ahead at the entrance, her figure radiant against the natural grandeur. Without speaking, she stepped forward, her robes flowing like strands of light as she entered the dwelling.

Li Yan followed quietly behind her, his movements calm and measured. Despite having visited before, the transition into this space still felt like stepping beyond the boundaries of the ordinary world.

Inside, a gentle warmth filled the chamber, not from fire, but from the tree’s living essence. The interior was simple yet refined, with smooth wooden furnishings shaped into elegant, flowing forms.

Every surface carried a sense of quiet life, as though the structure itself breathed alongside them. The atmosphere was tranquil, yet deeply rooted, grounding the mind without suppressing awareness.

Yao Fuhuo gestured lightly, and a seat shaped as an open lotus rose from the wooden floor. Its structure was seamless, its surface smooth, formed entirely from the tree’s living body.

Li Yan took his seat without hesitation, settling into a composed posture. Across from him, Yao Fuhuo sat gracefully, her gaze steady and focused, carrying both warmth and quiet authority.

For a brief moment, she studied him in silence before speaking. ”Li Yan,” she said softly, ”you have grown well in these past months, both in strength and in presence.”

Her gaze shifted slightly, softening as she continued, ”But tell me… how is Yan Tian’s soul?” The question carried a deeper weight, one that extended beyond simple curiosity.

Li Yan’s expression turned introspective as his thoughts turned inward. ”There has been no change,” he replied calmly. ”He remains in meditation, silent, as though waiting for something beyond my understanding.”

Yao Fuhuo lowered her gaze slightly, a faint trace of sadness passing through her features. ”As expected,” she said quietly. ”Such matters cannot be rushed. He will awaken… when the time is right, and his soul becomes stable.”

A brief silence settled between them, heavy yet not uncomfortable. Then, she straightened slightly, her presence returning to its composed, divine authority.

”Li Yan,” she said, ”it is time for your reward. You have fulfilled your task, and I will now guide you in awakening your next element—Earth.”

Li Yan did not respond immediately, his thoughts moving with careful precision. After a moment, he lifted his gaze, curiosity flickering faintly within his calm expression.

”Senior Yao,” he said, ”you once mentioned that you could help me awaken Light, Nature, and Earth, in addition to the Fire element you already guided me through.”

A faint smile appeared on her lips, serene yet knowing. ”I did,” she replied, her tone calm but firm. ”And you are perceptive enough to understand why I did not offer them all at once.”

Her expression grew slightly more serious as she continued. ”Your body is not yet strong enough to withstand the balance between opposing elements. Light and Darkness cannot coexist safely within you at this stage; the same goes for Water and Fire.”

She paused briefly before adding, ”Attempting to awaken Light now would place your body under severe strain. Without sufficient tempering, the imbalance could cause irreversible damage.”

Li Yan listened without interruption, absorbing every word with clarity. After a moment, he gave a slow, deliberate nod, acknowledging both the risk and the reasoning behind her decision.

”As for the Nature element,” Yao Fuhuo continued, her tone easing slightly, ”it is not dangerous, but it is better to leave it for later.”

Li Yan’s gaze steadied, his decision already made. ”Understood,” he said calmly. ”I will follow your guidance.”

Yao Fuhuo’s expression softened slightly as she regarded Li Yan, her gaze carrying both calm assurance and quiet foresight. ”I expected you would choose the Light element first,” she said, her voice steady and composed.

”So, I have brought several items that will nourish your body and refine your foundation. With time, you will be able to bear the strain of opposing elemental affinities.”

Li Yan lowered his head respectfully, his tone sincere but controlled. ”Thank you, Senior Yao. Your guidance has been invaluable to me, and I will not take it lightly.”

Yao Fuhuo gave a faint nod before her expression shifted, a thoughtful hum escaping her lips as her gaze sharpened once more. She leaned forward slightly, studying him with careful attention.

”However,” she said calmly, ”before I awaken your next element, there are a few things I wish to confirm—things I have earlier noticed.”

Her eyes traced his presence with precision, not merely observing, but analyzing. Then, her gaze settled, and her tone grew slightly more inquisitive. ”You carry the faint scent of herbs,” she said. ”Have you begun practicing alchemy?”

Li Yan allowed a modest smile to surface, his posture relaxed yet composed. ”Yes,” he replied. ”Between hunting and cultivation, I began studying the basics. It has proven… unexpectedly rewarding.”

Yao Fuhuo nodded, a trace of approval reflecting in her expression. ”Alchemy tempers the mind and refines discipline,” she said. ”For someone like you, it is a path worth pursuing.”

Her gaze lingered briefly before shifting downward.

It stopped at his neck.

Her eyes narrowed ever so slightly, not in suspicion, but in recognition of something unusual.

”That mark,” she said quietly, almost to herself. ”Earlier, I sensed a pulse of spiritual energy from it. What is its origin?”

Li Yan paused for a brief moment, weighing the question. Then, without concealment, he extended his hands forward and just thought to summon the Spiritual Beast egg.

A soft glow emerged.

The symbol on his neck pulsed faintly, and a ripple of energy spread outward. From that ripple, a form began to take shape in the air before them.

A golden-black egg appeared.

It hovered silently above his hands before settling on them.

Roughly the size of a melon, its surface gleamed like obsidian kissed by sunlight. Faint wisps of spiritual mist coiled along its shell, shifting with quiet life.

”This is the source,” Li Yan said calmly. ”I obtained it during the pagoda trials of the annual competition. I have been nurturing it for nearly two months.”

Yao Fuhuo extended her hand slowly, her expression turning focused. Her Spiritual Sense flowed outward, threading into the egg with delicate precision, probing its structure layer by layer.

Time passed in silence.

The air grew still.

Then—

Her eyes widened.

Not in alarm—

But in realization.

She withdrew her hand gradually, her composure intact, though something deeper had stirred beneath it.

”This is no ordinary beast egg,” she said, her voice lowered, almost reverent.

Her gaze returned to Li Yan, now carrying a weight that had not been there before. ”Even at my level, I cannot fully perceive what lies within it. Its nature is… obscured, yet profound.”

A brief pause followed.

”Whatever is inside,” she added quietly, ”it is rare. Perhaps even sacred.”

Her expression softened, sincerity evident. ”You have been extraordinarily fortunate, Li Yan.”

Yet beneath her words—

There was restraint. She had seen more than she revealed. But some truths were not meant to be spoken prematurely.

Li Yan met her gaze steadily, his expression calm as he acknowledged the unspoken depth behind her words without pressing further.

The silence that followed was not uncertain.

It was understanding.

Then Yao Fuhuo straightened, her expression settling into calm authority as her presence shifted subtly. ”Sit cross-legged,” she instructed, her voice steady and composed, carrying a quiet weight that left no room for hesitation. ”Ready yourself to awaken the Earth element.”

Li Yan stored the egg in the mark before adjusting himself. He straightened his posture, spine straight, hands resting on his knees, as his breathing slowed into a steady rhythm.

As his eyes closed, the world seemed to recede. The rustling of leaves, the distant calls of birds, and the deep, rhythmic pulse of the tree beneath him blended into a quiet, living harmony that surrounded his awareness.

The ambient energy of the treehouse flowed around him gently, like a calm current, soothing yet alive. Within that tranquility, his thoughts remained sharp, his will anchored, his focus unwavering as he prepared himself completely.

When Li Yan opened his eyes again, they carried a quiet, unshakable resolve. ”I’m ready,” he said, his voice low and steady, reflecting both clarity and determination without the slightest trace of doubt.

Yao Fuhuo’s lips curved slightly in approval as she raised her hand. With a graceful motion, her fingers traced a subtle pattern, and a faint seal flickered briefly before dissolving into the surrounding air.

The atmosphere changed instantly. The air grew heavier, denser, as if the weight of the world itself had subtly increased. A deep, resonant vibration began to rise from beneath the land, slow and primal.

From the valley below, vast streams of Earth Qi surged upward, gathering into a swirling vortex above the canopy. The energy twisted and coiled like a living force, carrying the raw scent of soil, stone, and rain-soaked earth.

The ancient tree responded with a faint tremor as the torrent descended. The Earth Qi poured into the treehouse in dense waves, filling the space with an overwhelming yet controlled pressure that pressed steadily against everything within.

The energy gathered around Li Yan, forming a slow-moving cocoon that enveloped him completely. Each wave carried immense weight, like shifting mountains, yet it did not crush—it tempered, steady and unyielding.

”Focus your breath. Anchor your mind,” Yao Fuhuo instructed, her voice calm and precise. She stood still, her presence unwavering, like an ancient guardian overseeing a sacred and irreversible transformation.

Li Yan closed his eyes once more and guided the Earth Qi into his body. It entered in dense, heavy streams, flowing through his skin and into his meridians, stabilizing his energy while reinforcing his foundation from within.

The sensation was immediate and distinct. Unlike the sharp intensity of fire or the consuming depth of darkness, Earth Qi was steady and enduring, imbuing his bones with strength and anchoring his very existence.

As the energy circulated, his muscles tightened briefly under the pressure before settling into a deeper, more stable state. He maintained complete control, guiding every thread of Earth Qi Essence with precision and unwavering focus.

Time passed slowly, stretching into indistinct moments as the process continued.

Then—

One of Li Yan’s dormant meridians ignited.

Deep earthen radiance surged through his body as the first signs of his Earth affinity finally awakened.
