My Infinite System.

Archon Seret called the hall to order well before the last of the lesser attendants could have taken a place.

She was Authority of Bound Thresholds, and the room answered her call as doors answered keys. Pillars of compressed dawn held a ceiling impossible to have been built by mortal hands. Beneath the arches, a living map of constellations shifted slow record, marking the domains, breaches and corrections of an administered cosmos. This was not a court of kings. It was a chamber of function. Every high seat belonged to a being who governed an aspect of existence.

They were the Authorities.

Not Lords. That rank sat above them and was rarer and older, and every single person present knew the difference.

Seret remained on her feet while the others seated. Facing Veyru of Continuous Measure was the sort of thing to which one paid attention, watching the floor- map with the eyes of deep time. Kaelor of Severed Continuities took his seat like a blade being returned to a sheath. Halist of Ordered Becoming arrived with more care in him, like even entrance should obey sequence. Mirael of Residual Names came last at the high chairs, so quiet that a number of lesser administrators only noticed her when the air had grown heavy with memory.

Below them, in the outer ring, subordinate officers now took wait in seal upon their lesser seats with eyes downcast. Administered detail. The authorities administered laws of existing reality.

Seret raised a hand.

”The fluctuation originated in something beyond the managed strata,” she said. ”Brief, precise, and old.”

Veyru formed long fingers into a point. ”Old in signature, recent in occurrence. Never harmless.”

Kaelor leaned forwards, for him always a slightly cut portion, as if the world left space on a habit for him. ”Three hundred and seventy-two cycles of First Measure in managing the gap left by Lord Cael. If it is his mark, I want it named as such. No soft language.”

Seret did not look away. ”It is his mark.”

The name changed the hall’s temperature.

Even here, with those who governed thresholds, measure, continuity, becoming, residual memory, Lord Cael was not a neutral subject. He was one of the Lords, above Authority, equal to those few who set direction and not merely administered it. His absence had long enough been to become part of infrastructure, long enough for workarounds to harden to policy, long enough for enemies to start probing the places his power made quiet.

Halist spoke carefully. ”A mark is not return. We have chased remnants before. Echoes, unauthorized inheritances, false flares from younger races playing with forces they cannot feed.”

”This was not a younger race,” Veyru said. ”The fluctuation bore rank structure. Not imitation. Structure. Lord-level compression, even if incomplete.”

Kaelor’s mouth thinned. ”Then either Lord Cael spent power, or something wearing a piece of him did.”

No one corrected the phrasing.

Seret gestured, and the constellation floor expanded an ember-mark in a group of younger realities. Layered readings rose from it: hard spike of unbound presence, annihilation signatures, and then withdrawal.

”The gap he left never closed correctly,” she said. ”We redistributed functions, sealed loose permissions, told the lower courts the seat was dormant and not vacant. That fiction has held because no one of equal rank forced it.”

”And now the fiction strains,” Halist said to this.

”Lord Cael’s absence has always been more than a missing person,” Mirael’s voice was soft and exact. ”It is an unfinished command.”

Kaelor turned the statement as a weapon. ”Then why not stop pretending this is only about recovery? We have enemies who have spent those same three hundred and seventy-two cycles testing the edges exactly of our order because of one of the Lords who is not present to keep those edges sharp.”

This shifted the hall.

Veyru’s eyes narrowed. ”The Fractured Choir has been probing the outer measure lines again.”

”And the Pale Inheritance has moved two dormant claims into active dispute,” Seret added. ”Small claims, symbolic. They are not small if they are establishing precedent.”

Halist looked between them. ”You think the fluctuation will embolden them?”

”I think any sign that Lord Cael’s power can still move without Lord Cael standing visibly behind it will be read as instability,” Kaelor said. ”Our enemies do not need him dead. They only need us uncertain whether his rank still functions.”

The attendants in the outer ring remained very still. Among Authorities, silence could be a political act.

Mirael watched the ember on the floor-map. ”There is another possibility that the disturbance is not only a signal to us but a summons to those enemies. If they detect the same signature, they may move before us.”

Seret nodded once. ”Which is why this hall is not waiting for a full Lords’ assembly. By the time the higher seats finish arguing who has jurisdiction, the trail will be cold or contested.”

”That is close to insubordination,” Halist said, though with not much heat.

”It is triage, we govern aspects, the Lords govern direction. When direction goes missing, aspects still prevent the house from catching fire.”

Veyru tapped the edge of a map. ”Then the practical question: do we send observers, binders, or a retrieval host?”

Kaelor answered immediately. ”Not a host. A host announces panic. Observers alone are too soft. Send a binding detachment with authorization to freeze the local layer if the signature spikes again. If it is Lord Cael, they hold position and signal. If it is a remnant or a successor vessel, they isolate first and interpret second.”

Mirael looked unconvinced. ”Lord Cael never responded well to isolation protocols.”

”Lord Cael is not here to object,” Kaelor said.

The words were colder than most in the room liked. That did not make them untrue.

Seret raised a hand and locked the map on the ember. ”There is also the matter of the system tied to his old work. Even dormant, its architecture was never fully mapped by this hall. If the fluctuation touched that architecture, this is not only a missing Lord, but a missing framework running processes again.”

Stillness took the oval.

Authorities could govern thresholds, measure, continuity, becoming, residual names. But they did it under the Lords. Cael’s old system was always at an awkward angle with ordinary administration - too complete, too flexible, willing to attach to singular person and make them into a solution. It had not passed cleanly to anyone else’s hands when he vanished.

Until now.

Halist spoke carefully. ”If we report this up, the Lords will take the matter out of our control.”

”May take it anyway,” Veyru said. ”Our duty is to place a handle on before then.”

Seret looked around the high seats and found enough agreement in posture to proceed. ”Then we are decided. A binding detachment, limited footprint, immediate deployment to the younger cluster where the fluctuation was felt. Priority one: confirm whether Lord Cael’s power moved on his will, by remnant discharge or through a living intermediary. Priority two: prevent other factions from planting a claim on the event.”

Kaelor stood. ”And if the intermediary is dangerous?”

Seret’s answer was calm. ”Then the intermediary learns what Authority means.”

One by one the Authorities rose. The constellation floor dimmed the ember, but did not erase it. In the outer ring, attendants finally moved, sealing orders into tablets which would only open under specific rank.

As the hall began to pour into corridors of command, Mirael remained a moment longer, eyes on the place where Cael’s signature had disturbed the deep records.

”Three hundred and seventy-two cycles,” she said under her breath. ”And still his absence administers more of us than some of the living seats.”

No one contradicted her.

Outside deployment lines opened in disciplined silence. Tools of binding woke on old racks. Authorities of the cosmos turned to face the younger realities with a single directive burning through the structure of their being:

Find the source of Lord Cael’s fluctuation.

Determine whether the missing Lord had stirred.

And reach before their enemies could name it an opportunity.

In the deep records of the hall, Cael’s seat was not touched.

Not filled.

Not closed.

Waiting.
