Beauty and Might: Heavenly Flames

As the realization unfolded, the world around him changed.

The air seemed alive with a gentle pulse. Each breath felt as though it flowed directly into his mind rather than his lungs. The wind brushed softly through the towering trees, yet the sound did not merely reach his ears—it echoed faintly within his thoughts.

Li Yan slowly closed his eyes. The connection he had felt moments earlier did not vanish. Instead, it sharpened.

The wind moved. He felt it. A leaf drifted down from a branch above. He sensed its movement before it touched the ground.

At first, Li Yan’s mind instinctively attempted to analyze the phenomenon, treating it like a technique to be understood and mastered.

The moment that thought formed—

The connection weakened. The forest seemed to retreat into the distance. Li Yan opened his eyes slightly. ”So forcing comprehension disrupts the connection,” he murmured.

He exhaled and relaxed his mind. Instead of trying to understand the forest, he simply observed it. The breeze moved gently through the branches again. Golden light drifted between the trees like quiet fragments of sunlight. Insects hummed softly in the distance.

Gradually, the connection returned.

This time it was stronger.

Li Yan became aware of the ground beneath his feet—the roots stretching through the soil, the countless subtle lives hidden beneath the earth. The forest itself seemed to possess a rhythm, like a heartbeat belonging not to any single creature but to the world as a whole.

Realization surfaced slowly. Spirit was not separate from existence. It was not merely consciousness, nor simply energy.

Spirit was awareness itself. The awareness that flowed through all living things. The awareness that connected life, thought, and existence.

As his mind quieted further, the understanding deepened. The forest was not teaching him through language or symbols. It allowed him to experience the Spirit nature directly.

A small bird landed upon a nearby branch. Li Yan sensed its presence instantly. Not through sight. Not through sound. But through the faint ripple of spirit carried within the creature.

His perception expanded naturally, spreading outward like gentle waves across still water. He sensed insects beneath the soil, the drifting wind between leaves, and the countless living presences hidden throughout the forest.

Nothing felt distant.

Nothing felt separate.

Everything existed within the same vast spiritual web.

Li Yan slowly raised his hand. The wind brushed across his palm, but this time he did not merely feel its touch upon his skin.

He sensed its intent.

Gentle. Unburdened. Free.

At that moment, a faint ripple spread across the forest. Golden particles drifting through the air gathered around him like silent witnesses. The towering trees seemed to lean slightly inward, as though acknowledging his realization.

A quiet voice emerged within his consciousness—not a sound, but a meaning.

To know Spirit… one must first become part of it.

Li Yan closed his eyes again.

His Spiritual Consciousness expanded instinctively, flowing outward far beyond its previous limits. It spread like a rising tide, merging seamlessly with the forest.

For a fleeting moment—

There was no separation between himself and the world. The wind was him. The forest was him. The countless living beings surrounding him shared the same presence.

His spiritual perception blossomed like a lotus opening at dawn. He sensed the freedom of a bird gliding through cosmic skies, the serenity of a flower turning toward starlight, and the fleeting fear of a deer vanishing through shadowed trees.

Then the final understanding settled within his mind.

Spirit was not something to control.

It was something to harmonize with.

At that instant, the forest dissolved.

The golden light faded.

The towering trees vanished like morning mist.

When Li Yan opened his eyes again, he was seated once more before the parchment bearing the word Spirit within the Ancient Techniques Hall.

The hall remained silent.

Yet everything had changed.

The air shimmered faintly around him, and every object within his sight pulsed softly with Spiritual essence. The world felt clearer, deeper, alive in ways he had never perceived before.

His Spiritual Sense had transformed. Li Yan inhaled slowly. A faint smile appeared on his lips.

”I see…” For the first time since awakening his Spiritual Consciousness—

He truly understood it.

Li Yan wished to test how much his Spiritual Sense had improved. Slowly extending it outward, he felt his awareness spread through the hall.

The range expanded easily.

His perception covered nearly fifty meters without resistance.

A faint smile appeared on his lips. ”So it’s grown to fifty meters.”

His gaze shifted briefly toward Ji Hong. The sect leader remained seated before the Sword pillar, motionless in deep concentration. Ji Hong showed no reaction to the spiritual perception sweeping across the hall.

Li Yan’s eyes narrowed slightly in thought. ”Just as I suspected…”

Those without awakened Spiritual Consciousness could not perceive Spiritual Sense directly, even with someone at Ji Hong’s cultivation. To them, the energy remained invisible.

He nodded faintly to himself. The realization felt obvious now. But when he glanced down at the bracelet on his wrist, his expression changed.

12:39:53 remaining.

Li Yan froze. To him, it had felt like only minutes had passed while he comprehended the word Spirit. Yet more than four hours had vanished.

He exhaled slowly, calming the sudden ripple of surprise in his mind. Comprehending the inscription had seemed effortless, but the depth of immersion clearly consumed far more time than he realized.

Shaking his head lightly, Li Yan stepped forward. Without disturbing Ji Hong, he sat cross-legged before the second parchment—the one inscribed with the ancient word: Sword.

The moment his focus settled upon the inscription, the atmosphere changed. Unlike the gentle harmony surrounding Spirit, this word radiated something entirely different.

Sharp. Precise. Dangerous.

The air around the parchment seemed to vibrate faintly, as if invisible blades of Qi drifted within it. The aura was not welcoming.

It was challenging. Li Yan steadied his breathing and extended his Spiritual Sense toward the inscription. The moment his consciousness touched the word—

The world shattered.

He found himself standing within a realm of endless twilight.

The ground beneath his feet was cracked black stone stretching endlessly in every direction. Above him, the sky burned crimson, streaked with veins of dark clouds that churned like slow-moving storms.

Jagged mountains shaped like enormous blades rose along the horizon, their peaks piercing the heavens like unsheathed swords. But what drew his attention most were the countless blades surrounding him. Thousands of swords were embedded in the ground.

Some gleamed with divine brilliance, their steel pristine and radiant. Others were battered and rusted, chipped from countless battles, yet still humming with faint power.

Every sword carried its own presence. Some radiated cold indifference. Others burned with grief, fury, or triumph.

They were not merely weapons. They were wills.

The echoes of countless warriors lingered within them, their spirits imprinted upon the steel through blood and battle.

As Li Yan stepped forward, he felt those intentions brushing against his consciousness.

Some swords rejected him instantly.

Others pulsed faintly, as though measuring his resolve.

A few radiated overwhelming pressure; their killing intent was sharp enough to make the air tremble.

Li Yan closed his eyes.

Instead of resisting the pressure, he allowed himself to feel it fully.

The countless swords surrounding him began to hum faintly; their invisible waves of intent collided, forming a chaotic symphony.

One sword carried the sorrow of a fallen general. Another burned with relentless vengeance.

One radiated calm discipline, forged through decades of patient mastery.

Each sword carried its own story.

And slowly, Li Yan began to understand. Swordsmanship was not merely a technique.

It was will.

The sword was the extension of a cultivator’s intent—shaped by conviction, tempered by struggle, and refined through countless battles.

A sword without intent was only steel.

But a sword guided by true will could cut through heaven and earth.

Li Yan opened his eyes.

He stepped toward one of the swords embedded deep in the ground and reached for its hilt. Before his hand could close around it, the entire field trembled.

All of the swords vibrated faintly, as if reacting to something far greater.

Then—

Hundreds of meters away, the cracked ground split apart with a thunderous roar.

A massive fissure opened across the battlefield, spreading outward like a scar across the earth. From within that chasm, something colossal began to rise.

Stone shifted. Ancient metal groaned. Slowly, a towering structure emerged from the depths.

It resembled a massive black tower forged from layers of dark steel and jagged stone. Countless sword marks scarred its surface, as though it had endured thousands of battles across untold centuries. Broken swords protruded from its walls like relics of forgotten warriors.

The tower rose higher and higher until it pierced the crimson sky.

At its peak stood a single enormous sword, embedded point-down into the structure’s crown, its blade radiating a terrifying aura that made every sword across the field vibrate in silent reverence.

Li Yan stood motionless, staring at the towering monument.

The air around it carried an ancient pressure—vast, heavy, and unmistakably sovereign.

And instinctively, Li Yan understood. This tower was not merely part of the realm. It was the heart of it.

Li Yan’s gaze eventually settled on the massive door at the base of the tower. ”Let’s see what was inside the tower.”

Without hesitation, he began walking toward it.

For the first few steps, nothing unusual happened. But after advancing several meters, a heavy pressure suddenly descended upon him. ”Oh? Was this a test?”

The force came from the tower. It pressed against his consciousness like an invisible mountain. Li Yan was surprised and slowed slightly, but did not stop. Step by step, he continued forward.

With every meter he crossed, the pressure intensified. The air around him thickened, making each movement heavier than the last. It felt as though the realm itself was testing his resolve.

Along the path, countless swords hummed softly with different intents.

Some radiated cold killing intent. Others pulsed with calm discipline or quiet sorrow. Their resonances brushed faintly against his consciousness as he passed.

Yet Li Yan did not stop to examine any of them. His focus remained fixed on the tower. The distance slowly closed.

When he was roughly 80 meters from the structure, the pressure became overwhelming.

His steps slowed to a crawl.

Every movement demanded immense effort. The invisible weight pressing upon him felt powerful enough to crush ordinary cultivators to their knees. But thanks to his dense Spiritual Sea, he was still conscious.

But after a few more steps, Li Yan felt his consciousness flicker; the pressure pushed him to his limit, and he couldn’t move forward even one more step.

”Is this my limit?” Li Yan gritted his teeth. ”No, I won’t fail…” Still, he forced himself to step forward.

Then something unexpected happened.

Several nearby swords suddenly began to vibrate.

Their faint auras drifted outward like wisps of mist. The invisible currents gathered around Li Yan and gently wrapped around his body before merging into him.

The effect was immediate. The crushing pressure surrounding him lightened dramatically.

His breathing steadied. The heaviness pressing against his limbs faded until he could move almost freely again.

”Amazing… I think there was something that wanted me to reach the tower?” Surprised but not stopping, Li Yan continued walking.

Each time the pressure from the tower rose again, more sword auras from nearby swords drifted toward him. They wrapped around his body before dissolving into his presence, easing the burden once more.

It felt as though the countless swords within the field were acknowledging his resolve.

More than an hour passed as he steadily advanced. At last, Li Yan arrived before the base of the tower.

The enormous door loomed before him. Only three stone steps separated him from its entrance. His breathing had grown uneven from the effort, so he paused briefly to steady himself. Drawing a few deep breaths, he calmed his racing heartbeat.

Then Li Yan felt something or someone within the tower was watching him for a moment, then that feeling disappeared, ”Is this… my hallucination?”

Shaking his head, he stepped forward. The moment his foot touched the first stair—

The immense pressure vanished. Completely.

Li Yan froze for a brief moment.

The oppressive weight that had followed him across the battlefield was gone, as if it had never existed at all.

His body suddenly felt light and unburdened. A trace of surprise flickered across his face.

Without hesitation, he climbed the second step. Then the third. Nothing stopped him.

Standing before the massive door, Li Yan extended his right hand and attempted to touch the surface.

But his fingers never met solid stone. Instead, his hand passed directly through the door as though it were nothing more than mist.

Li Yan immediately withdrew his hand in surprise.

”So it’s not a real door…” he murmured.

Understanding dawned quickly. This was merely the illusion of an entrance. Without hesitation, Li Yan stepped forward. His body passed through the door like a shadow slipping through fog.

And he entered the tower.
