I Became a Witch in a World Full of Urban Legends

The wind herded the clouds like a shepherd, the dark clouds like a flock of wild sheep galloping across the sky, gathering, pressing tightly together.

A thin mist drifted, the fine rain pattered down, the massive outlines of the city ruins stood between heaven and earth like a mirage.

The rain soaked the rooftop. A young man lay quietly on the cold, damp floor, and beside him was a young girl.

……

Lu Yibei held a broken umbrella she’d found from who knows where, squatting on the ground, staring unblinkingly at the unconscious Qing Ji.

From a distance, she looked like a little girl on a rainy day, fascinated by a snail on her way to school.

Her mood was heavy; she felt her Ancestor was in big trouble!

Haggard face, deep sleep, weak heartbeat–when she arrived, Qing Ji was already like this.

Although, for someone who might not even count as alive, having a heartbeat was a bit absurd, but judging from these symptoms, Ancestor really seemed like the legendary soul leaving the body.

Scientific name: persistent vegetative state.“No matter how I call, I can’t wake him up. What am I supposed to do?”

In the past hour or so, Lu Yibei had already tried all sorts of ways to wake Qing Ji.

Including, but not limited to, softly calling by his ear, patting his cheeks with her little hands, stimulating acupoints with psychic energy spikes, swinging his body like a pendulum, and even the flesh-and-blood wind-fire wheel.

But, it was completely useless!

“If it really doesn’t work, I’ll just have to…” Lu Yibei looked down at her small hand, her gaze turning cold.

Although, up to now, her score against Qing Ji was 17:7659.

Of those dozen or so wins, about ten were mutual destruction under the explosion of the Hundred-Armed Giant’s power.

But she also knew clearly that in this place, even if the body was destroyed and turned to dust, it could revive quickly.

If it really doesn’t work, I’ll just have to send Ancestor off!

Try again, maybe it’ll work?

Just like when an electronic device crashes, you only need to shut it down and restart, and there’s over a 70% chance it’ll return to normal operation.

Lu Yibei thought to herself, a wicked idea rising with her courage. As a surge of psychic energy fluctuation stirred within her, a chaotic, dazzling, and violently charged silver light cluster appeared in her palm.

Sorry, Ancestor, I swear this isn’t deliberate revenge, I’m just being obedient and filial.

On a rainy day like this, letting you lie on the wet ground isn’t a solution either, right?

——–

On the other side.

On an ancient street, in front of Yanzhi Restaurant, beside a dining table.

The few side dishes on the table were almost gone, the empty wine jars had been moved from the table to the ground, and counting them carefully, there were actually eleven in total.

The air was filled with the rich aroma of yellow wine.

Huá Sāng and Qing Ji each sat on one side of the table, half-leaning on the edge, drunkenly shaking their heads, occasionally raising their cups, mumbling indistinctly.

Although eating and drinking here couldn’t fill their stomachs in the real world, the wine here was still intoxicating while inside.

“Hic, little friend, let me tell you! Miss Yanzhi is really beautiful. The first time I saw her was right…” Qing Ji swayed as he looked around, pointing at the water channel behind him, “right next to this water channel.”

“It was midsummer, the afternoon sun was scorching, cicadas were noisy, she wore a blue kerchief, a peach-pink gauze skirt, a pair of white Embroidered Shoes by her side, her little feet, so white and tender, swaying in the water, swaying and swaying, swaying right into my heart… And guess what happened next?”

Qing Ji recalled as he spoke, his eyes shining, treasures buried in that light.

“Um, I don’t know…” Huá Sāng shook her head dreamily, “But, but I know, you must have fallen for her, right?”

“Hehehe… hic!” Qing Ji laughed out loud, the smile full of memories and a hint of mischief. “At that time, I dashed forward, grabbed her Embroidered Shoes, and ran!”

“Um…” Huá Sāng pouted, frowning, “I get it, that’s called, called being tempted by beauty, right?”

“What do you mean tempted by beauty? That’s called love at first sight!” Qing Ji corrected loudly.

“But, hic…” Huá Sāng’s pink lips pressed against the rim of her cup, pondering for two seconds, muttering, “Strictly speaking, all love at first sight is just being tempted by beauty.”

Hearing this, Qing Ji was silent for a long while, unable to think of a retort, so he changed the subject, “Guess what she did after I took her shoes?”

“Anxious? Angry? Um, I don’t know…” Huá Sāng shook her head.

“She actually pulled a kitchen knife from her bosom and tried to chop me!” Qing Ji gestured exaggeratedly, “The kind used for butchering pigs, you know?”

“She chased me with the knife for five streets, and finally threw it at me, almost slicing half my head off!”

At this, Huá Sāng couldn’t help but interrupt, “This… this can’t be right! How could Miss Yanzhi catch up to you?”

In her view, Qing Ji was a senior from the Great Pure Palace. With just a bit of movement technique, an ordinary person relying on foot strength alone shouldn’t be able to catch up.

“That’s why you’re still, what was it you said before… oh, right, too young!” Qing Ji lifted his chin slightly, his flushed face showing a bit of pride.

“If I let her catch up, wouldn’t fate be broken?”

Hearing this, Huá Sāng silently poured Qing Ji another cup, filled her own, and toasted him.

Isn’t that what makes him a senior? Even when he’s being a scoundrel, he does it with such clarity and elegance. If it were nowadays, he’d end up in the station eight times a day.

Qing Ji raised his cup and downed it in one gulp, then continued, “Besides, Miss Yanzhi isn’t bad herself. Dozens of jin of meat, plus over a hundred jin of vegetables and fruit–she just carried it all away with ease by herself.”

“That one, she… hic! She threw a cleaver over and split the two-inch-thick shop door right open.”

Huá Sāng silently gave a thumbs up, praising, “That’s what you call natural-born strength.”

“Isn’t it! I only found out later that this Lu Family girl is famous for her fierceness. Even two or three sturdy men can’t handle her, and no one within ten li dares mess with her.”

“So, did you ever give her shoe back?” Huá Sāng tilted her head and asked.

At these words, the light in Qing Ji’s eyes dimmed instantly. Without a word, he grabbed a jar of wine, knocked off the seal, and gulped down half the jar in one go.

Setting the jar down, he just stared quietly at the edge of the canal, lost in thought, his gaze dazed, cheeks flushed, body swaying slightly–he looked truly drunk.

Who knows if it was the wine that got him drunk, or the girl who once sat there.

After a long while, Qing Ji withdrew his gaze and sighed silently, “Did I return it? Maybe… a lot happened after that, I can’t remember. I just remember I opened this shop for her, and then…”

“And then, I lost her…”

“How did you lose her?”

Qing Ji fell silent, his brows lowered. From his expression, he probably couldn’t remember.

Huá Sāng looked at Qing Ji in a daze, blinked, and comforted, “Senior, don’t be too sad if you can’t remember. Weren’t these things forgotten before too?”

“Now that you’ve remembered these, you’ll probably recall the rest bit by bit.”

Hearing this, Qing Ji was stunned for a moment, then burst out laughing, “Haha, you’re right, I’m just being sentimental. Sorry, sorry.”

“Don’t just talk about me, tell me about yourself! I only knew you were badly injured at a young age, but you never said how you got hurt.”

In the past, their friendship was as light as water between gentlemen; if the other didn’t want to speak, they’d never ask.

But today, Qing Ji had already shared his embarrassing stories. If he didn’t get Huá Sāng to say something, he’d feel he’d lost out!

“This, well…” Huá Sāng rubbed her aching brow and smiled wryly, “So, is today a confession session?”

“Hmm? Confession session?” Qing Ji nodded slightly, “That’s a good phrase. Yes, today is a confession session, haha!”

Huá Sāng pondered for a few seconds, pursed her lips, sat up unsteadily, looked straight into Qing Ji’s eyes, and asked seriously, “Senior, have you ever killed anyone?”

“Killed? I vaguely remember… I’ve killed many,” Qing Ji replied.

“Innocent people? The kind who, if nothing happened, could have lived a peaceful and happy life,” Huá Sāng asked solemnly.

As she spoke, she seemed to recall something. Under the messy hair that covered her face, her clear eyes reddened slightly.

Hearing this, Qing Ji suddenly sobered up a lot. He frowned at Huá Sāng, saying nothing.

Huá Sāng grabbed the half-finished wine jar from Qing Ji, imitated his earlier move, took a deep drink, then hugged the empty jar, lowered her head to look at her toes, and murmured, “Senior, I have. Many…”

——–

The rain kept falling, as if it would never stop.

On the dilapidated, crumbling rooftop.

Lu Yibei pressed her left hand tightly against her mangled right shoulder, looking at the Ancestors writhing on the ground, muttering to himself, and felt utterly helpless.

A few minutes ago.

When she was controlling the power of the Hundred-Armed Giant, about to help her Ancestors complete molecular reassembly, the Ancestors suddenly spoke.

He said, “Confession… that’s right, today is a confession session!”

In front of Qing Ji, Lu Yibei already felt guilty all the time for pretending to be his wife. Suddenly hearing Qing Ji say that, her heart tightened and she instinctively clenched her fist.

Then…

The light orb condensed by the power of the Hundred-Armed Giant in her palm exploded.

With a “bang!”, her entire right arm and shoulder burst into a cloud of blood mist–there wasn’t a single piece of flesh or bone left intact.

For a moment, Lu Yibei seriously suspected that Qing Ji wasn’t having any problems at all, but was instead trying out some new form of torment on her.

If she attacked him rashly, he’d immediately go berserk and pull a “killing in a dream” like Chancellor Cao.

But now…

Hearing Qing Ji’s cheeks flushed, mumbling in a girl’s voice, she felt that her Ancestors’ problem might be even worse than she thought.

“I’ve killed, many, many innocent people…”

Lu Yibei, “…”

What the hell is this?!

Ancestors, what are you doing, Ancestors, why are you speaking in a girl’s voice?

Could it be… you also have a witch type haunting core entity?

Complaining inwardly, Lu Yibei glanced sideways at Qing Ji, quietly putting some distance between them.
