My Infinite System.

Lirael arrives at the keep with a small detachment, knowing that it will not be enough to finish things off, and certainly not in any manner that leaves room for clean conclusions.

The outer gates are open, not broken, spared the usual hurry and the thoroughness of professionals who have finished their business there. She does not have to sweep the place to know what she finds - impressions linger, ghosts of those who have been taken and returned, disturbed dust and the lingering astringency of people who were here twice. Behind her, six containment specialists move carefully, and at the threshold, two erasure-class constructs wait as silent sentinels. Her detachment, plus the pressure lines from the Outer Gods, remain at a distance, a show of force meant to reassure. This was only an inspection, a confirmation, not an end.

”Sweep,” she says.

They move, carefully, into the courtyard, and she follows at a measured pace, taking in the impressions of the place. Lucian Black has been here since the extraction, his presence pressed into the main hall and upper chambers, neat and precise, if brief. Others linger as well, the imprint of Marc’s careful spatial arrangements, the more sprawling markers of Silas, the combined impression of the recovered group, all fading. A specialist detaches himself from the others along the side corridor. ”No bodies, no lingering signs of containment. Personal effects left behind. Whoever took them the first time was thorough, and whoever got them back was fast.”

”Black,” she says.

The man nods. ”Yes.”

She steps into the main hall.

The usual signs of habitation remain - chairs pushed back from a table, a mug, a cloak, the litter of a place hastily abandoned. If this was a victory, it was a hollow one, the kind of victory that only Lucian Black would accept, with nowhere to truly stand. He did not linger, not even in his own keep, and that was the problem. He moved, always moved.

Another specialist comes down the stairs, shaking his head. ”Upper chambers clear, though there are traces of the Merrin woman and the younger ones. Not enough to use directly.”

Lirael waits until the murmurs have died where the specialist stands in the middle of the hall.

They had expected the keep to be their staging ground, even if only briefly, somewhere to rally, to regroup, to fight another battle. Black had anticipated their needs, and in another man’s hands, the keep’s proximity to the battle site would have meant an easy defense, a predictable rallying point. Instead, Lucian Black had done the sensible thing. He tucked himself and his people into secondary positions, leaving this place as little more than a convenient outpost rather than a true base of operations.

One of the constructs lets out a low vibration from the doorway, where the open gates are now a reminder of advancing pressure from the Outer Gods. Far away, the impression of the approaching forces tightens like storm clouds gathering.

The scarred specialist stops a few feet from her. ”Orders?”

”Get the tracker.”

He hesitates, just for a moment, before moving, and Lirael walks the length of the hall during the waiting period, trailing her fingers along the table’s edge. Impressions linger there, heavier, the weight of Lucian Black’s presence pressing against the lighter touches of Marc, the sharpness of decisions made under pressure. There is something else, too, something deeper and more careful, woven into the mix - the touch of Alistair Black, old and inscrutable. Gone from the keep, most likely, early on in the proceedings. Useful, perhaps, or simply another casualty of Lucian’s loudly stated intentions.

The footsteps pick up again, and she turns as the tracker arrives.

The woman is lean, and her eyes are heavy with ink-heavy shadows, her face marked with delicate lines of the same dark fluid running from temples into her hair. She is not one of the others, nor does she move like one. Tracking was a particular kind of hunger, one that Lirael herself did not share, and the tracker moves carefully as she stops in front of Lirael. ”You already know the keep is empty.”

”I can feel that from the gate.”

”I need direction, not poetry. Black extracted his people from the holding site and did not linger. Get me the trail they took afterwards.”

The tracker moves past her without comment, fingers flexing as if tracing the air. She tracks Lirael’s progress through the hall, then the courtyard, then the eastern wall, where the impression of a forced opening and closing lingers. She stops several times, and younger specialists shift impatiently, but Lirael does not look at them. Waiting was a part of patience, and so was listening to the tracker’s next words.

”They took ground,” the woman finally says. ”Not far, in a manner of speaking, but with care. A pocket, one that offers reasonable defense. Marc Black’s trail is a series of carefully placed deviations, false trails, all meant to deter pursuit. All of it is good, but none of it is you.”

”That is also something I know.” Lirael’s fingers flex at her sides. ”They are not gone, not yet. A group of this size leaves impressions, even when they seek to avoid them. Black will be at the vanguard, as always, but Evelyn Merrin accompanies him. The rest are arranged neatly around them in support.”

”Direction.”

The tracker points northeast, away from the keep. ”There. And they do not move yet, so that should be a temporary position. They are recovering.”

Lirael nods. She knows how that felt, this pause, this lingering before pressing forward. It was the equivalent of finding oneself in the middle of a battle after a forced retreat, of injuries, the bruises of confrontation, and the slow nursing of wounds. It was the kind of position that left people vulnerable to being caught between arguments, between the sharp edges of what they wanted and what they were willing to concede. It was predictable in the manner of all things Lucian Black did, and that predictability was a weakness he shared with all dangerous men.

”Mark it,” she says, and the tracker’s markings flare as she binds the direction to a short-term sigil, passing it to the scarred specialist. ”That should be enough to give us a coordinated approach. After that, Black’s interference will make things difficult.”

”And we do not wait for his interference,” she adds, turning to the gates, where the constructs and her specialists wait. Beyond them, the pressure of the Outer Gods shifts as her orders move through the network of impression-eaters. It would take time to converge, but she did not intend for a direct assault on Black’s position, not yet. She wanted something closer, a tightening of the noose.

The scarred specialist falls in pace with her. ”If they are on higher ground, that will leave us vulnerable to assault.”

”Everything leaves us vulnerable,” she says. ”We will not meet Black’s chosen terms, not directly. We will cut off his options, make him move on our terms. We will force him out.”

”And the Outer Gods?”

”The Gods will tighten the noose around the keep. No reinforcements, no easy escape into another scarred pocket if Black intends to defend all of them. He will have to make his stand in the space we designate.”

They cross the courtyard together, and Lirael pauses only once, at the threshold. ”Make sure you burn nothing, leave the keep whole. If anyone gets back from their excursion and decides to take advantage of the open doors, I want the disappointment to be personal.”

The specialists nod, and Lirael turns away from the open gates. The wind beyond grows colder, and the impression of the Outer Gods tightens, slow and steady, a pressure building at the edges of the world. The tracker’s sigil pulses once, a brief pinpoint of light, in the scarred specialist’s grasp, marking a rise some distance from the keep. There, Lucian Black holds his people together with the same stubbornness that has brought him to this position, wounded and angry, and Lirael walks toward the next step. The empty keep will not stop her - not this time.

It is only the beginning.
