My Infinite System.

Lucian’s voice was flat. Certain. ”Drop it.”

Alistair hesitated for one more heartbeat. Then he let his hand fall.

The golden light vanished.

The creature surged forward, triumphant—

And stopped.

It stopped because Lucian looked at it.

Just looked.

The air between them didn’t freeze. It didn’t shimmer. It simply ceased to be relevant. The creature’s forward momentum carried it into a space that no longer existed, and it stumbled, confused, its form flickering.

Lucian took a step forward.

The creature took one back.

”What...” it hissed, its many eyes narrowing. ”What are you?”

”I’m the one who’s been asleep,” Lucian said. ”And I’m very, very annoyed that you made my family fight you alone.”

He raised his hand.

Not in a dramatic gesture. Not with a flash of power. He just raised it, palm open, toward the creature.

”You’re a concept,” he said. ”Hunger. Devouring. Consumption. That’s what you are.”

The creature snarled, trying to push forward, but it couldn’t. It was rooted in place.

”So let’s try a concept of my own,” Lucian continued. ”Cease.”

The word hung in the air.

The creature’s form began to unravel. Not dissolve. Unravel. Like a knot being pulled apart from the inside. Its colors bled into nothing. Its many mouths opened in silent screams. Its eyes—all of them—widened with something it had probably never felt before.

Fear.

”You can’t,” it whispered, its voice fracturing. ”You can’t unmake us. We are eternal. We are—”

”You’re hungry,” Lucian interrupted. ”And hunger ends when there’s nothing left to eat.”

He closed his fist.

The creature vanished.

Not fled. Not retreated. It simply stopped existing, like it had never been there at all.

The cavern was silent.

Althea stared at Lucian’s back, her heart pounding so hard she could hear it in her ears. She’d seen him erase an assassin. She’d seen him stop beings with a thought. But this... this was different. This was him reaching into the fabric of reality and pulling out a thread until the whole tapestry came apart.

Lucian stood there for a moment, his shoulders rising and falling with a normal breath. Then he turned around.

”See?” he said, a faint, tired smile on his face. ”Stretching helps.”

Lucy stared at him. Then she laughed, a sound that was half sob, half genuine amusement. ”You absolute idiot.” She pushed off from Marc’s support and stumbled toward Lucian, throwing her arms around him.

He caught her, holding her tight. ”Missed you too.”

Marc walked over, slower, his gaze on Lucian with a mix of relief and something harder. ”You could have done that hours ago.”

”Could have,” Lucian agreed, still holding Lucy. ”But I just woke up. Give me a break.”

Silas joined them, clapping Lucian on the shoulder. ”Show off.”

Lucian snorted. ”Always.”

Alistair remained where he was, on one knee, watching his children reunite. His face was unreadable, but his eyes... his eyes held something that looked painfully like hope.

Althea hung back, unsure of her place in this family moment. These were legends. Sleeping Progenitors. Her mother’s brothers. Her uncle. Her grandfather.

Lucy pulled back from Lucian, wiping her eyes with the back of her hand. Then her gaze found Althea again.

She walked toward her, slow, almost hesitant.

Althea couldn’t move. Couldn’t breathe.

Lucy stopped a foot away. She was shorter than Althea had imagined, more fragile-looking up close. But those eyes... those eyes were exactly like her own.

”Look at you,” Lucy whispered, her voice breaking. ”Look how big you got.”

Althea’s throat closed. She tried to speak, but nothing came out.

Lucy reached out, her hand trembling, and touched Althea’s face. Just a light brush of fingers against her cheek.

”I’m sorry,” Lucy said. ”I’m so sorry I left you. I’m sorry I wasn’t there. I’m sorry for everything.”

A tear escaped Althea’s eye, sliding down her cheek to meet her mother’s fingers.

”I don’t...” Althea started, then stopped. Swallowed. Tried again. ”I don’t understand. Any of this.”

Lucy smiled, and it was the most beautiful, heartbreaking thing Althea had ever seen. ”Neither do I, baby. But we’re going to figure it out. Together.”

Behind them, the cavern rumbled.

Everyone tensed.

Alistair stood, his face grim. ”That was one,” he said. ”There are more.”

Lucian’s expression hardened. ”How many?”

”Enough.” Alistair looked at the walls, at the pulsing veins of light. ”The breach isn’t sealed. It’s held. But they’re still out there. Waiting.”

Lucy’s hand dropped from Althea’s face. She turned to face her father, her exhaustion momentarily forgotten. ”Then we finish it. Together.”

Marc nodded. Silas cracked his neck.

Lucian looked at Althea. ”You should—”

”Don’t,” Althea cut him off, her voice stronger now. ”Don’t tell me to stay behind. I came this far. I’m not stopping now.”

Lucian held her gaze for a long moment. Then he nodded, a small, approving tilt of his head. ”Okay.”

Alistair looked at them all—his children, his granddaughter—and something shifted in his ancient eyes. Regret. Pride. Determination.

”The seal’s heart is at the center of the breach,” he said. ”We need to reach it. All of us. Together.”

Another rumble, closer this time. The walls flickered.

Lucy took Althea’s hand. Her grip was warm, surprisingly strong.

”Stay close,” she said quietly.

Althea squeezed back. ”I will.”

They moved as a group toward the far end of the cavern, where the light pulsed brightest. The whispers grew louder as they walked, promises and threats pressing against their minds.

Lucian walked at the front, his presence a shield against the worst of it. Alistair moved beside him, their shoulders almost touching.

Marc flanked them, his vigilance unceasing. Silas brought up the rear, watching their backs.

And Lucy held Althea’s hand, leading her into the heart of the storm.

The breach loomed ahead—a tear in reality itself, a wound in the world that bled colors that didn’t exist. Beyond it, shapes moved. Hungry shapes.

Lucian stopped at the edge. He looked back at his family.

”Ready?” he asked.

Lucy nodded. Marc grunted. Silas gave a thumbs up.

Alistair met his son’s eyes. ”For the record,” he said quietly. ”I’m proud of you. All of you.”

Lucian’s expression flickered, just for a moment. Then he turned back to the breach.

”Then let’s go show these gods what happens when they mess with our family.”

He stepped forward.

And the universe screamed.
