Reborn with a Space: Building a Fortune Amidst Famine

Chapter 892: Chapter 892: Garrison

Zhang Chunsheng smiled and said, ”Su Yuanyuan, let’s go eat together. Today they’re serving stewed meat in the cafeteria, and this big pot of stewed meat is really delicious.”

”Sure, let’s go together.”

The two walked along the road, with many people watching them.

Sometimes people can be really cruel, silently hurting others, just like in the garrison.

Many people would compare Zhang Chunsheng to Tan Shaoting, thinking that the former leader was always better than the current one.

Zhang Chunsheng would inevitably get hurt by these comparisons, but there was nothing he could do about it.

However, Zhang Chunsheng’s mindset was pretty good. He couldn’t possibly not notice, but he just didn’t take it to heart.

Before they even reached the cafeteria, the rich aroma of meat wafted out.

”It really does smell good,” Su Yuanyuan said with a smile.

”Right? The benefits this year are quite good. Plus, each family received an extra five pounds of meat.”

”That’s really not bad. You figured it all out yourself?”

”Yeah, Daqing arranged it so everyone doesn’t have to worry about buying it.”

The two entered the cafeteria, and many people wanted to let them go first, but they refused. So, they queued up at the back.

Because they were there, the cafeteria was much quieter. There really wasn’t any way around it.

”Su Yuanyuan, aren’t you participating in the annual talent show?”

Su Yuanyuan nodded, ”I just want some quiet days now; I’m going back on the fifth. So there’s just one more week, and I want to spend it by myself.”

Zhang Chunsheng didn’t say anything more. He could understand Su Yuanyuan. He also sometimes wanted some alone time to unwind.

”Actually, everyone wants to see you, but they also understand your feelings.”

This is one of the few places she still wants to come to. If she didn’t have peaceful days here, she probably wouldn’t want to come back, right?

Soon it was their turn. Each received a portion of braised pork, and Su Yuanyuan also got a serving of cabbage with bean curd sheets, which included some small chilies. The taste should be quite good.

”Mr. Su, I saved some pig trotters for you,” the head chef said with a beaming smile.

”That’s wonderful. I’ve been wanting to eat pig trotters. I greatly appreciate your kindness.”

She indeed wanted to eat them, but at the cafeteria, she felt embarrassed to eat too well because the higher-ups ate ordinary dishes. If she ate too well, she felt embarrassed under the watchful eyes of many people.

It’s not about fearing their gaze or comments; it’s mainly about disliking the feeling of being the center of attention.

The head chef directly handed Su Yuanyuan two front trotters, which had more meat and tendons and fewer bones, making them delicious to eat.

The two found a table to eat their meal. Many people took their food home because their families, including children, were waiting to eat.

It’s more convenient to eat at home since leftovers can be saved for the evening. Like today’s stewed meat, it’s impossible to take as much as you want. Families with more people just take it home, add sauerkraut and potatoes, and stew it for a meal that’s enough for the whole family.

”Do you want a pig trotter?”

Zhang Chunsheng shook his head, ”No, I won’t eat it. The head chef specially saved it for you. You haven’t been back for years. You deserve to enjoy it.”

”You act as if you can’t get any.”

Zhang Chunsheng just laughed, ”By the way, how are Mr. Zeng and the others doing?”

”They’re doing alright. I haven’t seen them for over a month.”

”I missed Mr. Zeng’s wedding last time, which was quite embarrassing.”

”Their son is already several months old.”

Zhang Chunsheng laughed, ”Time flies so fast.”

”When are you planning to settle down? Last time, when I had dinner with the leaders, they mentioned introducing someone to you. Have you settled on a date?”

Zhang Chunsheng shook his head, ”No, we didn’t work out. You know about my job, and they also have a job. It’s unrealistic to make them accommodate me. It would be a waste for them, so I decided to let it go.”

”Wasn’t she from the cultural troupe? Couldn’t she just come to the garrison?”

”There’s no future growth opportunity in the garrison’s cultural troupe.”

Su Yuanyuan understood. She’s an ambitious woman.

”The leaders thought you two were a match.”

”I really don’t have any plans now.”

”When are you planning to have them? When you’re fifty or sixty? By then, it won’t be about finding a wife but an old companion.”

Zhang Chunsheng laughed, ”You’re right. But whether it’s a wife or an old companion, I really have no plans.”

”Well, if you don’t act now, you’ll soon be scolded by the leaders. They’ll ensure you have some plans. Better to find someone you like by yourself.”

”Where would I find someone I like? I don’t interact with any women.”

”Earlier in the cafeteria, I saw many young women glancing at you. Isn’t that a good sign?”

Zhang Chunsheng showed a pleading expression, ”Spare me. I still want to live a quiet life.”

Su Yuanyuan decided not to persuade him any further. Today’s conversation led to this point, so she mentioned a few things. But since their relationship wasn’t that close, saying too much wouldn’t be appropriate.

”What about Daqing and the others? I think that even if you don’t have any plans, you should think about your subordinates. You should apply for a social gathering with the higher-ups.”

”I asked them, and they also have no plans.

Daqing will be in charge here in the future. As for the others, once they retire, they’ll be assigned elsewhere. At most, some will become instructors.”

”How many more years until they can retire?”

”Three years. In three years, they’ll be eligible for retirement. Now, when they go on missions, they bring apprentices. It’s a good way to train them, so when they leave, they’ll be at ease.”

”You should really organize those social gatherings.”

”Haha, I’ll tell them it was your idea and submit a report to the higher-ups.”

Su Yuanyuan rolled her eyes. She’s not their mother hen; it’s just because she knows them that she’s speaking up.

Su Yuanyuan left a few pieces of meat for herself and gave the rest to Zhang Chunsheng. She had also eaten one pig trotter, which was a rare indulgence. After all, there was still half a steamed bun and a serving of cabbage with bean curd sheets.

Zhang Chunsheng had eaten two servings of meat, ”You ate so little; it’s not worth it.”

”I’ve eaten quite a lot today. Alright, I’m heading back.”

She strolled back, which helped with digestion. Honestly, it had been a long time since she had such leisurely days. She enjoyed this free feeling.

When she got home, she took out some sweet potatoes and potatoes, placing them next to the metal stove. Then she entered the space.

There were still many books and paintings that she hadn’t organized. She tidied them up so she knew what was there. In the future, she could find what she needed directly.

She saw the item that was said to be a treasure basin. She examined it from all angles and decided to give it a try.

She put a handful of rice in a bowl, wondering if it might increase in the future. If it truly did, maybe it really was a treasure basin. She could test it in the coming days, as it was a good way to pass the time, wasn’t it?

After placing the rice, she went on to do other things, not paying further attention to it. Her full focus was on the books and paintings.
