Reborn with a Space: Building a Fortune Amidst Famine

Chapter 240: 240 departure, year ’62

The three girls chatted until past ten, and only then did Su Yuanyuan go to rest.

Every day she went out wandering, always looking for opportunities to sell the things from her space.

This day, she was walking down the road. ”Comrade, comrade.”

Su Yuanyuan turned around and saw Jiang Hongqi.

”Comrade, what’s the matter?”

”Comrade, I have a friend who wants to make a transaction with you.”

Su Yuanyuan looked steadily at Jiang Hongqi without saying a word.

”It’s because my friend kept asking, so I agreed to help find you and ask.”

”What does he want?”

”I don’t know either. Would you like to talk to him directly? The goldfish in my hand was exchanged with him.”

Su Yuanyuan thought for a moment and nodded, ”Alright, I’ll wait here.”

Behind Su Yuanyuan was the post office, and she was planning to write a letter here. This was a good time to listen to what the person wanted.

After she finished writing to Hu Chunhua and just came out, Jiang Hongqi arrived with a middle-aged man.

The three of them stood close to the door.

”Comrade, what do you want? I’ll help ask.”

”I want pork, the more, the better. I can handle a thousand pounds.

I also want grain. It must be fine grain, preferably rice.”

”Rice? The price is the same as pork now.” Su Yuanyuan still had quite a bit in her space, but selling it would make it less.

”As long as you have it. I want five hundred pounds of rice, five hundred pounds of pork, and five hundred pounds of flour.”

Su Yuanyuan thought for a moment, ”I have all of that, the price is the same for rice and pork. Flour is one yuan per pound, finer than special flour.”

The middle-aged man nodded; he was buying it for someone else, and the person specifically wanted these things.

”Okay, are we still trading with goldfish?”

”Yes, I want twenty-four pounds.”

”Alright, when will it be ready?”

”Tonight, at the same place as last time. Same time.”

Su Yuanyuan felt uneasy. Looking at what was needed, it didn’t seem like it was for sale. Could it be for his own use?

After returning from the post office, she went to the inn to make a fire, as there were no other guests and she didn’t want to trouble the girls. She thought that once this transaction was done, she would stop for a while.

”Xiao Su, Xiao Su, the train is running again.”

”Xiao Yun, how do you know?”

”I just went to the train station.”

The girls all smiled knowingly; the girl’s partner worked on the railway.

”Thank you, I’ll go buy a ticket right away.”

This time Su Yuanyuan wanted to go to the border. She had money from James, which she planned to donate directly.

So she bought a ticket for a midnight train at the station, which made her feel even more at ease.

Returning to the inn, the girls chatted with Su Yuanyuan, ”Are you leaving now? We’ll miss you, Xiao Su. Will you stop by here again when you return?”

”I don’t know. Probably not; the New Year is coming, and I’ll have to head back once I reach my destination.”

After the night’s transaction, Su Yuanyuan returned to the inn and continued chatting with the girls.

”You wouldn’t believe it, my family said there’s been a tragedy in a village where a woman killed her husband and in-laws and ran away.”

”Things like that happen? Which village?”

Su Yuanyuan listened on the side and thought the woman must have been pushed to the limit, otherwise, how would she bear to do that? It’s not like killing a chicken.

”I heard she was a child bride and went to that family at the age of three. The mother-in-law was particularly fierce. They only had one child, so they used the girl as a servant.”

”But killing someone? That’s too much, isn’t it?”

”No idea. But some say the man was up to no good, gambling and drinking all day, and would beat people when he lost.”

”That’s truly unfortunate. If a woman marries such a man, she’s doomed for life.”

”Because of that, she killed someone? Has she been caught yet? Honestly, I hope she doesn’t get caught; just hearing it makes me feel so sorry for her.”

All the girls nodded, and Su Yuanyuan just listened. Truth be told, no one really knew what happened, so saying anything was pointless. Although she felt terribly sorry, it wasn’t an excuse for murder either.

”I heard the mother-in-law always hit and scolded her, saying the daughter-in-law was indecent.”

No one spoke this time. Su Yuanyuan quickly changed the topic.

It wasn’t until nine o’clock that she went to rest. She was planning to leave at eleven-thirty, and had already checked out, so she would leave alone.

The train station was quite crowded today. After boarding, Su Yuanyuan immediately found her seat and lay down.

There are still about twenty days before reaching the border, so there’s no need to rush.

On New Year’s Eve, there was pork stew with cellophane noodles in the dining car. Although not much pork was seen, the noodles were greasy and had a meaty flavor.

By the time Su Yuanyuan went to get some, it was already gone.

This didn’t disappoint her; back in the compartment, she secretly took out a sausage.

The aroma was rich, and in the small space, the smell was overwhelming, causing other passengers to frequently glance at Su Yuanyuan. But out of politeness, they didn’t ask.

It was the twelfth day of the new year when Su Yuanyuan finally arrived at the border. Having stayed here before, it felt like a familiar place.

She went directly to the place Zhang Chun previously wanted them to enter.

But this time, she couldn’t get in at all. She didn’t know whether Zhang Chunsheng was there, and she didn’t dare ask directly for him.

”Comrade, I’m here to make a donation. Who should I look for?”

”A donation?”

Su Yuanyuan nodded, ”Yes, a donation.”

”Wait here, I’ll go ask.” The regular soldiers didn’t know either.

Zhang Chunsheng, stationed there, was puzzled when he heard there was a girl from out of town who came to make a donation.

When he came out and saw Su Yuanyuan, he smiled.

”Su Yuanyuan?”

”Mr. Zhang? I thought you weren’t here. Otherwise, I would have directly asked for you?”

”Follow me.”

The two of them were silent as they made their way. It wasn’t until they reached Zhang Chunsheng’s office that Su Yuanyuan relaxed.

Being watched by so many people was really uncomfortable.

”Xiao Su, how come you are here?”

”It was a bountiful year, and I made a lot of money. Of course, part of it was from Tan Shaoting, so I thought about making a donation. But back home, I had no idea how to do it.

I thought I’d take this opportunity to wander around, so I came straight here.”

”You spent the New Year on the train?”

Su Yuanyuan nodded, ”Yes, and there was pork on the train. Though I didn’t see much meat, there was a meaty flavor.

Mr. Zhang, who do I speak to about the donation? I want to hand over the money so I can feel at ease. Otherwise, I’m afraid of losing it.”
