Reborn with a Space: Building a Fortune Amidst Famine

Chapter 32: 32 fishing

Su Yuanyuan stayed at home all day and didn’t go out. On her birthday, she felt she should celebrate a little.

She didn’t believe in that thing about women’s numerology affecting three families, but since nobody around her was educated, and had such beliefs, she couldn’t change their minds, so she also avoided going out on this day.

She prepared herself a sumptuous lunch with fish, meat, drinks, and rice. Although there was no birthday cake, she could use any other cake as a substitute; the thought was what counted.

Honestly, being alone was really quite lonely, but given her situation, she couldn’t have friends. Others avoided her as much as possible.

Two days later, Su Yuanyuan used the evening to go to the reservoir. She was bored anyway, having taken a nap during the day, and was full of energy. She also didn’t want to run into people during the day, and this was more convenient for her plans.

In the space, there was a professional angler’s ice chisel, which made it easier and faster to cut through the ice.

But there were no fishing tools in the space. Su Yuanyuan thought she could just use a basket to scoop them up, or maybe she could use the space to gather them.

While working, she let her imagination run wild. After all, whatever happens, it’s fun, right?

Since she planned to use the space, the ice hole needed to be big. After more than an hour, she finally made a two-meter diameter ice hole.

It wasn’t easy at all. Fortunately, her body had been recuperating for almost a month and was much better now. Otherwise, she couldn’t have managed it.

She took a drop of water from the space and poured it directly into the water.

Smiling happily, she prepared the basket, imagining it full of fish, and couldn’t help but grin.

And sure enough, she was right. In no time, the two-meter ice hole was crowded with fish.

Now Su Yuanyuan was happy. She squatted down and reached her hand into the water, able to touch the fish directly.

”Collect all the fish.”

And just like that, the fish on this side were gone in an instant.

Su Yuanyuan excitedly went into the space, seeing the fish she just gathered on the ground, her eyes sparkling. There were at least two hundred large fish weighing five or six pounds each. This was all money; although she couldn’t sell the Wild Boar now, the fish were sellable.

Upon leaving the space, more fish gathered at the ice hole, and Su Yuanyuan collected them just the same.

The space really was a good thing. The fish were taken in without even a drop of water; this was perfect.

After waiting a while, another batch came, though there were definitely fewer than the last batch.

This time she still used the space to collect them. Since they came, there’s no letting them go. They all ended up with her.

After this batch was collected, no more fish came. At least, none could be seen on the surface.

Happily, she pushed the cart home. She took out half of the space’s fish and placed them directly on the snow. By tomorrow morning, they’d be frozen.

It was already around ten. Once she warmed up in the space, she snuggled into her quilt to sleep.

The first thing she did the next morning was check on the fish outside, and sure enough, they were frozen in shape, which was pretty good.

She found some mesh bags and the small sled she made last time; it took twenty mesh bags to fit everything.

She fed the sheep hay, patting its head, ”You keep watch over the house, I’m going to make money.”

Su Yuanyuan felt that only making money could make her happy now. Everything else was just fleeting clouds!

It was actually quite tiring to drag the sled through the snow. But it couldn’t be helped.

She specifically chose paths with more snow to save some energy. Three hours later, she reached the county. On the way, she had already taken out five bags from the space.

She went straight to Old Yang’s doorstep, now nearly out of breath.

Seeing the sweaty little girl at the door, Old Yang was quite surprised.

”Girl, what’s up with you?”

”Uncle, I caught a lot of fish last night and came to the county to exchange them for money. I’m here to ask you; these are all big fish.”

Old Yang squatted down and untied a mesh bag. Wow, the fish were indeed huge.

”Girl, come, let’s move them into the courtyard.” Old Yang called out his apprentices to help, not letting the little girl do it. His two apprentices moved everything inside.

Then Old Yang instructed them to call people over, leading Su Yuanyuan inside.

”Girl, hurry and warm up by the fire, so you don’t catch a cold.

You sure are capable; each bag of fish weighs more than you. How did you manage to get so many?”

”Uncle, it’s actually not that hard to drag them over the snow. I’ve done this before and know the best paths.”

Su Yuanyuan didn’t hold back either, sitting right by the stove, taking off her cotton shoes, which were soaked with melted snow, still very wet.

”Girl, let me get you something to eat.”

”Uncle, I can’t eat anything now, too tired. I need to rest for a bit.”

”Why push yourself like this?”

”Uncle, I have bad luck, being born on the eighth of the twelfth month. Everyone shuns me, so I’m embarrassed to always trouble the few people who treat me well.

I’m all alone. Just relying on farming, I figure I can at least scrape by and not starve.

Since my luck is good now, finding such valuable things, I need to turn them into money as quickly as possible. Otherwise, how can I survive?”

”People are too ignorant.”

Su Yuanyuan just smiled. The reason she came to Old Yang’s was because he ran a business. He met all kinds of people, and wasn’t so ignorant.

”You’re quite smart, but with your small stature, you can’t keep this up.”

”Uncle, when people are poor, ambitions wane; when horses are thin, their coats lengthen. For survival, I can and will do anything.”

”This little girl with her tricks.”

The two sat by the stove for about twenty minutes. Now Su Yuanyuan felt the chill leaving her. Old Yang quickly brewed her a bowl of brown sugar water.

With the first sip, she felt warmth from her throat all the way to her stomach.

Su Yuanyuan sighed contently, finishing the bowl of brown sugar water without pause.

”How is it? Feeling better?”

”Thank you, Uncle.”

”No need to be so polite.” At this moment, voices could be heard from the courtyard. Su Yuanyuan didn’t move, and Old Yang went out by himself.

There was hustle and bustle outside, but she paid no attention, just warming herself by the stove. This was an opportunity for Old Yang to make money, ensuring they could work together long-term.

Not sure how things were going outside, her clothes had dried by the time Old Yang came back in.

”Girl, these fish are about the same size and will be sold by the head. One fish is one and a half, with sixty fish in total, making it ninety dollars in total.”

”Thank you, Uncle.” Su Yuanyuan said, counting ten dollars and handing it over to Old Yang, ”I can’t let you do this for free.”

”Take it back. If you do this, don’t come here next time.”

”Uncle, I’d feel guilty if I didn’t.”

”No worries, don’t make such a fuss.”
