Sini immediately laughed.

Xun Hui opened her mouth, wanting to say something, but found herself at a loss for words.

“Sleep, I’ll call you when it’s time to eat,” Yang Ruxin said, glancing at Xun Hui with a softened tone.

Xun Hui really did close her eyes, but quickly opened them again, looking at Yang Ruxin with a bit of unease.

“I was just saying that, as long as you don’t hold me back, I won’t go anywhere,” Yang Ruxin blew a stray lock of hair from her forehead.

Xun Hui smiled and then truly fell asleep.

“Big sister, you’re really not leaving?” Erni couldn’t help but ask quietly.

“No, I still have to raise you all up and find you husbands,” Yang Ruxin smiled.

“Shameless,” Sanni couldn’t help but mutter.

“What’s this, little miss, picking a fight on purpose?” Yang Ruxin couldn’t help but glare, “A man should marry and a woman should wed; do you want to be an old maid?

That’ll save me the dowry…”

“You…” Sanni, feeling a bit ashamed by Yang Ruxin’s remark, stamped her foot.

“Alright, stop stamping.

If you keep it up, you’ll bring the house down…”

“I’m not talking to you anymore,” Sanni turned to leave, but just after turning around, she turned back again, “What about the eggs?”

“Weren’t you not talking to me?” Yang Ruxin looked at the little girl amused, but hurriedly continued before the other got too annoyed, “Alright, alright, no more teasing.

Of course, I’ll cook them thoroughly to satisfy your cravings.”

“How will you cook them?” Erni frowned, as she hadn’t tasted eggs in several years.

“Obviously, by lighting a fire and boiling them,” Yang Ruxin slightly arched her eyebrows, “but during the day there are too many people around, and it would be bad if granny found out, so wait until tonight and I’ll cook them for you all to eat.”

“Then I’ll keep them safe for now,” Sanni said as she stuffed the two eggs back into the earthenware jar to hide them.

Yang Ruxin pursed her lips at the stingy behavior of the little girl but didn’t object.

In a farming family, it was common to eat only two meals a day to save on food, with no dinner.

Of course, wealthier families were another story, but during the busy farming season, all households would have three meals a day.

Because there wasn’t much work left in the fields, and as the days were long and nights short in summer, Yang Peili and Yang Baixiang returned home while it was still very bright outside.

Yang Anshi was visibly very happy, having called Feng Caie early in the morning to start cooking, and even took out two salted fish to steam.

Yang Ruxin knew this was because the other members of the Yang Family would be coming home in the evening, so they were adding extra dishes.

Soon, the courtyard was filled with voices.

Yang Baichuan and Yang Baifu, along with their wives and children, had all returned.

One called for father, another called for mother, some for grandfather, others for grandmother—it was quite lively.

Yang Ruxin leaned against the doorframe of her own side room, looking at the bustling figures in the courtyard and at the harmonious atmosphere, with a touch of irony at the corner of her mouth.

“Dani, what are you standing there for?” A plump man saw Yang Dani and called out, waving his hand, “There’s some pastries uncle brought back in the house.

Come and have some.”

“That’s great, thank you, uncle,” said Yang Ruxin, exactly what she wanted to hear as she smiled and dashed into the main room.

On the table in the main room, there was a jar of white liquor, a chunk of fatty pork belly that looked like it weighed about two pounds, and several packets of pastries.

“What are you doing?” Seeing Yang Ruxin grab a packet of pastries, a girl in a light blue dress suddenly exclaimed.
