My Infinite System.

They hit the ground hard.

Not the dramatic sprawl of a battlefield defeat—just three exhausted bodies collapsing in the same instant, knees buckling as if someone had cut the strings holding them up. Finn tasted blood and dust. The world around them was wrong. Grey. Endless. No sky, no horizon, just a flat, featureless expanse that pressed in from every direction. It felt like being trapped inside a thought someone else had already forgotten.

Mira was the first to speak, voice hoarse. ”Where...?”

Dorian rolled onto his side, coughing. His left arm was a mess of burns and blood. ”Doesn’t matter. We’re not dead. That’s something.”

Finn pushed himself up on shaking arms. His side screamed where the last guardian had cut him. Blood had soaked through his tunic and was starting to crust. He looked around, trying to get his bearings. No walls. No ceiling. Just grey nothing stretching forever. He reached for space, tried to fold it, to jump somewhere—anywhere.

Nothing happened.

The power was still there, humming in his veins, but it slipped away like water through his fingers the moment he tried to use it. He tried again. Clones flickered for half a second and died. A weak burst of fire sputtered in his palm and went out.

”Shit,” he muttered.

Mira sat up slowly, gripping her staff like a lifeline. Her face was pale, eyes distant. ”I can’t feel the threads. Not properly. It’s like... the whole place is muted. Dead space.”

Dorian laughed once, bitter and short. ”Great. We climbed all that way just to get tossed into a bigger cage.”

They stayed on the ground for a while. Breathing. Checking injuries. Finn tore a strip from his tunic and pressed it against his side. Mira helped Dorian bind his arm with another strip. No one spoke much. The fight up the tower had taken everything. Now this.

Finn finally stood. ”We’re not staying here. Lucian’s waiting.”

He tried again. Poured everything into a single spatial jump. The grey around him rippled, almost mocking, then settled back into stillness. Mira closed her eyes and reached with her spirit sense, threads forming and dissolving uselessly. Dorian summoned a weak flame that barely warmed his hand.

Nothing worked.

The pressure returned without warning.

It wasn’t the crushing weight from the Warden earlier. This was subtler. A slow tightening, like invisible chains wrapping around their chests. Finn dropped to one knee. Mira gasped. Dorian swore through gritted teeth.

Then she appeared.

Not dramatically. She simply was there, standing ten paces away, watching them with those vast, star-filled eyes. The same ethereal woman from the tower doors. Her presence filled the grey void without effort. Ancient. Patient. Utterly overwhelming.

Finn tried to stand. His legs wouldn’t obey. The pressure pinned him like a hand pressing down on an insect.

”You are the students of the greatest anomaly in existence,” she said. Her voice was soft, almost gentle, but it carried the weight of erased worlds. ”We were coming for you. But it seems you lot could not wait.”

Mira lifted her head, eyes blazing despite the pain. ”Who the hell are you?”

The woman smiled. It didn’t reach her eyes. ”Names are for things that last. You may call me what you like. Warden. Erasor. End.” She took one step closer. The grey rippled beneath her feet. ”Since you brought yourselves to me, I will not refuse the gift.”

Finn snarled and forced himself up. Power surged—fire and space and everything he had. Clones burst into existence around him, six of them, each one burning with different affinities. He lunged.

The Warden didn’t move. She simply raised two fingers.

The clones shattered mid-strike. Finn’s attack hit an invisible wall and rebounded, slamming him back to the ground. Pain exploded through his body. Mira cried out as spirit threads she’d tried to weave burned away into nothing. Dorian’s desperate flame died before it left his hand.

The Warden snapped her fingers.

The world folded again.

Finn felt himself torn away, every muscle fighting, every ounce of will screaming no. Mira reached for him, threads flickering desperately. Dorian roared something wordless. It didn’t matter. The grey swallowed them whole.

They vanished.

The Warden lowered her hand. The smile lingered, faint and satisfied.

She turned, looking toward a point in the grey that only she could see. Beyond it lay the chamber.

”Lucian was supposed to die that day,” she murmured, as if speaking to someone listening. ”And that ability with him. But somehow that never happened. Lucy was saved too. And the ability—Infinite Replication—became yours.”

She stepped forward, fading from the grey cell.

”Evelyn and Lucian awakened something else. We are still trying to figure out precisely what it is. But until we do... you are to be confined here.”

Then she was gone.

The chamber was worse than any prison Finn could have imagined.

Chains. Everywhere. Thick black links etched with glowing runes, hanging from nothing and everything at once. They filled the space like a spider’s web made of iron and malice. At the center, suspended in mid-air, was Evelyn.

She looked exhausted. Silver hair limp, violet eyes half-closed. Chains wrapped her wrists, ankles, torso, and throat, pulsing slowly as they drained her. Each pull of energy flowed into the chains and disappeared into the tower beyond. She barely moved.

Finn, Mira, and Dorian appeared on the floor nearby, still on their knees. The pressure here was different—constant, draining. Finn tried to stand and nearly collapsed again.

Evelyn’s head lifted slowly. Her gaze found them. Recognition flickered, faint but real.

”...Lucian?” she whispered. The word was barely audible, carried on a breath.

Then her eyes closed again.

The chains tightened.

Finn stared, heart hammering. They had reached her. But the cost...

Somewhere far away, in a quiet garden bathed in evening light, Lucian stood alone among the flowers.

He felt it.

Not with power or systems or dramatic flares. Just a quiet certainty in his chest, the same way he used to know when Lucy was in trouble as a boy.

He turned north, eyes distant.

”They have them,” he said softly to the empty air.

Then he started walking back toward the keep.

The real fight was coming.
