My Infinite System.

The common room of the Silver Lantern Inn had never seen so many important people.

Archmage Theron Vance sat at the head of the table, his grey robes freshly pressed, his beard trimmed. Beside him, Magister Elara Voss arranged papers she didn’t need, her sharp eyes fixed on the stairwell. Two other council members flanked them—a round-faced woman named Magister Holt and a thin man with a nervous twitch called Master Corvin.

They’d been waiting for twenty minutes.

Finn had kept them waiting on purpose. Lucian hadn’t told him to. It was instinct. A lesson learned from years of surviving on the streets: people who waited were people who wanted something. People who wanted something could be negotiated with.

He descended the stairs slowly, one step at a time, his dark blue tunic pressed, his silver clasp straight, his boots polished. Lucian followed a few steps behind, hands in his pockets, expression blank.

”Archmage,” Finn said, nodding as he reached the bottom. ”Magister. Councilmembers.”

Theron stood. ”Finn. Thank you for seeing us.”

”You said you had a decision.”

”We do.” Theron gestured to the chairs around the table. ”Please, sit.”

Finn sat. Lucian remained standing, leaning against the wall near the fireplace. The councilmembers exchanged glances but said nothing.

”We’ve discussed your... conditions,” Theron began. ”The board is willing to grant you full scholarship, private quarters, and access to the restricted archives at an accelerated pace.”

”And my teacher?”

Theron’s jaw tightened. ”That’s the complication.”

”There is no complication. Either he comes with me, or I don’t come at all.”

Magister Elara Voss leaned forward, her smile sharp as glass. ”We understand your loyalty, Finn. Truly. But the Academy has protocols. Security measures. We can’t simply allow an unknown individual unrestricted access to our facilities.”

”Then don’t give him unrestricted access. Give him access to me. Where I go, he goes.”

”That’s the same thing.”

”Then it’s settled.”

Elara’s smile faltered. The round-faced Magister Holt spoke for the first time, her voice surprisingly soft. ”Child, we’re not trying to be difficult. We’re trying to protect you. And the other students. We need to know who this man is. What he’s capable of. Where he comes from.”

Finn opened his mouth to answer.

Lucian’s hand touched his shoulder. Light. Brief. A signal.

”Let me,” Lucian said.

Finn closed his mouth. Leaned back. Watched.

Lucian walked to the table. He didn’t sit. He stood at the end, facing the councilmembers, his hands still in his pockets, his posture loose and unconcerned.

”My name is Lucian Black,” he said.

The councilmembers waited.

”That’s the easy part.”

Elara’s eyes narrowed. ”And the rest?”

”The rest is complicated.” Lucian tilted his head, considering them. ”I could tell you a story. A long one. About worlds beyond this one. About powers you don’t have words for. About wars that lasted longer than your recorded history.”

Master Corvin’s nervous twitch intensified.

”But you don’t want a story,” Lucian continued. ”You want proof. You want to know what I can do. So you can decide whether I’m a threat or an asset.”

Theron folded his hands on the table. ”We want to know who we’re letting into our halls.”

”You’re not letting me into your halls. You’re letting Finn into your halls. I’m just... accompanying him.”

”Semantics.”

”Perspective.”

The room grew tense. Finn watched Lucian’s face, looking for the tell, the sign, the moment when patience turned to something else.

It didn’t come.

Lucian remained calm. Relaxed. Like he had all the time in the world.

”You want to know what I can do,” Lucian said. ”Fine.”

He raised his right hand.

Not fast. Not dramatic. Just... up. Palm open. Fingers loose.

The fireplace behind him erupted.

Flames shot upward, twisting into a spiral that danced across the ceiling, red and orange and gold. The councilmembers flinched. Master Corvin yelped. Magister Holt reached for something under her robes.

Finn didn’t flinch. He’d seen worse.

The flames settled. Not extinguished—shaped. They formed a sphere, hovering above the table, rotating slowly, casting warm light on the councilmembers’ faces.

”Fire,” Lucian said.

He flicked his wrist.

The sphere changed. Blue. Flowing. Water coiled around itself, forming currents and eddies, droplets suspended in the air like frozen rain.

”Water.”

Another flicker. Brown. The water thickened, solidified, became earth—a perfect sphere of packed soil, still rotating, still floating.

”Earth.”

The earth crumbled, scattered, reformed as grey mist. Air swirled around the room, lifting papers, rustling robes, tugging at hair.

”Air.”

The councilmembers stared. Their faces were pale. Even Theron, the Archmage, the man who’d seen everything, looked like he was watching a miracle.

Lucian wasn’t done.

The air stilled. The space around his hand shimmered—not light, not color, a distortion, a bending. The sphere vanished and reappeared three feet to the left, then back, then split into two, then four, then eight, each identical, each real.

”Space.”

The spheres merged. The shimmering stopped. Something else took its place—a pulse, a rhythm, a heartbeat. The sphere began to move, but not through space. Through time. Forward, then backward, then forward again. The councilmembers saw themselves reaching for their papers, then un-reaching, then reaching again.

Master Corvin stood up. Sat down. Stood up. Sat down. He hadn’t moved. Time had.

”Time.”

Lucian’s hand closed into a fist.

The sphere stopped. Everything stopped. The fire in the fireplace froze mid-flicker. The papers in the air hung suspended. The councilmembers couldn’t blink, couldn’t breathe, couldn’t think.

Then Lucian opened his hand.

The world resumed.

The councilmembers gasped. Magister Holt had her hand over her heart. Master Corvin was trembling. Even Elara, with her sharp smile and sharper eyes, looked shaken.

Lucian lowered his hand.

”Seven affinities,” he said quietly. ”Just like Finn. But I don’t need a crystal to access them.”

The room was silent.

Finn watched the councilmembers’ faces. Watched them recalibrate, reassess, realize that the man they’d dismissed as a bodyguard, a tutor, a nobody—was something else entirely.

Theron spoke first. His voice was hoarse. ”Who are you?”

”I told you. Lucian Black.”

”That’s not—”

”That’s all you’re getting.” Lucian put his hands back in his pockets. ”You wanted to know what I can do. Now you know. The question is: what are you going to do about it?”

Elara found her voice. ”We could arrest you. For questioning. For—”

”You could try.” Lucian’s tone didn’t change. Still calm. Still relaxed. ”I wouldn’t recommend it.”

More silence.

Magister Holt leaned forward, her round face pale but curious. ”You said there were worlds beyond this one. Other powers. Other wars.”

”Yes.”

”Are you from one of those worlds?”

Lucian looked at her. Something shifted in his eyes—not warmth, not coldness, something in between. Recognition, maybe. Respect.

”Yes,” he said.

”And you came here to teach Finn?”

”I came here looking for someone. I found Finn instead.” Lucian glanced at the boy. ”He reminded me that not everything is about the search.”

Finn’s chest tightened. He looked away, stared at the table, blinked hard.

Theron stood up. His movements were slow, deliberate, like a man who’d just realized he was standing on ground that might collapse beneath him.

”The board will need to discuss this,” he said. ”New information. New... considerations.”

”You have until the end of the week,” Finn said. His voice was steady. He’d practiced. ”After that, we’re leaving.”

”The king’s decree—”

”Change it.”

Theron stared at him. Then at Lucian. Then back at Finn.

”You’re both impossible,” he said.

”We’ve been told,” Lucian replied.

The councilmembers gathered their papers, their composure, their dignity. They filed out of the common room in silence, not looking at each other, not looking back.

The door closed behind them.

Finn let out a breath he didn’t know he’d been holding.

”That was intense,” he said.

”You handled it well.”

”I almost spoke. When they asked about you.”

”But you didn’t.” Lucian walked to the window, looked out at the street. ”You let me handle it. That’s progress.”

Finn stood up, stretched. His back ached. Posture was exhausting. ”Do you think they’ll agree?”

”They’ll agree.”

”How do you know?”

”Because they’re scared.” Lucian turned from the window. ”Scared people make bad decisions. Bad decisions lead to concessions. We’ll get what we want.”

”And if they don’t?”

”Then we leave. Find another way.”

”Is there another way?”

Lucian was quiet for a moment. Then he said, ”There’s always another way.”

---

Upstairs, in their room, Finn sat on his bed and stared at the ceiling again.

The spider was still there. Its web was bigger now. More threads. More connections. A map of possibility.

”Lucian,” he said.

”Hm.”

”When you raised your hand. When you did all those things. The elements. Space. Time.” Finn paused. ”Was that your full power?”

Lucian sat on the other bed, leaned back against the headboard, closed his eyes.

”No,” he said.

”Then what was it?”

”A demonstration. A fraction. Enough to make them afraid, not enough to make them desperate.”

Finn thought about that. About fractions. About fear. About the difference between showing your hand and playing your cards.

”How much power do you actually have?” he asked.

Lucian opened his eyes. Looked at the ceiling. At the spider. At the web.

”Enough,” he said.

”That’s not an answer.”

”It’s the only one you’re getting.”

Finn didn’t push. He’d learned. Some doors didn’t open. Some questions didn’t have answers. Or had answers that would break you if you heard them.

”Lucian,” he said again.

”Hm.”

”Thank you. For stepping in. For handling it.”

”You were about to say something stupid.”

”I was about to say something true.”

”Same thing.” Lucian closed his eyes. ”Go to sleep. Tomorrow, we train.”

”Train what?”

”Everything.”

Finn lay back, pulled the blanket over his chest, and stared at the spider.

It was still working. Still patient. Still building.

He closed his eyes.

And somewhere in the city, in a manor on a hill, Dorian Ashford received a second letter.

The teacher is dangerous. Do not engage directly. Observe. Report.

Dorian read the words twice. Then he crumpled the paper and threw it into the fireplace.

The flames consumed it.

He watched them burn.

And smiled.
