My Infinite System.

The silence that followed Lucian’s words was heavier than the strange atmosphere of the Veil. Lucy stood frozen, her outstretched hand trembling slightly. The glowing sigils on her skin seemed to pulse in time with her racing heart.

Alistair didn’t look at Lucian. His eyes were only for Lucy, soft with a feigned pain that was masterfully crafted.

”Tools?” he said, his voice a low, wounded murmur. ”Is that what you think, Lucy? After all I’ve shown you?” He took a slow step toward her, his presence both comforting and overwhelming. ”Look at them. Look at your brothers. Do they look like tools to you? They look like targets.”

His voice gained a sharper edge, laced with a fear that felt terrifyingly genuine. ”The universe does not tolerate our kind, Lucy. The Diva, the Ashura, the countless other races... they hunted us to near extinction. They murdered your mother. They would have murdered you in your crib. They will not stop until every last one of us is ash.”

He gestured toward Lucian and Marc. ”They are here now because they love you. And that is their greatest weakness. That love will get them killed. The hunters are already coming. They have always been coming.”

Lucy’s eyes flickered to Lucian, seeing the weary determination on his face, and to Marc, whose cynical mask couldn’t hide the tension in his stance. Alistair’s words wormed their way into her fear, the newfound, terrifying power inside her twisting into a knot of protective instinct.

”He’s using your fear, Lucy!” Lucian yelled, his voice cracking with frustration. ”He’s always used it! He’s not preparing us for a war, he’s starting one! He wants to burn everything down because he’s angry!”

”I am trying to save what is left of our family!” Alistair’s voice rose, finally showing a flash of his own anger, a glimpse of the fury banked beneath the calm facade. ”I am giving us the power to ensure no one can ever take from us again! Is that so wrong? To want to protect my children?”

”Protect us?” Lucian took a furious step forward, his own control snapping. ”You were supposed to protect us! That was your job! You were our father! But you weren’t there! You let Mom die! You let Marc be taken! You let me think I was alone my whole life! You’re not a protector, you’re a failure! A failure as a father and a failure as a man!”

The words hung in the air, brutal and final. For a split second, Alistair’s mask of paternal concern shattered completely, revealing a cold, ancient emptiness in his eyes. It was there and gone in a flash, but Lucy saw it. She saw the truth Lucian was screaming.

And in that same split second, as Lucian’s accusation echoed across the plain, the space directly behind Alistair ripped.

There was no sound, no warning flash of light. One moment there was empty air, the next there was a figure. It was tall, unnaturally thin, and seemed to be woven from shifting shadows and static. It held a blade that wasn’t metal, but a shard of solidified nothingness. It moved with an economy of motion that was beyond speed, the dagger aimed perfectly for the base of Alistair’s skull.

Lucy didn’t think. She didn’t plan.

The core concept that had defined her since childhood—protect your family—erupted from her.

The air around Alistair didn’t harden; it became absolute. A perfect, invisible sphere of negation snapped into existence around him. The Hunter’s blade, which could pierce dimensions, struck the barrier and simply stopped. Not with a clang, but with a silent, final cessation of momentum, as if the very idea of movement had been revoked.

The Hunter, thrown off by the impossible defense, was flung back, its form flickering.

Alistair, unharmed, didn’t even flinch. He didn’t turn to look at his would-be assassin. His eyes, now burning with a cold, furious light, were locked on his sons. He saw Lucy’s protective field. He saw her power, perfectly aligned with her will. And he saw Lucian and Marc, still rooted in their anger, their own potential dormant.

A look of utter disgust crossed his face.

”You see?” he spat, his voice losing all pretense of warmth. ”She understands. She embraces her nature. But you two... you cling to your petty hurts. You can’t awaken on your own. You need a push.”

He raised a hand, his fingers contorting into an ancient, terrible shape. A word tore from his throat, a syllable that wasn’t a sound but a fundamental command, a key turning in a lock buried deep in their blood.

”Karys!”

The effect was instantaneous and violent.

Lucian cried out, dropping to one knee as if he’d been shot. His weapon clattered to the glassy ground, reverting to its handle form. Fire erupted under his skin, not his familiar power, but something older, wilder, tearing him apart from the inside. The world dissolved into a kaleidoscope of screaming colors and fragmented laws of physics.

Marc let out a choked gasp, collapsing completely. His body arched off the ground, green energy crackling around him not as a controlled force, but as a chaotic storm. Visions of Eron’s lab, of cold metal and searing pain, merged with sensations of infinite space and crushing gravity. It was not an awakening; it was an invasion.

Alistair didn’t wait. In the chaos, he grabbed Lucy’s arm. Her concentration broke, the protective sphere vanishing.

”No! Lucian!” she screamed, reaching for her brother.

But Alistair was already tearing a wound in reality itself, a jagged portal of howling void. He pulled her through. She cast one last, horrified look back at her brothers, writhing on the ground in agony, before the portal snapped shut, leaving only an echoing silence.

The Hunter, now back on its feet, recovered its balance. Its featureless head turned from the spot where its target had vanished to the two new, violently awakening power sources on the ground. A secondary objective. It raised its blade of nothingness, preparing to eliminate the emerging threats before they could fully form.

It lunged.

A shadow fell over Lucian and Marc.

It wasn’t the shadow of the Hunter. It was vast, and warm, and alive.

A roar split the air, a sound so primal and powerful it vibrated through the very atoms of the dead world. It was the sound of a mountain giving voice.

Kaelis form had expanded, muscles swelling, skin hardening into shimmering, obsidian scales. His back split as massive, leathery wings erupted, casting a great canopy over his friends. His face elongated into a draconic maw, smoke curling from his nostrils, his eyes burning with molten gold.

He had grown to numerous times his size, a living fortress of scale and muscle.

The Hunter’ blade slammed into Kael’s newly formed chest plate. Instead of piercing through, it screeched, sparking against the impossibly dense scales and stopping dead.

Kaelis didn’t roar again. He simply looked down at the slender, shadowy creature, his eyes filled with a protective fury that mirrored Lucy’s. He brought one massive, clawed hand around and swatted the Hunter away like a bothersome insect. The entity flew back, crashing into a spire of black glass fifty meters away, its form flickering erratically.

Kaelis then turned, placing his colossal body squarely between the incapacitated brothers and any other threat. He lowered his head, a low, continuous growl rumbling in his chest—a promise of utter destruction for anyone who came near.

On the ground, Lucian and Marc were lost to the world, trapped in the crucible of their forced awakening, their bodies convulsing as the legacy of the Aethel was brutally carved into their souls. The only thing standing between them and oblivion was a dragon who had finally decided it was time to stop holding back.
