Beauty and Might: Heavenly Flames

A sound broke the silence.

Crack.

It was faint. Almost imperceptible. Yet within the stillness of the cavern, it struck with absolute clarity.

Li Yan’s eyes snapped open. His hand froze.

Another sound followed.

Then another.

Thin fractures began to spread across the egg’s surface, delicate lines branching outward like threads of silver lightning etched into obsidian.

The glow intensified.

Then—

It burst.

A wave of radiant energy surged outward, filling the cavern with prismatic light. Colors shifted and refracted across the stone walls, transforming the oppressive heat into something almost surreal.

Li Yan instinctively narrowed his eyes, shielding them slightly against the sudden brilliance.

At the same instant—

A sharp pulse struck his neck.

The mark.

The faint symbol etched into his skin—one he had long noticed but never understood—began to glow. The same rainbow light emanating from the egg now flowed into it, resonating in perfect harmony.

”What is this…?” he whispered, his voice low, edged with uncertainty.

Before he could react further, the egg trembled.

Then—

Collapsed.

Its form dissolved into a stream of golden light, rushing forward with sudden force and merging directly into the glowing mark at his neck.

The moment contact was made—

Everything changed.

A surge of energy erupted within him.

Li Yan staggered slightly, his breath catching as the force flooded his body. This was not the Fire Qi he had guided moments before. It was purer—far purer than anything he had encountered.

Dense. Refined. Perfectly balanced.

”This—!” His pupils contracted sharply.

The energy surged through his meridians like a tidal wave, yet there was no resistance, no conflict. His body accepted it instinctively, as though it had always belonged.

There was no time to hesitate.

Li Yan immediately stabilized his posture, sinking back into a meditative state. His breathing slowed, his mind sharpened, and his control locked onto the flow of energy rushing within him.

He guided it. Directed it.

Contained it.

Every strand of Qi was drawn toward his core, refined and compressed as it flowed into his dantian.

The pressure built.

Condensed.

Then—

It broke.

A pulse of energy erupted outward from within his body, sending a faint tremor through the surrounding air. The Fire Qi within the cavern reacted briefly, resonating with the shift before settling once more.

Li Yan had advanced to the Qi Gathering Realm (Stage-9).

A slow breath escaped him, steady and controlled. But he did not open his eyes. Instead, he continued.

The energy within him had not yet fully settled. With precise control, he guided the remaining Qi, reinforcing the newly formed node, stabilizing its structure, and strengthening the foundation of his dantian.

No excess was wasted.

No fluctuation ignored.

Only when the final traces of energy were fully integrated did the flow begin to calm.

And still—

Li Yan remained unmoving.

Refining. Stabilizing. Perfecting.

Several minutes passed before the flow within Li Yan’s body finally settled.

The pure Qi that had surged through his meridians was now completely absorbed, its remnants refined and anchored within his dantian. Yet even as the turbulence faded, something remained—subtle, unfamiliar, and distinctly different.

Li Yan did not move. Instead, he observed.

This energy did not behave like Qi. It did not circulate through the meridians, nor did it respond to the usual patterns of cultivation. It lingered closer to his consciousness—light, elusive, yet undeniably present.

Spiritual energy.

The realization came quickly.

Without hesitation, Li Yan adjusted his focus and guided the energy upward. His awareness sharpened as he directed it toward the upper dantian, in between his brows, where his Soul Core resided.

The process was slower. More delicate.

Unlike Qi, this energy resisted direct control, requiring careful guidance rather than force. Li Yan maintained absolute precision, allowing it to flow naturally while ensuring none of it dissipated.

Time passed quietly. Nearly half an hour later, the last traces of spiritual energy were fully absorbed. Li Yan remained still for a moment before extending his Spiritual Sense.

The range remained unchanged.

Fifty meters.

But—

Something had shifted.

The density of his perception had deepened. Every detail within his range became sharper, more defined. Movements that once blurred now appeared distinct. Even the subtle fluctuations of energy carried a clearer intent.

Stronger. More refined. More precise.

Li Yan exhaled slowly, loosening his shoulders as a faint sigh escaped him.

”I came here to feed Qi to the egg…” he murmured, his tone calm yet faintly amused, ”and ended up advancing an entire stage.”

A soft chuckle followed, low and genuine, echoing lightly through the cavern. ”Feels like those old marketing tricks…”

His lips curved slightly. ”Buy one, get one free.” The sound of his quiet laughter faded into the heat-filled silence.

His hand rose instinctively to his neck.

The mark.

As his fingers brushed against it, a faint golden glow surfaced once more, responding to his focus. The light intensified gradually before condensing outward.

The egg reformed.

It emerged from the mark in a slow, controlled manifestation, hovering above his palm as if it had never left. Yet the difference was immediate.

It had changed.

A fine crack now traced across its surface, spreading like a web of faint golden light. The veins beneath its shell glowed more vividly, their pulses stronger and more defined.

Alive. Aware. Closer.

Li Yan studied it in silence, his gaze narrowing slightly as he observed the subtle shifts within its energy.

”The first sign…” he murmured. ”The first crack… but it’s progressing.”

The realization settled firmly. This was no ordinary spiritual beast. Even in its dormant state, its presence carried complexity far beyond expectation.

With a thought, the egg dissolved once more into a stream of golden light, returning to the mark at his neck and vanishing from sight.

Yet his mind did not settle. ”That mark…” he thought quietly. ”A storage space? Or something more?”

The question lingered. Unanswered. But not urgent. Whatever resided within that shell—

It would reveal itself soon enough.

Li Yan’s focus shifted. ”The first sign has appeared,” he murmured. ”Then there’s no need to delay.”

His gaze lifted slightly as he considered his next step. Breakthrough. The Qi Gathering Realm had reached its limit. The next realm awaited.

He briefly considered the two Tier-3 Mid-Level Qi Gathering Pills stored within his ring. They would guarantee a smooth transition—stable, efficient, controlled.

Then he dismissed the thought. The raw Fire Qi in the mine itself—

Was enough.

”This place…” he said softly, his gaze sweeping across the cavern, ”is more effective than any pill.”

A faint smile formed. ”And it costs nothing.”

He closed his eyes once more. This time, his focus deepened.

The Fire Qi within the mine responded immediately, drawn toward him in subtle currents. He did not force it. Instead, he guided it, weaving its flow into a steady rhythm that aligned with his breathing.

Controlled. Measured. Precise.

Streams of energy entered his body, circulating through his meridians before converging toward his Qi Core. Each cycle strengthened the flow, increasing its density, refining its structure.

The process accelerated. Minutes passed.

The pressure built.

His Qi Core began to swell, nearing its limit as the nine existing Qi Nodes vibrated in response. One by one, they resonated, their structure loosening as they approached integration.

Then—

They moved.

Each node merged into the core in sequence, dissolving into a single, unified structure. The process was smooth, controlled, and without instability.

The moment the final node integrated—

The breakthrough came.

A surge of energy erupted outward from his body, sending a wave of force through the cavern. Fire Qi recoiled, pushed back several meters as the air trembled under the pressure.

The stone beneath him cracked slightly. A crimson glow enveloped his form for a brief moment before fading.

Li Yan had advanced to the Qi Refining Realm (Stage-1).

He did not move immediately.

Instead, he stabilized.

The energy within him continued to circulate as he guided it carefully, reinforcing the newly upgraded Qi Core and newly formed Qi Node, ensuring their stability and eliminating any trace of imbalance.

Only when everything settled into perfect alignment did he allow his breathing to slow.

Then—

He opened his eyes. The faint glow within his pupils faded gradually, returning to calm clarity.

”Qi Refining Realm… Stage One,” he murmured. His voice remained steady.

But beneath it—

A quiet acknowledgment lingered.

The path ahead—

Had just begun.

Satisfied with the stability of his breakthrough, Li Yan rose slowly from the stone surface. The faint glow of the Qi lamp cast shifting light across his features, reflecting a calm that ran deeper than simple achievement.

He picked up the lamp and let his gaze sweep across the cavern once more. The Fire Qi still pulsed steadily through the mine, dense and alive, yet now it felt… lighter, less imposing beneath his strengthened foundation.

His Spiritual Sense expanded outward instinctively, sharper than before, probing the edges of the cavern with refined clarity.

”Let’s head back,” he murmured.

With that, he walked toward the teleportation portal.

By the time Li Yan exited the Fire Mine, night had already settled over the sect.

The sky stretched dark above, scattered with distant stars, while lantern light flickered along the pathways below. The air felt cooler, calmer—far removed from the oppressive heat of the cavern he had left behind.

He ate a simple meal without lingering, his body already adjusting to its new state. Then he returned to his residence and went into his bedroom to rest.

Sleep came quickly.

Deep.

Uninterrupted.

*****

Morning arrived quietly.

Golden sunlight spilled across the sect’s towering peaks, cascading down the stone pathways in long, soft shadows. The atmosphere carried a sense of renewal, as though the entire sect breathed in rhythm with the rising day.

Amid that calm, Li Yan walked.

His steps were steady, unhurried, each one grounded in quiet certainty as he made his way toward the Core Hall. His long purple hair, tied loosely with a golden ring, shifted gently in the breeze, catching the light in faint, muted strands.

Eyes followed him.

Some with recognition.

Others with curiosity.

None with understanding.

Li Yan did not acknowledge them.

His gaze remained forward, composed, untouched by the whispers that trailed behind him. This was not a moment to display, nor one to explain.

Inside the Core Hall, the air cooled noticeably.

Faint incense drifted through the space, mingling with the soft glow of Qi lamps that illuminated the polished stone corridors. Each step echoed lightly, the sound subdued yet distinct within the quiet structure.

Li Yan moved without pause until he reached a familiar side room.

He pushed the door open.

Inside, Kang Ming sat reading.

The black-rank disciple lifted his head at the sound, his expression neutral at first. But the moment his eyes settled on Li Yan, something shifted—subtle, but unmistakable.

Surprise.

”Junior Brother Li…” Kang Ming leaned forward slightly, his gaze sharpening as he studied him more closely. ”You’ve… broken through?”

Li Yan gave a small nod. ”Yes.”

His tone remained calm, almost understated. ”I had some fortune,” he added simply. ”I’ve come to update my cultivation.”

The words were modest.

But the presence behind them—

Was not.

Kang Ming observed him for a moment longer. He had seen many disciples pass through this room, each eager to display their progress, each carrying pride or urgency in their demeanor.

Li Yan carried neither.

Only control.

Kang Ming did not question further.

Instead, he reached toward the jade recording tablet at his side, placing his hand upon it as its surface lit faintly in response.

”Place your disciple badge,” he said. ”And channel your Qi.”

Li Yan complied without hesitation.

The badge appeared in his hand, settling onto the tablet as he guided his Qi into it. The formation activated instantly, soft light pulsing outward in response to the shift in his cultivation.

A faint chime followed.

The result manifested clearly.

Kang Ming glanced at it once before nodding. ”Qi Refining Realm,” he confirmed. ”You’ve entered Yellow Rank.”

There was no exaggeration in his tone.

But there was weight.

He stood and walked toward the shelves lining the back wall, where robes of different ranks were arranged with meticulous order. Each color marked a step within the sect’s hierarchy—a quiet symbol of progress and recognition.

After a brief search, he returned. Two sets of Yellow Rank robes rested in his hands.

He extended them toward Li Yan. ”This is yours.”

Li Yan accepted them with a simple nod.

No words followed.

No ceremony.

Yet the moment carried its own significance.

A transition has been completed.

A threshold crossed.

He turned and walked out of the room without pause, the robes stored in his storage ring. Behind him, the door closed softly.

After updating his rank from White to Yellow, Li Yan did not linger within the Core Hall. Without pause, he turned and made his way directly toward the Tier-2 Hunting Ground.

The hunt awaited.
