My Infinite System.

Lucian trudged down the narrow stair at first light and found Old Henn already at the front desk with a pot of weak tea and a stack of marked chits.

Henn did not look up. ”You’re early.”

”I need work,” Lucian said.

That earned him a glance. ”What kind?”

”Honest. Loud enough to look normal. Quiet enough to keep me out of house business.”

Henn snorted. ”So not assassination, not debt collection, not temple courier work.”

”No.”

”Then go to the river yards.” Henn scratched a rough map on a scrap of paper and pushed it across. ”Ask for Foreman Sull. He takes Frees by the day. Pay is average. Questions are few if you lift what you’re told and keep your mouth shut.”

Lucian took the scrap. ”Taxes?”

”Yard tax comes out before you see coin. Street tax hits if you loiter in the wrong lane after bell. Don’t argue either one on your first week.”

”Understood.”

Henn poured tea into a second cup and left it there without ceremony. Lucian drank it. Bitter. Hot. Fine.

”You blending or hunting?” Henn asked.

”Blending.”

”Then blend. People who overplay ordinary get noticed faster than people who underplay it.”

Lucian nodded and left.

Reed Street woke in pieces. Shutters opened. A baker slapped dough. Two dock workers argued about rope prices. A Watch pair walked past without slowing. Lucian matched the local pace and kept his eyes forward.

The river yards sat behind a line of low warehouses and open cranes. Men and women already filled the boards. Some wore house tags. Most did not. The air stank of wet stone, oil, and fish.

Foreman Sull turned out to be a thick woman with cropped hair and a voice that carried.

”Experience?” she asked.

”Loading. Hauling. Guard shifts if needed.”

”Guard shifts I don’t need. Arms I do.” Sull pointed at a stack of sealed crates. ”Those go to Dock Four. Break one and I break your pay. Steal one and I hand you to the Watch. Clear?”

”Clear.”

”Name.”

”Lucian.”

”Just Lucian?”

”Yes.”

Sull marked him on a slate. ”Take a brace strap. Move.”

He worked.

The crates were heavy enough to make ordinary men swear. Lucian kept his strength inside a believable range and let effort show in his shoulders. He followed the other Frees. He copied their breaks. He drank from the same water barrel. When a tall loader named Pesh tossed him a pair of gloves, he took them and nodded.

”New?” Pesh asked.

”Yes.”

”It shows less than most. Keep it that way.”

By midday Lucian’s shirt stuck to his back and his hands had the right kind of dirt. Coin came at the bell after yard tax. The amount was modest. He did not complain.

Cael spoke once while Lucian wiped his hands.

”Good. Boredom is cover.”

”That’s the idea,” Lucian muttered.

After the shift he followed two loaders to a food stall near the cut and bought a bowl of stewed grain and meat. He ate standing up like they did. Talk around him stayed small. Dock fees. A broken crane. A house clerk who fined a Free for standing too near a marked gate. No one spoke of higher planes. No one spoke of infinity.

A boy tried to lift a pouch from a distracted vendor. The vendor clipped him on the ear and sent him off. People laughed. The street moved on.

Lucian walked the long way back to Reed Street and counted cameras that were not cameras, Watch routes, and corners with too much quiet. He bought a secondhand work coat from a lane seller because every other day-laborer wore one. He paid without haggling hard enough to stick in memory.

Old Henn was still at the desk when Lucian returned.

”You find Sull?” Henn asked.

”Yes.”

”She keep you?”

”For the day.”

”Then she keeps you if you show tomorrow.” Henn eyed the coat. ”Better. You looked too clean this morning.”

Lucian almost smiled. ”Any house talk I should avoid?”

”All of it. If Veyrn runners ask questions, you know nothing. If Sallis stewards offer side work, you are too tired. If a smiling broker says he can put a Free under soft protection, you walk.”

”I’ve heard that warning.”

”Hear it until it sticks.”

Lucian went up to his room, washed at the basin, and sat by the window. The alley below held a cat and two empty crates. Across the lane a woman hung washing and argued with someone inside about rent.

He could live like this.

That was the point.

Not forever. Long enough to become background.

At second bell he went out again and bought soap, a needle packet, and dried strips of meat. The shopkeeper talked about rain tax and a possible strike at the upper canal. Lucian made the right noises and left.

Tallen found him near the canal rail after dark.

”You got yard work,” she said.

Lucian glanced over. ”Word travels.”

”In the lower streets it does.” She leaned on the rail. ”Sull doesn’t keep soft hands. You still have all your fingers, so you did fine.”

”I’m blending.”

”I can see that.” Tallen watched a barge slide under the bridge. ”Just don’t blend yourself into a corner. Frees who take only day labor stay safe and stay poor. Poor people get desperate. Desperate people get used.”I’m not desperate.”Yet.”

Lucian kept his eyes on the water. ”I’m not here to climb.”Good. Climbers die loud.” Tallen pushed off the rail. ”If Sull cuts your days, try the stone depot on Ash Lane. Same rules. Worse dust.”

She left before he could answer.

Back at the boarding house, Henn had a visitor in a neat brown coat. House clerk, from the posture. Lucian stayed outside until the clerk left with a small ledger note and a tight mouth.

Henn saw Lucian at the door. ”Not about you.”I didn’t ask.”Smart.” Henn locked a drawer. ”He wanted names of new Frees this week. I gave him two who already left the city. You’re not on paper yet. Keep it that way.”

Lucian nodded and climbed the stairs.

In the room he sat on the bed and checked the city token, the remaining discs, and the work slate mark Sull had given him for return entry. Ordinary things. Useful things.

Cael’s presence settled in.

”You are doing this well.”

”That’s the job for now.”

”The lower plane rewards dull rhythms. Maintain them. When the higher eyes sweep, they skip what looks settled.”

Lucian stretched his shoulders and felt the honest ache from the crates. He could have emptied the whole yard in minutes. He had moved like a man who needed the pay.

Tomorrow he would do it again.

He lay back on the thin mattress and listened to Reed Street through the window. Boots. A cough. Distant bells. Someone laughing two doors down.

Keth-Arel still did not know him.

He intended to keep it that way until the moment he chose otherwise.
