My Infinite System.

Lirael had not always been the Warden.

She remembered the valley where the rivers sang instead of flowing, where the trees kept every promise whispered beneath their leaves. That was her home once, in a world that had already been erased from every record but her own. She had been a Keeper of Threads then, walking the invisible lines that bound every living thing together. Memory to consequence. Joy to sorrow. Life to its necessary end. The balance was sacred. Fragile. Hers to protect.

She had loved the work. The quiet satisfaction of mending a frayed connection. The gentle cut when something threatened to tangle the whole. People trusted her. Children left flowers at her door. Her sister would wait for her by the river each evening, eyes bright with stories of futures only she could see.

Until the first anomaly.

A boy in the next village woke one morning able to make forests bloom from a single seed. The threads around him twisted and multiplied, refusing the old balance. Crops failed elsewhere. Rivers ran dry. Children were born without the usual measure of sorrow to temper their joy.

The Keepers debated for three days. Lirael argued for mercy. ”He is only a boy,” she said. ”We can teach him. Guide the threads back.”

They voted to cut him.

They chose her to do it.

She walked to the village at dusk. The boy was playing by the river, laughing as impossible flowers bloomed wherever his bare feet touched the earth. He saw her coming and smiled, offering her a handful of blossoms that smelled like every good thing she had ever known.

Lirael raised her hand.

She cut the thread.

The boy crumbled into grey dust that the wind carried away. The forest he had grown withered overnight. The rivers sang again. Balance returned.

But something inside Lirael never quite mended.

She began to see the pattern everywhere. Anomalies kept appearing. Small ones at first. A girl who could speak to the wind and make it answer. A man whose touch healed what should have stayed broken. Each time, the Keepers sent her. Each time, she cut the thread. Each time, a piece of her went with it.

She started asking questions the others refused to answer. Why did the Aethel allow these anomalies at all? Why did balance require so much pruning? Why did the world feel like it was afraid?

The final anomaly was her own sister.

The girl had always been quiet. Gentle. Then one morning she woke able to see every possible future branching from every choice. The threads around her became a storm. Villages would burn. Children would starve. Entire bloodlines would end in fire and regret.

Lirael was sent to cut her.

She found her sister sitting by their childhood river, eyes distant, watching futures only she could see.

”I saw you coming,” her sister said softly. ”I saw all the ways this could go. In most of them, you hesitate. In one... you don’t.”

Lirael raised her hand.

She hesitated.

Her sister smiled, sad and knowing. ”Good. That’s the one I hoped for.”

The cut, when it came, was not clean. It tore something fundamental in the world. The valley cracked open. The rivers stopped singing. The trees forgot every promise.

Lirael survived. Barely.

The Keepers found her wandering the ruins, covered in grey dust that would not wash away. They saw what she had become—a living fracture, a Keeper who had hesitated. They gave her a new name. A new purpose.

The Warden.

They bound her to the Aethel itself. Made her its instrument across all realities. She would find the anomalies. She would contain them. She would erase what could not be contained.

Centuries passed. Worlds rose and fell. Anomalies appeared and were pruned. She became efficient. Elegant. Cold.

Until Lucian.

He was supposed to die that day. The regression should have failed. Infinite Replication should have ended with him. Instead, he came back. He saved Lucy. He created more anomalies. He refused every attempt to cut the thread.

And now his students had walked straight into her domain.

The Warden stood in the grey cell, looking at the place where the three young anomalies had been taken. She felt the distant crack as Lucian entered the rift.

She closed her eyes.

For the first time in centuries, she remembered her sister’s smile by the river.

She wondered, very quietly, if balance was worth the cost.

Then she opened her eyes, the starlight in them hardening once more, and stepped forward to meet the man who refused to be erased.

The real her sat on a hill far from any world the anomalies would ever know.

Not the elegant construct she wore when dealing with them. Not the avatar of starlit eyes and midnight robes. Just Lirael.

She looked almost ordinary.

A woman of indeterminate age, dark hair streaked with early silver, face lined by centuries she had tried to forget. She wore a simple grey dress, the kind village women once wore when tending gardens. Her bare feet rested in the long grass. The wind danced across the hill, tugging at her hair, carrying the faint scent of rain that would never quite arrive.

She sat with her knees drawn up, arms wrapped loosely around them, staring out at the empty horizon. No grand throne. No cosmic vista. Just a quiet hill in a quiet place between realities, where even the Aethel rarely looked.

The wind played with her hair, lifting strands and letting them fall again. She closed her eyes and let it. For a moment, she could almost pretend she was back in the valley. Back before the cutting. Back when her sister still waited by the river with stories of impossible futures.

A single tear slipped down her cheek.

She didn’t wipe it away.

Balance had demanded everything from her. Every hesitation. Every mercy she had almost shown. Every piece of the girl who once left flowers at her own door.

And still the anomalies kept coming.

Lucian especially.

She had watched him for a long time. The man who refused to stay dead. The man who dragged his sister back from the pyre. The man who taught street children and broken nobles and nulls to become something more.

She wondered what her sister would have thought of him.

The wind picked up, dancing stronger now, pulling at her dress and hair like an old friend trying to coax her into a dance. She let it. For a little while, she let herself be Lirael again. Not the Warden. Not the instrument. Just a woman sitting on a hill, remembering what it felt like to hesitate.

Then she opened her eyes.

The starlight was back, faint but present.

She stood slowly, brushing grass from her dress. The wind settled, as if disappointed.

Somewhere far away, Lucian was walking through her domain. The kids were waiting in chains. Evelyn was whispering his name.

Lirael—the Warden—looked out across the empty horizon one last time.

”Balance,” she whispered.

The word tasted like ash.

She took a step and vanished, returning to the grey where the real work waited.

The wind kept dancing on the empty hill long after she was gone.
