Reborn with a Space: Building a Fortune Amidst Famine

Chapter 28: 28 Wild Boars Entered

The days that followed were spent lounging at home all day. Since the walls had been plastered with mud again, the house was quite warm.

With nothing to do, Su Yuanyuan stayed at home sewing shoe soles, which Hu Chunhua had brought over. After giving her some simple instructions, Hu Chunhua let her try it on her own.

In truth, Su Yuanyuan was not patient, but she was so bored that a person will do some baffling things out of boredom.

It wasn’t until the eighth day of the twelfth lunar month, which was this girl’s birthday.

Su Yuanyuan recalled that she, this little girl, had never celebrated a birthday. Even though the family couldn’t afford it before, the day was taboo for her family, so they simply didn’t celebrate.

But Su Yuanyuan thought differently; what does the day of birth have to do with it? A birthday is a birthday. So early in the morning, she boiled eggs and made noodles for herself.

It was simple noodle soup made with walnut oil, sour and spicy, and tasted quite good.

Enjoying a lovely meal, today being her birthday, she wanted to do nothing, so she lay on the kang reading a book, thinking that when she has money next year, she would definitely buy an iron stove and the house would be warm.

She wasn’t worried about carbon monoxide poisoning; this type of house wasn’t airtight, so that situation wouldn’t occur.

She was wrapped warmly, with a hot water bottle tucked in her arms, not cold, but her hands and feet were still icy.

The midday meal was even more extravagant. She ate dumplings with a trio of fillings, consuming a whole large bowl.

Suddenly it seemed that this life was much happier than the previous one; at least now the food tasted delicious.

She went to sleep early in the evening. She was sleeping soundly when she heard a sheep’s heart-wrenching cry.

Su Yuanyuan was startled, what’s so terrifying about that sound?

So she hastily dressed and got up, thinking maybe it was about to give birth?

She didn’t dare use a flashlight, going out in the dark.

As soon as she opened the hall door, she heard noises by the main entrance. What’s going on? Su Yuanyuan tiptoed over, mentally bolstering her courage.

She heard grunting noises, pig sounds. How could there be pigs? Whose pigs had come to her doorstep?

And it didn’t sound like just one. Su Yuanyuan helplessly approached the door, peering outside, locking eyes with something in the dark, giving her a jolt.

The fence gate could hardly stop a wild boar. Realizing this, Su Yuanyuan quickly retreated. In the blackness, she couldn’t see clearly, but she wasn’t so kind-hearted either. Regardless of whose they were, in this situation, she had to protect herself first, right?

Su Yuanyuan guessed correctly; the fence was breached, and three pigs—two big and one small—had come in. With the snow and moonlight, Su Yuanyuan could clearly see they weren’t domesticated pigs, but wild boars from the mountains. Her house was at the mountain’s foot, so they’d come over.

The sheep were still bleating desperately, and Su Yuanyuan turned her head and said, ”Shut up, stop calling.”

The sheep’s cries stopped immediately. Satisfied, Su Yuanyuan thought, she was just worrying about not having any money, and here it was.

Three wild boars—she was no match for them physically, but she had to use the electric prod.

Su Yuanyuan was actually excited at this moment. People risk their lives for wealth, birds for food. She wasn’t about to let this prime opportunity slip past.

However, this time she planned on making it public with the small one. She’d figure out the other two herself.

Su Yuanyuan didn’t know her face now bore an excited smile. The sheep had noticed this; it must have been too frightening for them, so they just watched wordlessly.

The wild boars, of course, noticed Su Yuanyuan too. They started circling her, all three of them.

Su Yuanyuan realized she couldn’t stun all three at once. So she tossed a few cooked corn cobs from the space, the sweet fruit corn with their particularly fragrant aroma.

Being animals, they were immediately drawn to the smell and started munching on the corn.

Now was the time. Su Yuanyuan rushed toward the largest one, setting the electric prod to maximum, zapping it directly on the big wild boar’s head. With a thud, it fell, still twitching.

Su Yuanyuan didn’t have the chance for a second strike as another large wild boar came charging.

She managed to bring it down just the same, and the small one tried to escape. How could she allow that? So Su Yuanyuan threw another corn cob, and as it lowered its head to eat, she took it down as well. From the first one, she made two rounds, and it was unlikely they’d recover within half an hour.

Still holding the electric prod, she fetched a bucket and a chopping knife to start bleeding the largest one.

This time she was more practiced than last, though some blood was spilled; it wasn’t much. While dealing with the first, she gave the second boar another zap with the electric prod.

The first was dead completely, only then did she wave her hand to store it away.

Next was the second, handled the same way. Both were stored away, leaving four buckets of blood on the ground, also stored. The little one’s blood went into the wooden bucket for gifting tomorrow.

Finished bleeding them, she didn’t take it in. Instead, she cleaned up and made some cover-up.

Since it was in the snow, you could tell it wasn’t a single wild boar, but so what? There were no footprints in her yard, so she’d call it just one.

She approached the sheep pen, and saw the sheep took a step back. Su Yuanyuan squinted her eyes, ”What? Scared?”

The sheep bleated softly and took two steps forward.

”That’s better. That’s how it should be.” She patted the sheep’s head, turned, and left the yard.

She still went to Hu Chunhua’s house. How should she put it? You could feel Hu Chunhua didn’t mean any harm, so she was willing to trust her instincts.

Yang Minggang came out to open the door, having just heard that little girl’s voice. Getting up in the middle of the night would annoy anyone.

”Uncle, a wild boar broke into my house. I’ve already killed it.”

”You killed it?” Yang Minggang asked incredulously.

”Yes.”

Then Hu Chunhua came out as well, ”Yuanyuan, what’s this about?”

”Aunt, a wild boar broke into my yard in the middle of the night. I’ve already killed it.”

The couple didn’t know what to say, so they went with Su Yuanyuan to her house.

Seeing the three to four hundred-pound wild boar on the ground, the couple was even more speechless.

”Aunt, what do we do with this wild boar? Do you think the villagers might try to take it?” Su Yuanyuan asked quietly.

”You and your uncle should hurry and take it to the county to sell. Let’s not wake the village head now; what’s the point now?”

That was exactly what Su Yuanyuan intended.

Yang Minggang looked at the big wild boar, ”I should make a snow sled, otherwise we can’t get it over.”

With this weather, this road; even an ox cart wouldn’t make it. A snow sled would be more practical.
