My Infinite System.

Dorian Ashford’s room was on the fourth floor of Ashford Manor, overlooking the family’s private garden. Ivy crawled up the stone walls. Roses bloomed in neat rows. A fountain shaped like a snarling wolf spat water into a marble basin.

He sat at his desk, staring at the letter in his hands.

The ink was still wet. He’d written it twice, crumpled both versions, and was now on his third attempt. His father expected results. His mother expected discretion. His older brothers expected him to fail.

He couldn’t afford to fail.

Father, he wrote, then stopped.

Too formal. Too distant. His father hated formality from family. It reminded him of the court, of the politicians who smiled while they plotted, of the enemies who bowed while they sharpened their knives.

The Ceremony was eventful, he tried.

Better. His father liked understatement. It showed control.

A commoner from the outer districts manifested seven affinities. Fire, water, earth, air, space, time, and spirit. The crystal sang.

Dorian set down the pen.

The crystal sang.

He’d never heard of such a thing. No one had. The old masters who taught at the Academy, the ones with grey beards and dusty robes, they’d stood in stunned silence. One of them had wept. Actually wept.

Dorian hadn’t wept. He’d watched. He’d calculated. He’d realized, in that moment, that everything he’d planned for the next five years had just become irrelevant.

A street rat with seven affinities.

Seven.

Dorian had two. Fire and air. He’d been praised for it. Called a prodigy. His father had hosted a banquet. His mother had bragged to her friends. His brothers had stopped calling him ”the spare” and started calling him by his name.

Now there was a boy with seven.

Seven.

Dorian picked up the pen.

He was accompanied by a man. No family crest. No introduction. The boy called him ”teacher.” I don’t know his name. I don’t know his origin. But he carries himself like someone who’s never had to introduce himself.

He paused. Added:

I’ll learn more.

He signed the letter, folded it, and sealed it with wax. The Ashford crest—a wolf’s head, jaws open—pressed into the soft red surface.

He rang a bell.

A servant appeared. Young, quiet, with the kind of face that didn’t remember what it saw.

”Send this to my father. Immediately.”

The servant bowed and left.

Dorian turned to the window. The garden was dark now. The fountain still spat water. The roses still bloomed. Everything looked the same.

Nothing was the same.

Across the city, in a modest inn that had suddenly become the most watched building in the capital, Finn sat on his bed and stared at the ceiling.

”You broke the Academy,” he said.

”I didn’t break anything,” Lucian replied. He was sitting by the window again, watching the street below. ”You did.”

”The crystal sang.”

”The crystal sang.”

”Is that normal?”

”No.”

”Then I broke it.”

Lucian turned from the window. ”The crystal is fine. It reacted to the presence of spirit affinity. Spirit affinity hasn’t been seen in this world for over three hundred years.”

Finn sat up. ”Three hundred years?”

”According to the texts. The last recorded spirit mage died in the Second Purge. The Council doesn’t like spirit magic. It’s hard to control. Hard to predict. Hard to suppress.”

”Suppress?”

Lucian’s expression didn’t change, but his eyes got sharper. ”The Council exists to maintain order. Order requires predictability. Spirit mages are unpredictable. So the Council... encouraged them to disappear.”

Finn’s stomach turned cold. ”They killed them?”

”They made it difficult for them to exist. Social pressure. Legal restrictions. Accidents.” Lucian shrugged. ”The usual methods.”

”And now I’m a spirit mage.”

”Now you’re a spirit mage.”

Finn lay back on the bed. The ceiling was cracked. A small spider was building a web in the corner. He watched it work, methodical and patient, and wondered if he’d just painted a target on his own back.

”Is that why you taught me etiquette?” he asked. ”To make me look like less of a threat?”

”To make you look like someone worth keeping alive.” Lucian stood up. ”The Council won’t kill you. Not publicly. Not after the Ceremony. Too many witnesses. But they’ll watch you. Test you. Try to figure out what you are and how to use you.”

”What about you? They’ll watch you too.”

Lucian almost smiled. ”Let them watch.”

---

The first visitor came before noon.

A woman in silver robes, her hair pinned up in an elaborate twist, her smile as sharp as a blade. She introduced herself as Magister Elara Voss, representing the Academy’s Admissions Board.

”Seven affinities,” she said, sitting across from Finn in the inn’s common room. Lucian stood by the fireplace, pretending to read a newspaper. ”In all my years, I’ve never seen anything like it.”

Finn kept his posture straight. Shoulders back. Chin level. Hands relaxed on his knees. ”Thank you, Magister.”

”No need for formalities. Call me Elara.” Her smile widened. ”I’m here to discuss your future, Finn. The Academy would be honored to have you. Full scholarship. Private quarters. Access to the restricted archives.”

”The restricted archives?”

”Fourth-year level. Normally reserved for students who’ve proven themselves.” She leaned forward. ”For you, we’re willing to make exceptions.”

Finn glanced at Lucian. Lucian didn’t look up from his newspaper.

”That’s generous,” Finn said. ”But I have conditions.”

Elara’s smile flickered. ”Conditions?”

”My teacher. Lucian. He comes with me. He teaches me. Not the Academy’s instructors. Him.”

The smile vanished. ”That’s... unusual.”

”I’m unusual.”

Elara studied him for a long moment. Her eyes were cold, calculating. She was trying to figure him out, find the angle, understand the game.

”The Academy has protocols,” she said. ”Standards. We can’t simply—”

”Then I’ll find another school.”

”There is no other school. The Academy is the only institution in the kingdom authorized to train mages.”

”Then I’ll train myself.”

Elara’s jaw tightened. ”You’re being unreasonable.”

”I’m being careful.” Finn stood up. ”Thank you for the offer, Magister. If the Academy changes its mind, you know where to find me.”

He walked to the stairs. Didn’t look back. Didn’t flinch.

Behind him, Elara Voss sat in silence, her perfect smile gone, her hands clenched in her lap.

Lucian folded his newspaper and followed Finn upstairs.

---

The second visitor came at sunset.

A man this time. Older. Grey hair, grey beard, grey robes. He moved like someone who’d forgotten how to be in a hurry. His name was Archmage Theron Vance, and he was the head of the Academy’s governing board.

”I don’t have much time,” he said, settling into the same chair Elara had used. ”So I’ll be direct.”

Finn sat across from him. Lucian stood by the window.

”Your conditions,” Theron said. ”Your teacher. What are his qualifications?”

”He’s qualified.”

”That’s not an answer.”

”It’s the only one you’re getting.”

Theron’s eyes shifted to Lucian. Measured him. Weighed him. Found nothing visible and clearly didn’t like that.

”The Academy has rules,” Theron said. ”Policies. We don’t allow outside instructors. It undermines our authority.”

”Then your authority is fragile.”

Theron’s jaw tightened. ”You’re young. You don’t understand how these things work.”

”I understand that the last spirit mage died three hundred years ago. I understand that the Council made it happen. I understand that you’re not here because you want to help me. You’re here because you want to control me.”

The room went very quiet.

Theron stared at Finn. Finn stared back.

”My teacher comes with me,” Finn said. ”Or I don’t come at all.”

Theron was silent for a long moment. Then he stood up.

”I’ll discuss it with the board.”

”The board has until the end of the week. After that, I’m leaving the capital.”

”You can’t leave. The king has issued a decree. All awakened mages must attend the Academy. It’s the law.”

Finn stood up. ”Then change the law.”

He walked to the stairs. Didn’t look back.

Theron watched him go, his expression unreadable.

Lucian watched too. And for the first time all day, he almost smiled.

---

That night, after the visitors had come and gone, after the innkeeper had brought them dinner and retreated to her own rooms, Finn sat on his bed and stared at his hands.

”Seven affinities,” he said.

”Seven,” Lucian agreed.

”I can’t control any of them.”

”You can control three. Fire, water, earth. The others will come with time.”

”How much time?”

Lucian was quiet for a moment. ”I don’t know. This world hasn’t seen a mage like you in centuries. There’s no precedent. No guidebook. We’re making this up as we go.”

Finn looked at his hands. They looked the same as before. Calloused. Scarred. But there was something new now. A warmth. A hum. A sense of potential waiting to be unlocked.

”What if I can’t do it?” he asked. ”What if I’m not strong enough?”

Lucian sat on the edge of the other bed. ”Strength isn’t about power. It’s about endurance. About getting back up when you fall. About continuing when everyone else has stopped.”

”Is that how you got strong?”

”I’m not strong.” Lucian’s voice was quiet. ”I’m stubborn.”

Finn thought about that. About the alley where they’d met. About the training, the supplements, the endless repetitions. About the way Lucian had never given up on him, even when he’d collapsed, even when he’d cried, even when he’d wanted to quit.

”You’re not stubborn,” Finn said. ”You’re patient.”

Lucian almost smiled. ”Same thing.”

”No. Patience is waiting for something you know will come. Stubborn is refusing to accept that it won’t.” Finn lay back on the bed. ”You’re patient.”

Lucian didn’t answer.

They sat in silence, listening to the sounds of the capital. Carriages. Conversations. A woman singing somewhere in the distance.

”Lucian,” Finn said.

”Hm?”

”Thank you for not giving up on me.”

Lucian was quiet for a long moment. Then he said, ”You’re welcome.”

Outside, the stars came out. One by one. Bright and cold and impossibly far away.

And somewhere in the city, in a manor on a hill, in a room with a view of the garden, Dorian Ashford read his father’s reply.

Watch him. Learn from him. And when the time comes, make sure he knows who his betters are.

Dorian folded the letter and placed it in his drawer.

He had work to do.
